Do Digital Foundry do HDR analysis? because the only mention of HDR was to say it’s not as bright as it was in Eternal but that it looks good. Or could it be broken on consoles but not PC?
I always find that GamingTech (linked above) often has awful takes too, I don’t value his opinion at all.
I think there are a couple of things that we do need to look for help when it comes to HDR, calibration of the overall look of our tv specifically and even then we need to make sure that what we get at the end is something we like.
The games overall look, I stopped trying with other people’s settings because the settings I like could be considered garish(lol), because I really making things look darker but for the colors to pop.
DF are clueless about HDR. I’m not surprised that they can’t see how bad it is in The Dark Ages right now with standard settings. And no, it’s the same problem on PC and it’s not just that it’s darker than Eternal, it’s that the image is washed out because of black level and that you can’t do much about it besides the Color Blindness trick (it’s still not perfect).
DF should have mentioned this problem as they are THE tech guys on graphical fidelity in gaming. They should have noticed this stuff as it’s obvious there’s something not quite right.
Sorry for my bad mood but I still hold them accountable for that Forza Motorsport comparison video where it was also obviously washed out because they didn’t touch anything in the settings.
I think they don’t ever adjust settings, for the Indiana Jones video Oliver mention that they used the default settings which apparently on PS5 either the contrast or the brightness is one click down than on Xbox.
Yeah but that’s not it. That’s their job and that happens time and time again. They should have the tools, if not, their own eyes to tell us how it is and what is wrong. I’m watching their video analysis right now and it looks so bad (even on SDR on my screen)…
That the issue with DF and the people who like DF there love to think they’re professional when they’re anything but.
A professional outfit would ensure all their key staff would have the exact same set-up for their comparisons, be that game systems or audio and visual setups, DF do neither
So you have staff members who don’t have TVs that support VRR or staff members who don’t have Atmos setups. Which, finally enough is 2 areas Xbox supports at a system level.
Wow, I wasn’t even aware of that… It makes so much sense now.
And DF said it themselves. There is just too many games to cover which take an insane amount of time with their small team, so they prefer doing lives which are just them commenting on games.
And yeah, they got it too cozy and cool these past years and they’re videos are now so blatantly unprofessional because of that.
What is crazy to me is that I found out recently that Xbox Series X just runs at higher resolution than PS5 for most games (the video I saw was showing AC Shadows) while needing less power draw.
I guess no one cares but for all these years PS5 was running hotter while needing more energy to get to a worse overall dynamic resolution count in most games, but that was never mentioned by anyone. If they had upgraded their tools and showed dynamic power draw and resolution count that would have helped a lot with the nonsense.
My issue is that there is nothing professional about them at all, and in a lot of cases they’re using their home TVs for doing visual comparisons which is a utter joke A proper professional outfit would ensure their staff are kitted out with the same high spec TV/Monitor and Amp for comparisons, that way all members get to see and hear the same quality of visuals and audio.
DF is now owned by IGN and looks to YouTube for so much of their revenue, so that’s fair comparisons out the window as they need likes and subs. So that means plenty of Xbox bashing love-ins for Nintendo and how SONY have the best studios and do the best directs
How I miss the days of Rich and Maximum
IGN do not own them, just the shares that The Gamer Network had when Ziff Davis bought them, which isn’t a controlling share.
Let’s face it, IGN will now call the shots for Outside Xbox and DF
Not that I held DF in high regard before the IGN buyout
The 5pro is bandwidth capped. Runs the same as XSX. Don’t know who said 5Pro was always 1800 and XSX always 1440p, but its time to stop manual pixel counting.
Oliver from DF didn’t give numbers in like for like scenes but he stated that PS5pro generally ran the scenes at a higher fidelity. Then again DFs video dropped days before the game released and got it’s day-1 patch, so maybe the patch upped had a lot of improvements on Xbox.
The days of manual inspection of games at selective spots is done. Its a good thing too seeing how off the mark the manual inspection actually is.
My prior post about Doom The DarkAges is done by Brazil Pixel using automated GPU workflow process using signal analysis of the various captured videos. It automated several concepts posted about a couple years ago by a friend IRoboto on Beyond3D forums.
Thank you ! That’s the guy I’m talking about.
And yeah Xbox is performing better than PS5 across the board. Interesting stuff.
DF knows who they are catering for so performance advantage is barely mentioned… the gap is significant.
Ign don’t own DF.
I thought Reedpop was the major shareholder in DF and IGN bought all of Reedpop outright ? Sorry if I’m wrong.
It doesn’t matter who owns DF anyway their standard have been poor since John and Alex have calling the shots and acting like children.
Not that I look to youtube for fair console gaming comparison’s LOL
On top of everything else, this directly puts DF in definitively questionable light, especially given how much they’ve been hawking MFG, despite how much gamers hate it and how much it’s a crutch to hide terrible performance of the new Nvidia cards. Been saying it for years, and shit like this just continues to prove that this isn’t an analysis channel but an advertising one.
I saw the video earlier today, but this did not cross my mind. Now it’s very much a possibility to me.
