JRPGs |OT| The Grind to Level 99 is Paved With Good Intentions

Man, I loved Joshua and Estelle (only played the first one). Don’t have any experience with Suikoden, I hope that Eiyuden is up my alley! I played the other one that hit Game Pass a while back and the world was interesting enough.

I’m doing the finale chapter of Octopath 2 now, and -now- all the characters are interacting, voice acted cutscenes and all

Unfortunately only doing it -now- makes it feel alien as hell lmao. I’m just laughing at how these characters don’t feel like they know each other but it’s trying to be passed off as if they do.

Effort for trying, I guess?

OH HELL YES, YES I POPPED OFF (Octopath 2 spoilers)

This made the fight HILARIOUSLY easy, but damn it was epic. When Octopath 1 was coming out I was envisioning a fight like this but they didn’t do it there. Happy to see it now. Only one thing left in the game now, the optional superboss, who is the same as the one from the first game

Working on my Jprg gamepass backlog atm, a bunch of stuff to play and no time

Just finished Souls Hackers 2 and well, not a bad game, but also not very fun. I liked the characters and combat was good, however the levels (except the last one) and axis dungeons felt really uninspiring for me. Got on 4th floor for each character and called a day.

Now I started Ni No Kuni and so far really enjoying (really amazing atmosphere), bit overhelmed by the combat, once Im getting used to party gameplay. So what is the best tatics, putting the party on auto or swapping between them? I felt when I try to swap, I always mess up with defense and it gets a little confused.

I thought that was Culex from Super Mario RPG and that’s why you were so hyped lol.

Yeah this was me too. Cool characters, interesting premise, decent battle system all let down by mediocre dungeons. Still enjoyed it but no motivation to do NG+ and max stuff out.

Beat the superboss in Octopath 2. Frankly it’s probably one of the hardest JRPG bosses ever made, I don’t even think you could beat it without looking up a strategy

I still have screenshots from 2018 on my Switch from beating the Octopath 1 version of this boss. 5 years later and I sent him packing once again :sunglasses:. He brought lots of new tricks in OT2…

And on that note, I have also finished the game

So overall, it’s a more memorable game than OT1. The finale chapter and epilogue afterwards are very nice, good they made a proper ending for the game this time lol. The 8 stories themselves… Eh, well, the writing still isn’t so good. I don’t think I got invested into any of them lol. The -overarching- storyline is a bit more interesting and better woven in than OT1’s attempt at it, at least.

Gameplay is improved all around with the limit breaks/latent power abilities and being able to speed up battles. Graphics also feel much more crisp than OT1. Exploring the overworld is a lot of fun now that there’s more interesting things to see and you can sail around on a boat. The optional dungeons are a bit more unique this time too.

Side quests are still mostly about the same. Though this time they added some voice acted side quests involving characters you meet in the 8 stories. They also added some “side stories” in which 2 of the protagonists link up and do their own mini stories.

I’d say this games an 8.5/10, in comparison to OT1 which I think is a 7/10. You probably won’t like it if you didn’t like OT1, but if you did, there’s a much more refined and “complete” feeling game here, this one I feel was more “heartfeltly” developed than OT1.

I did everything in the game and it took 90 hours, so there’s a very beefy content packed game here.

Nick keeps hinting that OT2 -is- coming to Xbox, maybe it will, I won’t be replaying it though.

By the way, I saw some people from both Nintendo -and- Sony Interactive Entertainment thanked in the credits. Not sure what the extent these two had in the games development was though. I played the game on Switch.

Octopath 2 on Xbox is a certainty at this point. Game sold like shit and would be a piss cheap port.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Square Enix’s glut of “AA” games (like OT2, Live a Live, Diofield, Star Ocean 6, Theatrythm etc) are perfect for the Game Pass model.

These games, and more, are thrown out to little advertising and equally little fanfare at full retail pricing during a global financial slowdown. The frequency of releases forces a plurality of consumers to pick and choose some (and in many cases none) and skip the rest.

Hopefully it and others get ported and end up on GP, but even more that SE wake up and see that accepting Sony bribes to stay away from Xbox isn’t working for the majority of smaller releases.

Debating on whether to start Star Ocean 6 or Ni No Kuni 2 next (going to 100% the game before starting the other). I guess SO6 since it’s shorter?

I got every achievement in it. It was pretty good but I enjoyed Danganronpa way more. Also, be prepared:

Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters dated for PS4 and Switch.

New features for these versions include: Switch to old or new soundtrack, NEW FONTS, Turn off random encounters, adjust EXP gain by up to 4x amount.

It is a whopping $75 USD for the whole package. A bit below Sega’s $80 USD for the Etrian Odyssey collection, but these FF games are even older than me lol.

By the way, funny thing, Sega was defending that price point because “there’s lots of content!”

Continuing to play Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth.

There’s not much I can actually say without spoiling but this pacing and these character moments are insane and goosebump inducing. This game is a 10/10 so far and I still have a ton more to get through. Prelude to the Fallen and Mask of Deception did a lot of build-up and this game is the big pay-off… paying off it certainly is.

Some people like bringing visual novel talk into this thread, I kind of am right now. This game has SRPG battles but most of the game is visual novel. I’ve been thinking about throwing a little “(Now Welcoming Visual Novels!)” or something into the thread’s title, as there is no dedicated thread for them and I don’t feel Xbox has enough for their own thread.

That’s the Steam price as well. Bit steep for arguably minimal remasters for games you could have bought for less than €5 throughout the years.

Finally, got a new game that I think I’ll be posting a lot of screenshots of lol.

Yep I finally got Ryza 3. It took this long because I had it set to ship alongside Grimgrimoire here, I didn’t mind because now that it’s been a minute since OT2 I’m fully ready for this now.

And welcome to the family, Ryza 3!

Just saw this and figured I’d post it here because I’m still playing through Mask of Truth and enjoying it extremely

If you’re looking for a very meaty visual novel series to get into (with SRPG battles) then look no further lol. 3 games with one long interconnected story and an awesome cast of characters and peak-of-the-genre story moments.

The story can be the slowest of slow-burns but damn it is good at pulling things off.

The trilogy bundle is probably the best one to get as “Monochrome Mobius” isn’t necessary and is still too recent and expensive (and isn’t part of the trilogy)

Note: Apparently these games have been cheaper than this before, maybe better to wait for the Summer sale but just giving a heads up.

Just finished Ni No Kuni, great game with soberb art style and music. Story was also good, pretty emotional at some parts and characters were also good and likeable. Combat may feel little confuse in the beginning, but it gets better over time. There are some combat balance issues as well, but they didnt put me off the game. Overall, great experience and worth the 50 hs I put in it. 9/10 for me.

Now debating if I should go for all achievements or start Persona 5.

Bought one piece odyssey on sale for 28 bucks. Hopefully ships early next week so i can try it out

Wow so soon! I wasn’t expecting to even see this again till June Direct. I might have to hamfist this into my current gaming schedule somehow…

Meet your new dads…

Completely fell off Blade 3 after about 10 hours. I’m praying there’s a Switch 2 version in the future then I’ll go back
