My only other option would be a Chromecast then because I can’t afford a apple TV. I can’t use my TV apps since I keep mine offline. Do Chromecast or something like Roku offer the full stuff like 4K/HDR and all that? It’s all I need.
Google Chromecast with Google TV (CCwGTV) does 4K HDR. It’s what I use. Don’t confuse it for the just released lower tier model that doesn’t do UHD 4K and focuses on 1080p. The remote is minimal without separate FF/RWD/PAUSE buttons – you use the navigation circle for it.
The only complaint I’ve had was once I had the built-in device storage fill up, but a factory reset took care of that. You can also add a USB hub and external storage etc.
I picked mine up when they had a bundle with $75 of Netflix Credits, thus making the device a mere $12 (or something like that). I think MSRP is $50. They are routine deals around $40 or so.
I ended up spending more on my setup than that. I really loathed attempting to plug the puck and power cable into the AVR, so I picked up a lot of additional goodies for it. First requirement was a Male to Female HDMI Extension cable. Then a USB-C HUB with Wired Ethernet and power delivery capabilities. I haven’t upgraded my WIFI yet and coverage was spotty where it would be used at. It also has additional ports for USB thumb drives if I want to add storage to the CC.
Oh. I also disabled the integrated mode and run things in “App Mode Only”.
Here’s an insanely long YT video about the product that gives a decent overview of how it operates and behaves from 2 years ago when it launched –
Get a NAS to host your ripped video files, install Plex to share with your friends, build an HTPC running Kodi, use PlexKodiConnect to mash them together.
It’ll only cost you too much money, too much time to build, way too much time to maintain, and it even works sometimes!
I see that I still need my phone for this. Here I thought apps and everything would be on that device. Shows what I know about these streaming devices, a true noob, haha. But I stream from my phone? Won’t that mean a significant hit in video quality? Also, that’s sure to drain my phone too. Damn.
You do NOT need your Phone for this at all. This Chromecast with Google TV device has all the apps running on the puck and needs nothing but the remote.
It allows for casting from the phone, but that is optional.
Oh, OK. Then I got the wrong one on the site I showed you a photo of. But the site/store says I need a phone for that. I’ll go find the right one then. What you described to me is exactly what I’m looking for.
The old Chromecast that REQUIRES a phone to function does NOT have a remote with it and does not say “with Google TV”. The “with Google TV” means its the updated product with standalone functionality.
Yeah, the marketing and product naming of these should be better.
Sorry for taking the topic into a tangent about best way of minimizing power consumption.
To bring this a little back on topic… There’s likely going to be minimal improvements for next-gen consoles unless they fully embrace all the ML processing. Working smarter not harder sort of thing. However there has to be several power efficiency improvements that have yet to happen. The power draw figures of PC GPUs doesn’t bode well for fixed point 225 Watt footprint console devices.
Power consumption comparisons can be just as important to people as framerate comparisons, and it’s inherently a technical comparison. You don’t like it, ignore it.
Gotham Knights and Plague Tale 2 possibly being locked to 30fps on consoles is gonna bring in a lot of hot takes about the capabilities of the new generation.
Tastes aside, the aesthetic for this game is very computationally intensive (volumetric fog, very high reolustion textures, high poly models and various other effects) so still a very impressive feat from the devs.
