Games Analysis |OT| Time To Argue About Pixels And Frames!

Horizon 2 is also a cross-gen game and will still look better on PS4 than Halo Infinite will look on XSX which is the problem. The most powerful console thus far is getting beat out by an 8 year old console? Come on. Visually, it’s just not impressive and I get it’s doing other things but so will Horizon 2 and a lot of other games that are more visually impressive. Plus, there’s no Ray Tracing on Series X/S and still no first party title from Microsoft has given me Ray Tracing yet Sony has had Ray Tracing in Miles, Sackboy, Returnal and Ratchet.

Guerrilla are technical wizards when it comes to visuals. I would have loved to see Halo look better than Horizon 2 because I don’t believe it. It’s just disappointing that a year in and outside of FH 5, no Microsoft first party title has been visually impressive. I really hope this changes in 2022 especially since after Halo, cross-gen is done for Microsoft.

I simply want to see Microsoft’s first party titles be in the top tier when it comes to visuals and to be wowed by them especially when they have the more powerful and superior console.

I’m hoping Starfield ends up being a visual showcase and end up playing as amazing as it will hopefully look.

Here we go again lmao

Playground has definitely done wizardry in Graphics department

But what’s even more amazing is the 30 FPS mode

What a great improvement it is with motion blur implementation

I can’t believe I am playing this game at 30 FPS and enjoying

Unexpected

This is a bit dramatic especially considering we got Flight Sim and now FH5. Plus, not every studio and game is gonna be pushing the most visual fidelity. Oh and also, litterally like 90% of the Xbox studios still haven’t released a game, and there’s plenty that are expected to push impressive visuals, so chill out.

Oh please. Flight sim and FH5 are the best looking console games on any system period. The PS5 is the one with it all to prove as nothing they’ve released or shown comes close to these two in terms of visuals.

Halo Infinite is not pushing the bounds of graphical tech but is doing something quite different. Not every game needs to. Especially as on the Xbox side the power and capability of the system is proven beyond any doubt.

I have a feeling Starfield is going to surprise many. We even had people on other forums saying the Starfield trailer was CGI. It was a in-game engine teaser as Todd put it. But to think people thought that was CGI is the biggest compliment you can give him.

But with engine trailers I want to be careful not to hype myself up too much just yet. Halo in 2018 was a engine trailer too, however they never ever said it was a in-game teaser or anything.

I had a lot of good and polished experiences outside of first party titles, especially great indie games like Hades, Inside, Thimbleweed Park …

Not every third party game is a Cyberpunk or Microids situation.

It would be too good to be true that that visual fidelity is in a huge ass open world Bethesda game, in-game, but who knows. Better not expect it to look like that and if is, it’s gonna be a pleasant surprise.

I know what BGS games usually look like and will have my expectations in check lol.

That’s true, always a good idea to keep expectations in check.

But I can see that moon surface looking like that in-game. If the cockpit is exactly as detailed as the trailer too…would be amazing but we’ll have to wait and see. And I realize Todd Howard is known for sometimes overpromising things just a little too much, he did say the engine overhaul was the biggest since Oblivion. And TES VI will be powered by it too.

Dunno. The graphics shown in the trailer don’t really seems unattainable to me, but of course it’s better to wait and see.

Same here. They are good but not ‘I cannot believe this is possible’ good. It will not be that long before we find out at any rate.

Returnal didn’t have ‘ray tracing’, they found a use for the RT cores to accelerate non-RT GI, which is clever, but it’s misleading to say the game has ‘RT’. It’s also arguably not that impressive that Sackboy – which I believe was a PS4 game held back to launch with the PS5 – has RT. It’s pretty basic graphically and they had a tonne of headroom left for this.

If you compare Sackboy and, for example, Flight Simulator, it is pretty obvious why there is headroom for RT with one and not the other. It’s an entirely different league of base graphical fidelity.

Insomniac’s RT implementation is very impressive and ahead of most of the crowd, I’ll agree with that. They’ve nailed high graphical fidelity and RT, and that is actually pretty rare this gen. But the most impressive, for me, is Doom Eternal’s RT patch.

Insomniac give RT at 30fps, or 60fps dynamic 1440p that is almost always actually 1080p (very good TAA cleans this up though). Doom Eternal’s RT patch is just as impressive in its visual quality but delivers rock-solid 60fps at dynamic 1800p. Regardless of the patch coming to PS5, id is Xbox-owned now, so that should give you some optimism for the future.

The bottom line is that RT is a choice developers now have, not a necessity. Just because the consoles can deliver RT does not always make it the best use of resources.

Take Forza Horizon 5, for example. While you might notice the difference in Forza Vista where you are swinging a camera around close in and inspecting every detail – would anyone notice the difference if they had used RT reflections rather than the combination of techniques they use in-game instead?

It’s a fixed camera view, it’s not like anyone can do the ‘pan down to make the reflections disappear’ trick with screen space puddles. And the approach they use for car reflections is so convincing that a huge number of people assumed it was RT when it was revealed.

So what would adding RT have achieved here? It would require a significant lowering of other fidelity settings, the game would look worse, the reflections would be no better … but they’d be able to say it had RT. Does this matter? Should it? I don’t think so.

For a Bethesda game they don’t based on past output, I mean no disrespect or anything but the type of game they make, the huge worlds, the amount of content and systems in them, it’s gonna take even more time if they wanted to have the same AAA visual fidelity as on linear or usual action open world games.

I think it is interesting how in this sub is perfect fine to say how horizon zero down looks better than HI, but when a user points out advantages of HI over zero down, it falls in the argument X>>>Y and console warring. Consistency…

Pretty much hit the nail on the head. Just because a feature is there does not necessarily mean developers have to use it and instead should evaluate whether it is needed or not. RT is still expensive even with parts of it being hardware accelerated, and you can still convey similarish results with other techniques such as what Playground did with Forza.

At the end of the day, I do not want to be in a situation like the PS3 where developers shoehorned in the lame gyro controls just because they needed to hit a feature, but made no sense.

I see this false information repeated again and again and again. And I say it for the thousandth time, Forza Horizon 5 has ingame raytracing. And you can hear the difference immediately.

Also Doom Eternal and Hellblade.

So please stop these fakenews.

You apparently can’t say a game does something technically better than another game if that thing isn’t visuals.

I believe MGSV and BotW (PS360 - Wii U games) are more technically advanced games than any next-gen gen only game we’ve seen so far. But a lot of people will think this is a silly thing to think because I’m not basing it on visuals or not having loading screens.

Yes, the game can have the most amazing sandbox, physics, etc ever made, but if the foliage doesn’t bend, man…it looks bad.

To be 100% clear I take no issue with ppl saying one looks better than the other, but a little consistency in the thread should be good.

Are we sure Sackboy has RT? I don’t remember the DF video mentioning it and I can’t find any info about this.
