Nah I think they’re actively trying to get the Xbox One version in an “acceptable” state and they’re giving themselves until the end of Q1 to do so.

It is also possible they are waiting for Series X hardware to be put inside the blades, and then through xCloud on Xbox One, you would still be able to play the game on Xbox One, just through the Cloud.

I don’t think Onefinite’s getting cancelled. It’s doubling as their lower PC spec target, probably.

I do expect some limitations, like potentially the One will be limited to 2 player splitscreen in MP and the Series could be the only one that has 4-split. I think that would be fair (and is sort of Perfect Dark all over again lol)

Also, as an aside, I’m thinking of doing a write up about the 360 Haloes going offline in terms of matchmaking. I also feel like writing something because I -was- involved in Reach’s and 4’s matchmaking updates, so that’s a good chunk of my life disappearing into the ether, so I feel like I gotta say something on it.

Somewhat interestingly, this will mean Reach and 4 will mostly revert to their vanilla states, because the vast majority of their updates are via matchmaking gametype variants. They never actually patched the base included variants, and the file sharing will also be gone, so it’s going to be difficult to get the matchmaking variants onto a 360 after next December.

I doubt the pc minimum spec will be that low.

You’d be surprised. Especially with a F2P MP suite. Especially if the PC version doesn’t have to worry about splitscreen.

Show me a AAA game released in the last 2 years with a minimum spec as low as the jaguar cpus inside the Xbox one.

Every single AAA game that’s on both PC and Xbox One? It’s gonna be a little different because the One won’t have the overhead of Windows and some other things, but they were literally just about to go gold on the Infinite release for the One. They’re not going to throw out all that money and userbase on a game that was already running on the platform and was about to ship.

Like I said, I expect some tradeoff, like the One version only has 2p split vs 4 on Series, draw distance, resolution etc but we’re talking about a game that’s already running 120fps in MP on the Series. Know what’s the easiest way to hit 120fps on a fixed hardware console? Target 60fps on weaker hardware and you practically get it for free on the Series. I’ll also remark that it’s not impossible that the One version would eventually be dropped for updates (or at least Campaign updates) in the future. I’ll also remark that they were already targeting split screen 60fps on the One.

Nah… show me 1 single AAA recent games minimum spec that’s as low as Xbox ones cpu, show me one that’s a graphical showpiece that’s that low.

If ur only reply is the Xbox one version of aaa games than it proves my point. It shows that the game was compromised to land on those last gen machines. That they used them as a base and built the game from there, with those limitations in mind.

Next gen games should be made the opposite way. Build the game with series S/X in minds. Then tell the Xbox one port team to cut down what they can to get it running. If they can’t then drop the console. The last thing they should do is anchor the Xbox one to the series x version. The last thing that should ever be said is not we can’t put that in the game because that can’t run on the one’.

We already know that forge maps(if they are required to be playable on Xbox one) will be compromised. It’s pretty easy to understand why if you have ever built a forge map. My question is what other compromises are they going to make for the Xbox one.

I hope that 343 is weighing the options on a scale now. Getting a few million more players to jump in at launch by being on the old systems vs damaging the mid to long term legs of the game by making a worse version of the game for everyone.

Live Service games and Battle Royale games fit this bill. Even ones released this year.

As mentioned, the Xbox Era podcast spoke about the topic of the One port in great detail. I left a comment that ties into this an Xbox One port is, from a business perspective, a sensical move:

One massive reason why MS would want Halo Infinite to run on the Xbox One, that hasn’t been mentioned in this discussion, is because of PC. The great majority of PCs will not support DX12U because it’s only a handful of expensive and hard to find cards that support it. So taking full advantage of the Series machines also restricts the number of PCs the game can be played on.

Not every PC will have Sampler Feedback, DirectML, Ray-tracing and so on. Not every PC will have an SSD to store the game on. Creating a game that takes full advantage of these features not only discounts an X1 port, more importantly it restricts the number of PC players that will consider a Gamepass subscription to play this game.

The beauty of this is that the game would scale well to computers built even 8-9 years ago. The Jaguar processor along with a 1.31 Teraflop GC-based GPU represents the OG X1 spec (1.4 for the S) is quite old by today’s standards. A standard which a great many PCs can match. No need for an SSD, no need for a ton of RAM either.

The Xbox One alone frankly doesn’t have the sales to warrant a port. 40 million owners, many of which who will likely migrate to the Series consoles by Fall 2021, might go down to 30 million active users. If it were a Series-only title, it could have been the thing to get many to migrate to next-gen. But we need to remember the hundreds of millions that play on PC. The hundreds of millions that could be enticed to buy a Gamepass subscription because their 5 year old PC can play the game just fine at 60fps.

Also, it’s nice of them to not leave out the millions of Gamepass subscribers that won’t be left out just because they don’t yet own a Series console. I’m actually cheesed, as a long time PS+ subscriber, that I can’t get access to the PS Collection because I don’t own a PS5. Despite all of those games being PS4 games…I can’t access them. Despite paying the same amount for PS+ as a PS5 owner.

All that said, I’d personally like for it to be next gen only (meaning leveraging the SSD, DX12U GPU features, taking full advantage of the Zen 2 processor for highly advanced physics and AI, etc) and I’d have 2 key arguments in doing so:

  • As MS Flight Sim demonstrates, people will happily upgrade if you give them a reason to. Infinite running exclusively on DX12U video cards seemingly reduces your player base to the few lucky people who own them at present, but that number will change in Fall 2021 where every single new card will likely be DX12U compliant. By 2022, the percentage of PC gamers with DX12U cards could be sufficiently high. Halo can drive the industry forward like Flight Sim, and you’ll have a sexy console version as a result. Plus, There’s going to be a shift across the board with more than a handful of new PC games that will be next gen exclusive, and this will push people to upgrade sooner than later. Fortnite alone, running on Unreal Engine 5, will get millions to upgrade despite the new engine being backwards compatible.

  • If this is truly a “10 year game” as it’s been alluded to multiple times, it won’t even survive 5 years if it’s based on physics and AI that needs to be able to run on a Jaguar processor. With visuals that comparitively looks sparse and “last generation” compared to 2025 games. A NextGen engine prevents that.

So the practical side of me understands that this game needs to be able to run on 200 million PCs to help boost Gamepass numbers and to benefit from high volumes of microtransactions. The dreamer in me is hopeful that this can still be achieved despite amping system requirements, and that we see a truly NextGen Halo game (Not only in terms of visuals, but in terms of physics and systems, something that Halo has always pushed forward in gaming).

which is why i assume they’ll just eventually drop the Xbox One for MP support once it would become a small part of the userbase. They kind of need everyone possible playing it at launch, though.

This is similar to what happened to Destiny 1, where due to issues getting the raid to run on PS3 and 360, they stopped updating PS3/360 D1 and just supported the PS4/One version after that (I’m also assuming D2 will stop updating for PS4/One at some point, too).

If it’s truly a 10 year game it’ll probably be something like

Launch: Xbone, XS, PC

5 years later: new campaign expansion, XS/2025 Xbox/PC only, MP drops One, campaign probably XS/2025box/PC only too 10th year (oh my god i have to think about 2030?) it’ll be a matter of where the game is at if they just start anew. or keep going.

I think Frank O’Connor also said at one point that Slipspace is a very scalable engine, so again I will say that if 343i is keeping the Xbox One version, it means that it works for them. Maybe down the line, there are going to be complications, which will maybe push them to cancel the One version, or maybe not.

However, like some users said, I too think they will uttimately drop the One version some times after launch like they did for Destiny.

Just because it’s a 10 year platform doesn’t mean they’re supporting OG XB1 for 10 years.

Or they could wait until Series X is inside the server blades, and then you could still play Halo Infinite on Xbox One, just with xCloud instead.

They can do a Destiny with the 360 and nobody will bat an eye.

I mean they targeted Xbox One for the whole production of this game. I can’t imagine dropping the last gen versions in the final year of development changing much. We will get what they set out to do and I’m sure it will be awesome. But they 100% should make sure that it works great on Xbox One S|X, reconstructed 1080p60 on S should be the target.
