Every First Party Xbox Game Will Launch Day One on Game Pass - Sarah Bond

I feel like GP Ultimate price will be raised a bit before the next COD launches in november.

I mean, it’s expected as every subscription is doing this right now.

I’m more interested in when Xbox will do it.

Another raise (they did one last year) would be unfortunate. Closing in on the not worth to keep running territory.

Adjusted by inflation price is closing in on $19, so $18?

Most of the subs I have are either reaching this territory or are already there. Pretty soon I’m just going to be that guy that sits out on his porch staring at squirrels whilst waiting to die. Man, that got dark.

Jesus, haha.

But yeah. Netflix reached that territory for me, so now I sub a couple of months per year instead of having it running. Which means they get $40 per year from me instead of the $120 they used to get.

It’s ok though, they’ll just raise their rates again to make up for that lost revenue. :face_holding_back_tears:

Oh yeah, right, they raised it last year. So maybe they won’t this year.

I totally expect a raise this year though…

Edit : it was on a The Verge article from Tom Warren and Xbox debatting putting COD on GP or raising the price of GP. So if they are keeping COD on GP, they may raise the price of the subscription I guess.

All part of the master plan for folks to be okay with multiplatform games. Arkane Austin and Tango were a necessary sacrifice.

I only have one video streaming subscription. Shudder. And I only keep that one because it is like $6 month or something and I love horror movies. Other than that, I only have Apple TV+, but that is because I have a Mac and have the Apple Premium sub and it is included. I mostly use it for extra cloud storage and apple music.

GP to date, I’m not sure I have ever actually paid for a month of. I really only use game pass to test things I am curious about, then just buy them anyway.

You could always do what I do - sign up for a month to play the day one game that you want to play, complete it within that month and then cancel the subscription. It’s what I do and next game up is Hellblade 2. A nice $11 monthly rental.

Besides, it’s not like you need all those games in Game Pass at your disposal anyway due to your massive backlog. Hehehe.

We will see. MS has a tendency to fuck up messaging.

Worth it to me comes down to how many games I would have purchased a year that are day one, and whether I plan to play online.

I’ve always looked at Game Pass Ultimate as I’m paying $7/mth to gain access to 400+ games across Xbox and PC/handheld. The other $10/mth I was paying anyways in order to play multiplayer with my friends.

Also, while every year is different, this year alone I would have purchased Avowed, Call of Duty, Hellblade 2, Indiana Jones, and MLB The Show on release at a minimum. That’s $330 worth of games I’m getting for $204 (or $84 if I exclude multiplayer from the GPU total).

Here’s hoping the prices stay relatively the same.

Yes, of course it’s fine now, this is in the light of possible further price hikes where it might not be any more. (I do similar calculations for day one games I would actually have purchased mainly.)

Just like my Netflix example I used above, where they reached that point a while back.

There’s definitely a limit to how much I’m willing to fork out for rentals.

It would probably dissuade some if they keep raising the prices, unless they are at least on part with the competition because I feel like the value offering of Gamepass Ultimate is beyond what the competition has. But even at 20$ it would still be a steal imo. Like this month for example, I’m about to finish Harold Halibut, just right there I have my money’s worth and then I’ll start the Small Kitty Big City game or whatever it’s called and that is apparently quite short, so by then I’m already several dozens of dollars in savings, and let’s be honest, I doubt I’ll be replaying those games unless they’re really good but then I’ll wait for a 5$ sale down the road.

The way I see it is, if I finish 1 indie game per month, I have my money’s worth. Then all the AAAs on top from MS and 3rd parties as well as GPU perks. It’s almost too good to be true for me, especially since I’m still stacked until like July of 2026!

Yeah, the value will be different for every individual of course.

I’m generally not in a rush to play games (especially not in the state most release in nowadays) so the “omgIneedtoplaythisdayone” are not that frequent.

Re: the value of Game Pass

I find it incredibly hard to quantify for myself. Prior to joining Game Pass I think I actually spent less money per year than a year’s worth of Game Pass costs. So in that sense, I’m not saving money per se.

But I also played a lot less. The number of games I’ve played solely because of Game Pass vs. the number of games I would’ve played whether Game Pass existed or not… Well, the ratio is quite lopsided.

I was always going to play the heavy hitters. Your Starfields and your Hitmen and your Sniper Elites. But Tinykin? Planet of Lana? A Short Hike? Maybe, maybe not. But with Game Pass I did, and they have been some of my favourite gaming experiences.

And I put a lot of value in having access to trying all these games with no risk, as well as the automatic curation that the Game Pass library represents. It’s all just so convenient.

So, yeah, I probably shouldn’t admit it, but I’d probably remain a Game Pass member at twice the price.

Yes, it does assuming it’s done well. Xbox hasn’t managed their PC store well, so it hasn’t been competitive. To me the number 1 problem all the other PC stores face is they lack a robust library of games. Steam basically has everything from the distant past to the present. Other thing is most of the stores aren’t known as they never market their stores. I think Xbox had a good chance with the Xbox app but succumbed to this issues and more.

Most Xbox games are not on PC and the few that are there are mostly not even Play Anywhere. Why buy a game on the PC store when the Steam version offers better features like big picture and Steam deck along with possibility of Mods. the only reason to try Xbox on PC is Game Pass. However, I have often thought Microsoft likes it that way, having their store for Game Pass and Steam has a way to sell them.

I hope this quiets Game Pass naysayers, I believe in the dream

It probably will happen, but like Mort said it would start to get to the not worth it point for me.

I guess it just really depends on what games you play. If Redfall, Starfield and Forza are worth it, I feel that Hellblade, Avowed, Indy and COD have to be even more worth it. We’re finally getting games hitting from acquisitions from years ago, the value is better than before
