Games Analysis |OT| Time To Argue About Pixels And Frames!

maybe partial XVA, I somehow expect vrs tier 2 as well as direct storage. I think mesh shading and sampler feedback streaming might be missing. Directml wont show up too

Where did you get that 864p on PS5? :face_with_monocle:

by interpolation

What does it mean?

since the ps5 renders at roughly 20% the resolution of the xbox series x, the dense jungle scene had the xbox rendering at 1080p, 80% of that resolution puts it at 864p. Digital Foundry did not show this scene for the ps5 because its far into the game. But this calculation should not be correct, the ps5 version should be around 930p or something, coz you have to do the calculation by the pixel count.

Raw numbers are only good enough for comparing consoles.

But one may like playing the game or not is far away from those numbers.

Yeah, I think that can be hard to chose when you have the two platforms.

And I’ll admit, I was a “native” guy with the Xbox One X. But when I see these kind of performance and IQ, I’m all for these DRS, TAA and reconstruction techniques. Native resolutions are just a waste in some games and that’s now more and more apparent.

What I mean is that this is impossible unless they gave the 2 games on a single package.

They stripped the non rt graphic features from the engine, they modified the assets and the scenes to work with RT.

That’s why instead of just updating the game you download the whole of the new version.

And the reason they went for all this trouble is because they don’t want to develop without raytracing in mind.

I think it’s you that’s not understanding my point. I never claimed you said SS would limit, but you said that a cross gen game doesn’t prove it.

I just reiterated that their thought of process, that if they were able to add all the RT features they wanted at the game with twice the framerate as next gen they would move to a rt only process. Likely because the 60fps gives them the headroom for the higher fidelity their true next gen game will have (not accounting for more optimization)

Yea they’d have to create a wrapper package that contains both games, each built with a different SDK. Or they’d have to deactivate smart delivery and grant the enhanced version just as a free entitlement and separate SKU for anybody that owns the Xbox One game. And then you could manually install the one you want. Neither solution is easy. And both would require them to support both versions separately moving forward, which given how much has changed in their build and packaging pipeline, is a lot of extra work.

The game isn’t utilizing next gen storage meaningfully on either platform.

Gamersyde footage, which means really good quality!

Wasn’t 4A complaining about the Series S at some point? I wonder how it looks on there.

Don’t think so. Quite the opposite iirc. You can see how it looks on XSS in the DF vid. The thing ppl are confused about is the 546p lower DRS limit. Ppl seem to think that is what is scaled to fit the 1080p target for the TV screen, which is not the case as the game uses reconstruction. You can check the image quality on a 1080p screen right now and looks great, even with the IQ being only very slightly soft. There is a graphical issue in the draw distance for some patches of grass, but otherwise it looks really good even on XSS.

Ppl should be real careful jumping to conclusions on resolution figures without first understanding the technqiues being used.

Actually 80% of 1080p is 965p. You can’t use just one axis.

Also people should not expect locked native res for games. That means most of the time the GPU isn’t being utilized. Either you should have dynamic res or unlocked fps to take advantage of the full power of the gpu.

Just as a point of reference for @enski and anyone else worried about the XSS image quality, these are from XSS:

Promise people that whoever buys a XSS doesnt really pay attention to this Digital Foundry stuff that has plagued console wars and just wants an affordable entry into next gen.

Series S doesn’t have any competition… Why even bother about its capability

Its unique value is price and support of 23 studios which will put all there efforts on it as primary development
