Embracer Group has entered into an agreement to acquire Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal, Square Enix Montréal (~1,100 employees) and a catalogue of IPs including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, etc (total up $300M)

I don’t think that Square Enix West acquisition would affect anything. There is more to it 100%.

After all, not a single politician raised a voice regarding gaming at all. In fact nobody even mentions gaming anywhere.

This x 1000.

2019 COD Modern Warfare alone has sold more than 30 million copies (and that number is from 2020). The series went past 400 million units last year.

Edit: and if you need a frame of reference for that, that is more than Grand Theft Auto or Super Mario Bros series.

Embracer is basically buying the ip and getting the studios for free since they never made square any profits. Plus sony only cares about the jrpg side of square and would have laid off the west side studios.

Since it’s looking like the deal is for more than just the mentioned $300 Million US, it’s time for a poll:

Would you buy the specified Studios and IP for more than $1 Billion US?

  • Yes.
  • No.
  • Don’t Know.

Why Microsoft basically cornered the market on fps and wrpg dont you think sony is trying to do the same with fighting games and jrpgs. If they own square they dont need to buy time exclusives anymore

People come out strong on COD

Vangaurd was the best selling game in the year despite being the worst COD in years

COD franchise is just on another level…

It really can’t be overstated. The value proposition of buy a Series X|S and a game pass sub and you can play every COD game past present and future is going to be for MS.

Imagine with cod on gamepass and they drop xbox live once the gamepass numbers are at 50m they will basically corner the casual market. No casual gamer would buy a ps5. The only thing missing is owning GTA

LOL, it occurs to me that Crystal Dynamics has been saved by the bell as far as Avengers. “We TOTALLY had so much awesome new content planned, it was almost ready to go, then the acquisition changed plans, so now we’ll be sunsetting the game instead. It’s outside our control. The game would have been so good though and had so much content, honest.”

If the true price is $704m with $404m of debt it’s starting to make more sense why there wasn’t as much interest.

Still a massive shame in my opinion. A large conglomerate like MS could eat up that debt like it was nothing. I suppose the concern is that it could continue running into debt.

These franchises on there own are still worth that IMO.

  • Tomb Raider = Uncharted
  • Legacy of Kain = God of War
  • Guardians of the Galaxy = Spider-Man

Personally for me it’s the talent working on these type of games which Xbox needs IMO, yes Sony are moving to GaaS but they already have a solid line up.

Satya looked at it and said that it would be not cool for him to come out and announce 300m acquisition. We need to think bigger :fire:

Does SE still have western studios or those 3 were 100% of their western division ?

They have some publishing branch there but that’s it. No studios anymore. In fact some people speculate that Square Enix acquisitiion would require only Japanese approval now.

GoTG flopped and it is a licensed IP anyway. LoK is dead anyway.

That tweet about the actual cost has been deleted by the way, maybe it wasn’t phrased right or something?

Didn’t Microsoft pay $100m for a one year exclusive Tomb Raider game btw? lol

I need to see the financials.

If MS loses the deal they would have to hand over 10x the amount these studios were bought for

It’s been a busy day for me. What’s the story on the acquisition?

I voted yes because MS has unlimited money and the only thing stopping them from buy everyone is laws.

That was from a Square Enix employee’s personal LinkedIn page, i wouldn’t use that as evidence of a $100m deal being done.
