While i agree…its also some awful design choices from capcom to use such an ugly art style. SF6 has to be one of the ugliest fighting games ive seen from an art style pov.
I played the tekken beta on both series X and S and it looked incredibly crisp on S. Yes it was probably 1080p but it looked way better than SF6.
It’s not just the art but on a technical level it’s not that impressive. You’re not even seeing any self-shadowing. I personally think moving to RE engine was a mistake.
I also don’t mind the art style, but I do have an issue with how the stages are lit. There’s the lighting for the stage itself and then there is “hero lighting” on the characters so they stick out from the background which is great from a readability perspective but it also looks pretty silly.
Yeah the hair looks messed up on SX too. Just a bit sharper.
And yeah many characters look weird. It is an hybrid between cartooney and realistic. Not nice.
It is a shame that SF6 which it is a lot of fun… Looks so damn ugly.
But personally Tekken 8 looks as uninspiring as usual. That “super serious” style makes me roll eyes forever.
I think I’ll stick with SF6 and will add KI to the mix for now.
Sometimes, I feel like I must be taking crazy pills, because I legitimately love 6’s art style. Especially when I use the classic outfits for certain characters. They look like fully realized SFII models in 3D.
Well, if we’re talking about WT, then I agree. I usually do not lump it in with the main game because it feels like a completely different game tacked on to SF6 - partially due to the art direction.
I still do not think the core game is bland, though.
Same. SF4 was ugly as sin and SF 5 looked just barely better than that as far as art direction goes.(looks like shit compared to SF6 IMO) I wasn’t exactly in love with SF6 art style when I saw the first trailer, it definitely grew on me as I saw more gameplay. It wasn’t the art style I wanted as I was hoping Capcom took a look at the best looking fighter, Guilty Gear Strive and went more that route but this was a good compromise. They couldn’t release anything that looked too much like S4 and 5 which looked too similar, and a “realistic” looking Street Fighter is something that should NEVER happen under any circumstance.
I came to terms with the fact that there will never be an SF game that looks anywhere near as good as Third Strike , but SF6 looks damn good though.
I thought I was the only one in here that loved the way SF6 looked haha…animations are just amazing in this game, good to see that I am not alone. I also thought that SF4 looked good but I never liked SF5 for some reason, I’d say that it aged worse than SF4.
And yeah 3rd Strike still looks amazing and has the best OST in the series as well IMO!
I will have to agree more with FiendFlag here in that I’ve always loved 4 aesthetic. The problem with V is that some parts of the game look amazing: particle effects, certain models and animations. And others… don’t: hair, certain faces (Ken), and certain later season animations. This inconsistency hurt a package that I liked on the whole.
Yeah I don’t mind the art style I just don’t like how it’s executed on a technical level.
I personally think that this is the direction that SF4 should went into. I don’t mind the character proportions that much in SF4 but I don’t like how they were portrayed in an odd cartoony fashion. So I thought that SF5 was a step in the right direction in terms of how characters were portrayed, but more than that I liked how it was executed on a technical level with better materials and lighting.
What I like about SF6 is that, like you say, it looks like the Street Fighter 2 art realized. Especially the fighter poses in Super Street Fighter 2.
Which brings me to Fatal Fury, I’ve always wanted a game that looked like Shinkiro’s art and the latest version is looking more like it.
But it’s not quite there. And maybe this is just me I just love his art and maybe it’s nostalgia but I’ve also seen nothing like it. It really defined SNK to me in my youth
When I look back at how 4 & 5 ended up, I’m fairly confident that they will be back.
Actually, and I suppose this is the best thread to discuss this, I am a bit concerned about how much things will cost at the end of the day. I mean this goes back to the days of Street Fighter 2 because I keep buying multiple additions of each Street Fighter. I’ve always justified it to myself. But now I’m wondering if I’m accepting getting ripped off.
I’ve always justified it because of the sheer hours I put into it with my friends and alone. But with SF5, things started feeling like it wasn’t a good value.
So we’ll see how things pan out! I paid just under $90 Canadian for this regular edition. So no new characters for me.
I’m hoping they give Third Strike more love when it comes to returning characters in the near future. Remy, Sean , Makoto, Elena , Necro and even Q. I also think they did Alex dirty in 5 with that awful redesign , bring him back too.
I’ve been enjoying the new arcade stick but Maximillion was right that the muscle memory of using a standard controller for years is going to be a thing. It’s weird, even though I’ve grown up in American arcades that use the octo-gate, I still prefer the square gate and find certain moves, like the Shoryuken, easier to pull off with the square gate. For $150, I definitely recommend the Mayflash F500 Elite.
Down to play if anyone wants to jump into a fighting game. I have a decent collection and don’t mind losing lol. Still think it would be cool to have a community night where a bunch of us just chill, playing a fighter, like the good ol’ days in the arcade.
