I get that, however, in the gameplay reveal trailer, they cut the video in such a way as to limit peoples understanding of the static nature of the portals. Sony then quite happily let everyone talk about how the portalling needed the power of the PS5, only to reveal later on that hey are static, and thus likely implementable without the power of the PS5 (as long as you have enough RAM of course).

R&C is simply not possible on last generation machines, especially not without handicapping the game. You have seen nothing close to as nice as this game yet. This isn’t a demo or video - it’s a game, and a great game at that

Definitely not possible.

And it’s just not about SSD. VRAM and CPU will also limit that games potential.

The performance in portal scene has slight hiccups on PS5 it’s self. It will perform terrible on PS4 with longer then expected loading time inside viod

How far in are you? I played an hour this morning and it’s shit. Wondering when it gets better if it’s worth pursuing.

It actually was started on a ps4 devkit. A lot of the transitions and camera cuts would have to be masked more and the jumps from one level to the next would take longer of course. But impossible is a strong word.

But yeah it’s an extremely beautiful game and technically very impressive, no doubt about that.

You do know that rift jumping where the ram is refilled with a new environment is like less then 1% of the game, if the portal sections where like 20seconds, all the other gameplay would be the same experience on PS4 but with lower quality visuals.

Not a comment on the quality of the game btw which I’m sure is excellent. But this is the kind of fake technology marketing that’s going to age like Blast Processing™.

I think the only true next gen game is Flight Simulator. There is just not enough CPU power in previous gen to handle the simulation. It’s really sad to see all this talk about SSD as being some sort of miracle. Consoles are computing devices. SSD are a peripheral.

Not really sure why people are clinging to this. They already said some portals use preloaded assets while many others don’t. The fade transitions also have preloaded assets but it’s the speed in which those assets can be preloaded that allows for these types of effects to be done at this fidelity and density. There are also gameplay design aspects, such as the boss battle that jumps between dimensions, that would not be possible on last gen hardware.

Almost any game can be scaled back to fit on last gen hardware. What matters is would this scaled back version be the same game in the end. R&C would be a different game on the PS4, it’s really that simple. None of that means these systems and techniques can’t be pushed further though.
