Sounds like preparation for the update. I PRAY they have sequel in work behind closed door.
I think it’s obvious that KI will continue especially now that James Goddard is head of ki.
No whether that means a season 4 that updates the engine and roster on top of new moves or a new game. That waits to be seen.
Whatever it is they are doing, it’s clear they aren’t bringing back IG just to work on one balance update and then bouncing, it would make no sense
I guess a Season 4 is possible but i’d say them working on the update to give the fans something fresh while they work on a sequel in the background
A season 4 is going to be held back by still being an XB1 game from 2013 so I think a sequel just makes far more sense or maybe they will do both lol
But a KI2 or Season 4 is definitely more likely than them doing nothing
To be fair, that never stopped Capcom from making 3 extra renditions of SFII, with new features in each, with the first of which coming out 12 YEARS after SFII.
There could be both in works. Like someone here said, Capcom did that for SFV before migrating to VI.
Good point.
I am curious what could be held back from keeping it on xbox one… outside of a graphical upgrade.
Unless they plan on a huge fight world like SF6. I cant see how or why an xbox one sku would hold back the game.
(though keeping an engine operational on multiple consoles and pc specs still will add more work)
And if this was the case they could easily pull something similar to WoW back in the day around the cataclysm expansion. and say from season 4 onwards the game can only be played on these pc specs / systems (xbox series consoles).
(yes, I know Wow isn’t on consoles but after an expansion the upped the min requirements to play the game… same process could be applied here)
I think the biggest thing that would hold back a potential season 4 is the hex engine as Iron Galaxy and MS have stated engine limitations being issues for many feature requests.
Which you could do a engine overhaul or a port to a new engine for season 4 or just do a new game.
I think season 4 might be more likely since it fits with the pitch for KI after it transitioned from being a 360 xbox live arcade game. Which fit the more live service format.
though looping back to my original question what do you think could be held back?
Well there’s always going to be things that you can’t do with a game that old, or rather, you might be able to but it would take so much work that at that point, why wouldn’t you make a sequel?
Engines and tech that old will have been built in a way that new tech and hardware weren’t considered for, iirc KI was actually originally designed for 360 but then decided to make it as a launch XB1 game so in a way the tech is even older than that
Another way of looking at it is FM7 vs the new Motorsport, T10 could have maybe made huge improvements to FM7, done stuff with the engine among other things but not only would it have taken an insane amount of work but would they be able to implement absolutely everything they want in the game without building it from the ground up? I’d say it’s doubtful
Plus there’s the pure business side of it too, would a season 4 be cool? Sure but it would still just be more content for a 10 year old game, it’s never going to get the same attention that a a brand new game in the series would get
I’m not against a Season 4 AND a sequel but if it’s a choice between S4 OR a sequel then a sequel makes far more sense
So like i said in my origional post… it is an old engine designed for the live arcade in the 360 days…
I also agree with you that it may not be cost effective to retrofit an old engine and just port everything or make a new game on a new engine.
This version of Ki still has from my recollection the lowest input delay of any fighting game ( 81 miliseconds if i recall?) Strive and the others games that use unreal have larger input delays.
So there is that trade off as well… the KI fanbase is now used to crisp low input combat. Hopefully they can reach on a new engine.
However, the question remains… What do you think could be held back?
is it just time delays on fiddling with an old engine?
What features can you come up and would like to see in a New KI that could not be done?
Like I mentioned in the original wall of text I could see a SFVI fight world feature being an issue. As well as some graphics, and maybe an SSD and more ram could help with lowering the latency input. (though like I mentioned earlier in my post… this may be difficult as other fighting games to my knowledge haven’t hit as low of latency as ki) as reasons for not including the OG Xbox one. But overall I cant really think of any feature a 2d fighting game could have that couldn’t be handled by older hardware.
Not trying to be confrontational (and apologies if I sound that way) but genuinely curious what features or things you’d like to see that in theory would be held back.

Okay, that’s funny.
Street Fighter 6 got nominated for 3 awards at the Game Awards. It’s definitely going to win 1, maybe even 2, but it got seriously snubbed from the main Game of the Year nomination. FGs get no respect .
Didn’t they even have a merged category for Fighting and Racing Games the one year? It feels like they both get snubbed.
What is so odd is the amount of disrespect fighting, beat’em up, and racing games get (regardless if they’re top-class) when they helped build up the industry thanks to the HUGE popularity of the genres in arcades back in the day.
Expecting too much from people who don’t actually enjoy games as a whole but only enjoy “AAA” bangers.
One of the many reasons I don’t take the VGAs seriously in the least.
day before thanksgiving stream. Im excited
A CRT that was sitting in my closet actually works so I hooked up my 360 to it (the classic 2D fighters look amazing on it!) and I’m thinking I should buy all the best classic fighters available on the 360 before the entire store vanishes.
Any suggestions on what to pick up? I have all the typical games that you would think of but I still won’t mind anyone suggesting the obvious ones. One that I don’t have that I’m still kicking myself for not getting was Marvel vs Capcom 2 (I actually thought I had it but I only had the demo! It’s been delisted for a decade now).
One set of games I do have on my list is Darkstalkers Resurrection.
But yeah even if it’s the most obvious one I honestly wouldn’t mind because I might be overlooking games just like how I overlooked MVC2. Thanks in advance!
Also I won’t have any spending money until January so I’m going to be cutting it close!
I’ve played a bit of the Tekken 8 demo and happy to see the series with nice, crisp graphics on Xbox, after playing the previous games strecthing back to T6 the last few weeks!
Arcade Quest mode seems a nice evolution of the one in the VF5 disk version, so keen to check more of that out. Not sure if I’ll pick it up day one though, might wait for the ultra premium superfantastic edition to go on sale first!
I finally got around to adding MK1 to the OP. It’s great to see so much FG variety on Xbox, again.
