Games Analysis |OT| Time To Argue About Pixels And Frames!

In Discord from a developer.

Ugh, PSSR has given me headaches. The PSSR version our SDK provided by Sony and the one that was on the consumer PS5 Pro consoles was not the same. Led to some… surprises with how our games looked compared to what we saw at our studio

PSSR is not part of the game distributable but is a system call? that sounds unnecessary. what if a PS system update with a newer version breaks the optics of older games?

Their lack of hardware abstraction and hypervisor will bite them again. As they say when things go bad, “Because Sony…”

  • 2 modes on Xbox Series X (Quality and performance)
  • More stable 60 FPS on Xbox Series X than PS5 on performance mode
  • Only one mode on Series S (30 FPS)
  • Same visual artifacts on reflections than on PS5
  • Good port overall

Yeah in the stress test area of the forest filled with fog at the start of the game SX runs much better than both PS5 AND PS5 Pro (lol). Doubt on the pixel counting numbers though since I couldn’t spot the SX version being blurrier in any of the IQ comparisons, IF it does indeed run at slightly lower resolutions there is no noticeable difference between the two…the video didn’t zoom in any of those IQ/resolution comparison bits though which is weird.

Series S is decent as well with ambient occlusion and texture resolution taking a hit, seems like a better port than Silent Hill f on the Series S and a good way to experience the game on the little guy. Cronos which also runs at UE5 was also pretty good on the Series S and SX had some frame-rate advantages over PS5/Pro as well, Bloober is doing a good job on their Series versions so far.

New Silent Hill f comparison video from Brazil Pixel!

The results are quite interesting to say the least. The 220w on PS5 versus 130w on SX in quality mode is…really something, I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a big gulf in watt usage in any other game in this channel. The SX looks like it’s very underutilized in this game. O_o

But don’t worry, Sony will make a portable PS5…
Just have to cut 200 Watts and add a Screen
And get it to last longer than their controller
And price it in the $200s

The discussion around Gaming Media is so delusional.

Saw the SH2R Series video from DF and dear god…when did Tom grew such a hate boner for Xbox? did I miss something? he spends half the video talking about how “disappointing” the Series S version is (which is more than decent considering how demanding the game is) and he’s nitpicking and carefully showing the SX version the closest he can get to the PS5 versions (he claims that the difference is only 3-4 frames when it’s not) - such a weird video and that title… lol

I guess we’ll have to wait for Brazil Pixel to have a decent analysis. :man_shrugging:

Is Tom new? I don’t recall that name.

No he is not new, iirc he is there from the 360 days.

They built their audience in the ps4 dominance days and shifted to play up to them in various ways

Something that seeing the power usage between PS5 and Xbox Series X has left me wondering, is this just a power efficiency thing between the 2 consoles? Or is the Series X being underutilized?

The PSU in the Xbox Series X is of a higher efficiency than the one in the PS5. Less wasted energy.

Ok, because watching the Silent Hill F video from Brazil Pixel the difference in the opening comparison is nearly 100W for such a short section.

That feels like an outlier to the norm, then.

Yeah, Brazil Pixel speculated that maybe they were only using 1080p for the native resolution on Xbox for performance and Quality while they used 1080p to 1440p on PS5 for Quality.

Tom has always been like this. Moreso than any other of the DF staff. Excitedly gives PlayStation as many flowers as possible. Then becomes bored or annoyed when he has to talk about Xbox. Just a noticeably different tone, and you can be sure when there’s some perceived advantage for PS, he’s going to go out of his way to highlight that.

Yeah I remember them in the PS4 Pro-One X comparisons when they suddenly changed their tune from “higher resolution is what matters, 900p lol” to “basically a few more frames here and there matter more than resolution” - the Bloostained analysis comes to mind where the One X version was running at native 4K and the Pro at 1080p yet Linneman ended up recommending the Pro version because the One X version dropped some frames in one area.

That being said even back then their bias/preference wasn’t as much in your face as it is now, this generation is like they don’t give a F about that…they show their bias alright. I guess having a platform preference and doing fair and unbiased technical analysis videos is too much for them.

Yeah his latest videos (SH2R, Cronos and Control) reek of bias and weirdly enough the SX versions of all three have some kind of advantages over their PS5 equivalents (even the PS5 Pro in some cases).
