Is Microsoft (Xbox) done with acquisitions for 2020?

Ted DiBiase agrees.

It is not the same as it used to be though, MS is letting their studios make the games they want to make and giving them the time & resources to do so, and acting as publisher, so studios don’t have to go dialing for dollars.

All the freedom without any of the constraints, no way that isn’t enticing. This isn’t the same MS

Still hoping for that SEGA acquisition.

They’re going to be acquiring my money come November.

Like insomniac. If the price and the circumstances are right everyone can be acquired.

I doubt it would happen but if there were a Destiny 3 mid next gen that was console exclusive I believe there would be PS5 players willing to jump ship,

Alan Wake is being featured on my dashboard right now with Game Pass. I’m sure it’s just cross marketing for building excitement for the control AWE expansion, but Remedy would be the ultimate get despite their deal with Epic.

Also just finished Blairwitch and the ending was really well done. It felt a lot like PT and shows the talent within Bloober. Wasn’t overly impressed with the game due to the lighting and difficulty figuring out where I could and couldn’t walk but that last hour or so displayed how much potential they have. I think the medium is going to be a hit.

Microsoft could probably buy Bloober, Remedy, Asobo and Bungie and it would be cheaper than WB.

That would be a great EU-expansion too, something they kinda need.

That price isn’t worth it though, buying Bungie would service 100% zero purpose for Xbox.

I guess Minecraft doesn’t either then? Hmm…

Honesly, if there’s no more acquisitions, I wont really mind. 15 studios (several of them with multiple teams) is enough when they get the ball rolling.

Though I would like them to pick up Asobo studio once Flight Sim comes out, that would be a neat pickup.

Bungie would be great, especially if they are working on a new IP. Keep Destiny multii-platform, but all expansions come to Game Pass for free. Win\Win. and Bungie doesn’t have to worry about publishing and doesn’t have to worry about MS pigeonholing them to just doing a particular IP. Lot of positives for both sides.

Different beast all together, game is also on iOS, Android, there’s spin offs, there’s potential use with the Holo-lens, AR/VR, merchandise galore. I was at Walmart and they’re selling those Minecraft Swords for like $12 CAD. Also a movie coming out

I don’t see that potential for Destiny. Microsoft would have to fund Bungie’s games when they can collect revenue for free right now since they own part of the company.

I think the 15 we have now, especially given that they almost all run multiple teams, is fantastic but I still think that with Xbox’s new vision and investment from the top down would make several other studios a great get. MS clearly feels the same based on the SEC filing

I would definitely pick up Asobo, that’s a no-brainer as the relationship seems to be beneficial to both parties already and the talent at that studio is insane. I’d be happy with a sprinkle of my wishful combo of:

  • JP Games
  • Feelplus & Mistwalker (feel like they work best in tandem)
  • Techland
  • Frontier
  • Bloober
  • 11-bit Studios
  • WB Games

I know there are plenty others I’m forgetting that are awesome or could be even more so. I mainly just want to avoid some of the other big publishers who have a history of shutting down studios, or forcing singular projects, from picking up some of these great studios.

Frontier would be great for both PC and console.

I have to believe Phil’s desire to get a Japanese developer comes to fruition in 2020, and possibly a Euro developer (Poland?) as well. A bigger acquisition may take longer pushing it into 2021. 15 studios is a great start, but to build Game Pass into the world beater they envision, they may need 20+.

Rethinking acquiring Bungie, I could see it work but with a few caveats

-The price would have to be right although it would be less expensive for MS as they already own part of Bungie

-They’d have to either work on a new IP aside Destiny or work on Destiny spin off projects that would be exclusive to Xbox/PC

From what I understand though, Bungie has similar issues to 343i with management being all over the place and relying on contractors. Bungie apparently has 900+ employees according to Linkedin and I imagine that would be a massive pain in the ass to get them on board but it would be peanuts compared to getting Warner Bros.

Personally I’m not for it, but I can see it lucrative under the right circumstances.

HOWEVER after that 4A sale it goes to show that MS could probably get 7 or 8 high quality developers for the price that they’d pay for Bungie. That seems like a much better idea than just nabbing Bungie assuming they wanted to be bought (which even then I’m not sure of)

Oh and on a side note, what if Epic bought Bungie just like they did Psyonix and Rocket League lmao

Getting multiple smaller studios they can easily grow sounds a lot more likely than a huge studio like Bungie. And long term these smaller studios could bring a lot more to Xbox.

I don’t think its so much as slip away but they were already getting funding from EA at the time EA purchased them. So EA may have had first rights for purchase before Microsoft or other publisher.
