Embracer Group has entered into an agreement to acquire Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal, Square Enix Montréal (~1,100 employees) and a catalogue of IPs including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, etc (total up $300M)

Very valid point. And Embracer seems to flip studios. MS could easily pay above asking for CD/Eidos if they really want them and I think Embracer would sell

Haha, yeah that doesn’t sound very reliable.

100% if MS deems them super viable and necessary, I could easily see MS buy them and the IP back, especially if they still struggle like under SE with poor profit margins. For all we know Embracer knows this too and maybe just holding them for MS

As well, it all depends on what MS wants. ABK is going to add a lot of support studios and Grubb says they’ll do non-CoD stuff. I could easily see High Moon take over from Crystal if needed. They are California based, same size and have a ton of talent, but are lacking some higher up leadership due to going to the CoD mines. Initiative is all leadership, no boots on the ground.

It’s not as if anyone has ever used LinkedIn to embellish their experience, achievements or skills…

Mhm very true, I didn’t know that was where that figure came from. Wonder what they did pay? Add up with what they have paid to put games like the Tomb Raiders, Deus Ex,Avengers and GotG on Game Pass and renting Crystal Dynamics for Perfect Dark and I don’t know, I think a purchase would have made sense after all hehe.

CD said Microsoft paid for development of the game, probably marketing too, it’s not unlikely that they paid $100m.

Basically SE was so desperate to sell practically their Western division they sold Tomb Raider, Deus Ex IPs etc for $300 million - although this may not be everything - and chucked in the studios for free.

The fact the sale has taken place does not surprise anyone, as this has been coming for a while. The real surprise is that it appears hardly anyone was interested if we go by the sale price.

I am still curious what transpired there especially considering Darrell Gallagher’s history with CD.

$300mil for those teams and their tentpole IP? Wow. SE are completely incompetent with making business decisions.

Well, they certainly have run those studios into the ground :joy:

Tomb Raider is the only one that I feel still really has any weight behind it. Deus Ex and Legacy of Kain are awesome, but they are names that hit home with olds like myself and I think that nostalgia is clouding people a bit on their current appeal. That is not to say new games wouldn’t be a good thing, Id buy all of them, but I don’t believe for a second if they announced a new legacy of kain that it would light the collective world ablaze.

But lifetime combined sales of Human Revolution and Mankind Divided are around 12 million units. Two games over the course of a decade…its good/decent, but not earth shattering.

The studios were barely breaking even and carrying a heap of debt.

I know Jez has odd takes at times, but I thought below was a sensible one IMO.

Voted yes because I know what im getting is worth more and would easily make back that money sooner rather than later and afterwards, basically becomes a steal.

Best case scenario is devs who wanted to make a Deus Ex game that isn’t cut short and filled with micro transactions can finally do so.

Could be Game Pass, could be moneyhats

My guess is if Xbox reups CD’s contract on future Perfect Dark games or brings in Eidos for help

Both Game Pass and PS+ tiers might be interested in that back catalog of the titles. Maybe some other deals too. The war of the subscription services will commence.
