You’re always going to get developers who prioritise one platform over the other. Be it due to priorities, experience, or just plain old money. It happens often.
But with this gen, and especially at THIS stage, you will see a lot of games go back and forth between which system is better*****. That’s because games are still created with older design philosophies in mind, and some will perform better with faster CUs, some will perform better with more CUs. It’s the case of doing 10 things at 12 speed, or 20 things at 10 speed. It all depends on how your engine is set up to prioritise these things. (And honestly in the future you will need to do more at once, not less faster.) Add into this that you now need to set up correctly for the XSX memory allocation (which most aren’t even doing), plus that most of what actually makes XSX special isn’t even in use yet… oh and the fact we are very much still in the cross gen stage… and it’s clear why you’re seeing performance be this way. Oh and let’s not forget, PS5 cross gen games are using the full PS5 system resources with ease. XSX is using 12tf of gcn power, not rdna 2, unless they make the game purposely for the system.
The truth is, right now, you absolutely WILL get PS5 out performing XSX. And even 10 years in, you WILL get it, because priorities are dependant on the studio. You got games on PS2 at times running better than the original Xbox, and that was without taking into account the consoles strengths… it was just that teams had a grasp on PS2 development, and that’s where the money was.
With regard to that stupid pic that was going around about how system A is beating system B… well first of all console wars are bullshit and whoever made that (and we know who, and he’s biased anyway) was very selective on how it was picked. If both consoles were on par, the edge was given to PS5. If Xbox performs better then it’s an edge case and not enough. If PS5 performs better than it’s a massive win in every way. Hell there were games there that had wins****** go back and forth and various points (because it would at this stage as I explained) and it was still given to ps5 on that chart.
Sadly, everybody has a preference. Everybody. And it’s hard to not let that show. I myself prefer Xbox and certainly over my PS5 this gen (which mine hasn’t been on in months and won’t until Horizon). But you have to try and find the ones who speak about what they enjoy without putting the other down, but still understand the key differences and don’t try their best to twist the results.
It’s a shame the XSX isn’t showing its potential yet, and it’s a shame that the delta, which IS there, isn’t going to be shown yet. But that doesn’t mean it’s wrong, or doesn’t exist. The same can be said about the ps5 SSD speed. While there IS a case of massive diminishing returns there, it should still perform faster than the XSX (with no SFS/XVA). But right now it just… isn’t. Does that mean it’s a lie? It’s slow? No. It just means that no engine is taking the changes into account. Granted, it doesn’t mean what a lot of people think it means, it won’t do super secret OMG stuff the other console can’t, because as I said… it’s overkill for what the system is, balance wise. But that doesn’t mean we can ignore the technical side of things just because of a few results that aren’t even taking it into account.
Look at both systems (the ps5 SSD, and the XSX capabilities on the whole) as a runner with one leg tied up. You wouldn’t time his results based on the fact he can’t perform to his fullest.
Give things time (more so these days), and I beg people to get info from decent sources, and not random LLL gamers on Twitter.
