Gears Discussion Thread: What should the future of the series be?

I’d say it was more overexposure than Dev time. Which will no longer be a problem.

But also, Gears is fine. There’s nothing wrong with being at a B level when your A level is so stacked.

Dev time can mean more time to innovate and overhaul your franchise, instead of sticking to your formula because you don’t have enough time to innovate. It means a more polished and marketable product, more time to study the market and audience even. Those things absolutely do affect a game’s popularity.

People are having a real “Jim Ryan killing Days Gone” energy right now… :joy:

If that 6 years dev time means complete reboot of Gears franchise in each and every way then sure . Otherwise nope .

Only by accident. The Last of Us 2 was supposed to have a multiplayer, they were hyping it up big time, Sony just rushed it out.

Gears could be a focused product if they cancelled (delayed) all the multiplayer elements too, then tried to release it a year or two later as “Battle for Sera - An unrelated spin-off that easily worth $60, dude trust me”…imagine if Microsoft did that with all their games, they could double their games lineup in an instant.Forza Horizon 5…narrative focused edition $60…Forza Horizon 5 - Radical Online Multiplayer Edition (And they could set the next game in ROME)…also $60

Me personally I like my $60/free with gamepass games actually being finished.

Sadly it doesn’t look like Naughty Dog is getting the kind of funding needed to make a true finished, AAA game, so I would guess Gears will be responsible for the death of Uncharted and The Last of Us IPS.

Just like Halo killed Killzone and Resistance. Its like poetry, it rhymes.

That wasn’t an excuse to the last couple of games or its mindshare though. It just explained to you that more dev time can absolutely be critical to the game in its future iterations.

So, some series can continue to be mediocre and wasting potential because others are doing great?

Ok…

That’s quite a strawman you’ve made there.

I just didn’t find your take that great.

Every IP should strive for greatness and potential realization.

Right now Gears is stuck in the past, not growing in any direction besides graphics.

Which has always been something the series is known for so what exactly are we doing here?

They introduced open sections in Gears 5, but they were near empty.

You don’t think if MS said “you know what, take another couple of years and implement that idea fully” the game would not have been better as a result?

I don’t really get why you’re acting like it’s some kind of outrageous thing to suggest that more Dev time leads to a more polished end product.

You really think TLOU2 would be the same game with half the resource? Seriously?

Gears its on its 9th game by now. It is what it is as a franchise barring a seismic shift.

Adding more weapons.

No, you completely changed what I said to fit your narrative. It’s embarrassing that you resort to that.

We are talking about mindshare, not quality.

Gears 4 & 5 were outstanding games. And I have no doubt Gears 6 will be too. The consensus around the players was quite positive, it’s only a small minority of crybabies who can’t shut up about it who disagree. (Which would be fine if they did so in a reasonable manner, by the way… but that’s not the case here, because everything has to be for them or it should be killed).

My point was, it’s ok to have a few long-running franchises playing to your hardcore, as long as you also have a few blockbusters bringing in the new.

Only for them to be useless online cause it all ends up with the Gnasher

Oh boy… Here we go.

I see… Only though saying that some games should continue to be at a “B” level isn’t the same as saying that it should be for the hardcore fanbase.

But let me respond to this then, if the game should be ad aeternum made the same way for the same tiny hardcore fanbase (don’t kid yourselves), then make it a side project and let The Coalition stretch their legs in creativity and talent with another series.

Saying a studio should keep making the same game over and over is just insanity.

Hey man, its not Naughty Dogs fault TLOU2 failed to attract and keep new gamers, it shipped unfinished with no multiplayer and thus no replay value. The onus is on the publisher for rushing it out instead of giving the devs the time they needed. I don’t blame Naughty Dog for being underfunded, its primarily a Sony issue.

Sadly the series is known to cut corners and not growing the fanbase. Cutting out content like split-screen is one thing, cutting out multiplayer is quite another.

I’m not at all surprised they’ve been relegated to remasters. It’s cheaper than new triple A games.

Later, dude.

Because more dev time doesnt ensure that anything in the franchise changes reception wise. Gears games are good yes but they have minor attachment and zero mindshare for what jt should be.

Just because the next entry would be more polished than 5 (I hope so) with more dev time it doesnt mean the series will suddenly cause this massive excitement that its lacked since the 360 era. Have you seen anybody be excited for the next Gears aside from enthusiasts like us? Have you seen Gears stay in the limelight aside from DF propping up the technical proficiency of Coalition? No.
