Horizon Forbidden West Gameplay Reveal

Graphically and Combat wise this game is slam dunk for me.

Will have to wait and see because as usual Sony Games are advertised with 30 fps graphics. If this were 60 fps then it would have been game of the year for me.

Can’t wait for this game to come out on PC in the future. This game requires No compromise hardware in all fronts.

Saw the 4K video - this game indeed looks beautiful! It is the lush colours that make it stand out.

However, I felt it is a slight downgrade from last year’s reveal trailer, imo. Also, the facial animation and hair clipping needs to be ironed out. There were some spots where the frame rate dipped.

Regardless of the visuals, the gameplay itself was fine, nothing too exciting for me personally.

IMO, the gameplay of Dying Light 2 looked fun and more impressive, despite looking ‘fine’ visually.

If this game wasn’t coming to last gen, yes it would be the one that would drive me to look harder for a PS5. Definitely.

As is, I’ll most likely just be playing it on my PS4 Pro. Only way I see that changing is if the whole stock shortage situation is resolved before Forbidden West is released. If the PS5 is readily available by that point, I will be sorely tempted.

Will wait & see how things shake out.

Yeah my feelings too, I just loved everything about the first game, and I wasn’t even going to pick that up until the previews and reviews started coming in, in my games of the gen, without a doubt.

An iteration to that with some new glorious “world” to explore and the story to continue is just what I wanted!

I am now in the situation where I wonder should I just keep my PS5? I don’t doubt they will still be hard to come by for a while, and if this is out this year ooo, it would be a wonderful wintertime game.

I can’t think of another game off the top of my head where I was almost screaming IRL at the “Antagonist” as the first. Fuck you Ted Faro, I mean just fuck you! Get to fuckery Ted!!

.

I hate RDR2 for that as much as the aged mission design. I too don’t want to spend a week picking a gun from the ground to make is somehow look better. Less animation, more action. Plus in that moment I was busy staring at the giant Robot glowing war elephant to notice that there are a handful of frames where it goes from on the ground to her hand. Thats as bad as complaining a character in the far distance when zoomed in looks rougher than the player

Maybe it’s just not my type of game but this looks like a visually better but more boring version of Assassins Creed ? Like visually it’s gorgeous no doubt. But everything else ? Meh. Gameplay loop still looks boring to me, or maybe I just don’t like this type of game.

Visuals are important but I find gameplay much more important. To me this seems lacking in that department. Which has been Guerilla’s biggest weakness since, forever.

all facts. RDR2 despite how gorgeous it is, how “alive” the world is, is ultimately so frustrating to play. Sure, show me the animations of opening every cupboard and then the drawer then picking up the item one by one, but do that once or twice so that I’m cognizant of that effort, but give me have an option where I can just pick shit up in one click or button press (something a game like Cyberpunk did much better), trust me I won’t think less of the game cuz of it nor lose any “immersion”. It’s not just a time annoyance, it’s an ergonomic nightmare sitting there pressing one button repeatedly jesus christ I’m sure I’ve gotten close to having RSI because of this game. You’re a game, act like one pls, the novelty of how much crunch you put your animation and tech team through to make this look hyper real is actually obfuscating and worsening my experience, not enhancing it.

/rant.

30fps again. This shit needs to end.

get used to it. Most console games are gonna be built with 30fps target with a 60fps option, which is a big step forward from not having the latter at all. All these showcases will try to look as best as they can, so it makes sense why they do it with “Quality Mode” even though it irks me to look at, but it is what it is. Don’t be surprised if Hellblade 2 does the same next year.

Insomniac even gave a post launch 60fps RT mode for Spidey, so I’m sure Sony knows the demand for 60fps is there from their first party games moving forward.

I have to say 30fps target makes me think the game is unplayable, was hard to watch

I should have framed that better. The focus shall continue to be having a 30fps “default” mode that looks the best and now there shall also be a performance mode of 60fps as an option with lowered settings and resolution or whatever. In that sense, the quality mode shall be treated as the target. I can’t play 30fps games anymore, so I’m hoping and certain they will provide 60fps option on PS5, cuz PS4 aint gonna be getting modes at all. The optics won’t be great when HZD has 60fps on PC but its sequel doesn’t have a 60fps mode on a new powerful console, that’s just not happening.

but what would the res downgrade be for that 60fps mode, I prefer xbox targeting the 60 fps mode as the main, maybe its because I’ve been gaming on pc most of my life

60fps at 1080p is still gonna be better feeling than 30fps at native 4K so I don’t care about the resolution hit cuz I’m a PC player lol. Maybe console folks want the game to still have a great resolution on their TVs but also want 60fps? Not sure that’s gonna happen or even charitable to ask for tbh. I’m thinking HFW will have these profiles

Base PS4: 1080p 30fps.

PS4 Pro: Dynamic 4K with no RT (1440p average) 30fps

PS5: Dynamic 4k with RT (1800p average) 30fps, Dynamic 4k with no RT (1440p average) 60fps.

1440p 60fps that I can get behind and more games should have that framerate mode. Then again HFW isn’t a first person shooter or immersion breaking, but some day 30fps needs to disappear

Lol

1080

Without ray tracing

With RT: (If ever) 1080

I fixed it

Then again, the PS5 does not support 1440p.

yeah that is why I mentioned it in a dynamic format where the resolution might average around it without being native

I would be taking 10 points off virtually every game going forward if the main mode is 30fps. These gameplay videos mean nothing to me, they don’t look good because I just imagine playing the game and know it’ll feel terrible. This isn’t a just a Sony thing I imagine Hellblade will be the same.

The Plan

  1. Market a game with 30fps target that “looks amazing”.
  2. Tell everyone “there will be a day one patch for 60fps”.
  3. Reviewers give uncritical reviews as the game looks great and though 30fps doesn’t feel great they don’t want to mark it down as they know a day one patch for 60fps is coming.
  4. Update slides with high MC scores for next investor meeting

That they would show the MC score and not the sales on an investors meeting is so weird to me.

That’s too harsh, imo.

Xbox studios generally aim to have great visuals at 60 fps. However, just like anything, there will always be exceptions.

If Hellblade 2 has different modes when it releases, so be it. As long as they optimize properly, you can play the 60 fps mode.
