Jim Ryan Retires, Connie Booth leaving after 34 years, Layoffs at Sony, Multiplayer games Cancelled

Because other layoffs have been confirmed by people positing it themselves. This is just a mid tier leaker jumping onto things

Ah I see. Fair enough. I’ll wait, but if true, that’s wild.

He’s right, PS is playing all its cards wrong.

I saw a post about how these layoffs actually ruined this year of gaming. I have to admit, this really does blow.

Now we can cry?

Retired, probably?

That’s a big shoe to fill.

Interesting discussions on Twitter about the longevity of Sonys PSVR aspirations. Honestly, if I was a CEO, the first thing I would walk in and do is cut PSVR. I’d cut literally everything for it, cancel any 1st party games on it, end any contracts, and stop issuing any new ones for 2nd/3rd party VR.

Easy way to set Sony on the course to save hundreds of millions, if not billions (Im sure its the later i just couldnt find VR spend data) over the next few years.

The massive amount of job cuts in the industry this year is so depressing to see especially with the quality of games that have been produced. I hope this pushes more workers at studios to consider unionization, it’s the only way to get some protection against these sorts of decisions.

As for what’s happening at Sony, I really do think this is all about bottom line. The gaming division continues to grow but slower then their costs have. Not only has the percentage of profit dropped to around 7% last fy(and I’m expecting it to get lower) but the actual figure has been going down. They’ve painted themselves into a corner with high quality single player experiences that get more and more expensive to make but the market for those games isn’t really increasing.

Still puzzled about how only acceptable metric for companies is growth. The moment you earn a bit less than previous quarter or year, cuts needs to be made, and those cuts are usually employees.

Welcome to the intellectual wasteland that is (most) of capitalism. Greed is good

Composers do not retire. Just call John Williams if you want some new film orchestra.

November 9 is Sony’s earnings. It will be interesting to learn the sales and their target goal(s).

Between R&D for PSVR2, marketing, developing games, third party deals etc id find it hard to believe it’s not in the billions, Zuck continues to pump billions into VR and it’s going nowhere

I agree that cutting their losses would probably be the play but it’s a dangerous route to go, screwing over devs you convinced to build for it as well as an audience that spent over $600 for your device a year ago

The thing is there probably is something in VR eventually (once the tech is refined) but it’s a huge gamble for ‘when’. Also because it’s going to be changing drastically the backwards compatibility is always going to be an issue.

It’s a nice gimmick to me but that’s all it is right now IMO. I just don’t see the point investing any money into it as a consumer.

When it eventually hits I’m sure it will be huge for whoever the market leader is but it might be another 20 years from now so investing now could kill their core business in the interim.

Until it’s cheap and is basically a pair of glasses that can be used across a massive library of games, preferably across multiple platforms, I don’t see it ever taking off

It’s cool tech but that’s not enough to break into the mainstream like just picking up controller/kbm that comes with your console or PC is

So 343i Bungie edition? Hard to say. Wasn’t it reported that it’s considered Sony’s layoff cycle?

Publicly traded companies are beholden to share holders. Share holders want stock prices to go up. Sadly infinite growth is a necessity in our insane economics system

Everyone blamed ABK when Bungie partnered with them and saw Destiny 2 was having troubles (funny enough, it was also when Destiny’s content was at its peak) now apparently its SONY’s fault but what if Bungie is the problem?

I mean, lay-offs are bad and SONY obviously has something to do with them but what if Bungie is actually a dumpster-fire of a company?
