RT shadows is barely noticeable tbh.
Funnily enough you really get a better example of what the raytraced shadows add from the wider shot - you can see particularly around the building edges thereās much more realistic looking shadowing.
None of you have hardware that can run infinite with full on ray tracing, relax.
That RT mode clip is just asking people to dunk on Halo Infinite lol.
Useless for me but cool for those on PC that want it I guess.
You know, Musk. Maybe you should improve Video Compression.
Nah not really. Most people are talking about the changes and additions coming with the Winter Update and seem pleased as well.
Iām just talking about that specific clip, not the update.
I mean it is not something that fundamentally affects the core game in any meaningful way.
Yes.
I was never particuarly hyped for it but RT is easily one of the biggest disappointment of this new generation
It hogs so much resources for the most minor of changes that im never going to notice in actual gameplay
Adding a few puddles and better shadows at the cost of half the framerate and quarter the resolution, well whoop dee doo
The thing is developers have gotten really really good at making games look good without physically accurate lighting - thereās a lot of smoke and mirrors and fakery going on to achieve all that and it all takes time to implement and is generally pretty inconsistent, but looks good without too much scrutiny. Weāre just not at a point where raytracing is really realistic for the average consumer, so mostly what weāre seeing is developers implementing limited raytracing solutions like reflections or shadows into existing games which already have other solutions planned for reflections and shadows. The end result is yeah, something that slightly improves the games visuals in really specific ways while taking a lot more resources.
It might be a few years away yet (maybe more than a few) but once developers can actually start building games around raytracing itās going to be a huge step up. Not just in visual quality but for the amount of time developers donāt have to spend faking so much of what is on screen. The last part is what is particularly exciting - a lot of the best progress weāve seen in recent game development isnāt even just making games look better, itās making game development more affordable and accessible to smaller and smaller teams and that will be really exciting to see the results of.
I tried it on Deathloop and it looked okay but had to turn it off when it caused my Series X to shut off twice due to āoverheating issuesā. Turned it off and no issues since.
Id argue its further away from that. At least console wise, they wonāt be powerful enough till next gen for it to really be effective without a ton of trade offs and most people still donāt have a PC powerful enough. The fakery and trickery will still have to be done for the majority of the player base. I still think we are a generation away from Ray tracing being used in any real meaningful way in games.
It will be good for devs in the future but when the majority of the playerbase cant use it, the saved time just gives them a worse looking game for most people.
I personally think that the RT shadows look fantastic but yes, existing tech gets you 85% of the way there.
It would have been nice to see for the campaign because making that look even more impressive would be great.
The people that should really be looking forward to it are the machinima people making films and I also imagine it will make Forge maps look incredible when some maps are designed to leverage it.
If weāre being technical minded, the game should have itās TAA solution improved, VRS implementation improved, and working VRR in the winter update.
I would like to focus on stuff thatās noticeable tbh if they can, the pop-in of assets and shadows in campaign is my biggest technical complaint with the game, wish if they could improve that.
If they announce campaign DlC soon it will honestly be great momentum for them. Even if itās mid-late 2023 release.
In any case, Iāll be reinstalling soon. Forge looks wonderful.
Does it have VRS? I donāt remember anyone mentioning it before?
