I mean Aspyr (despite being owned by Embracer’s Saber Interactive) accepted the moneyhat for KOTOR so…Embracer’s embrace does not change anything.
Oh I don’t doubt that. But I genuinely thought MS was looking for a studio to fill that gap. I mean they sure filled the RPG gap, good lord, haha. Racing is covered, horror (hopefully) is covered with Tango, even if the next game isn’t, but a studio really known for beloved (cinematic) third person action adventures is something they could use more of.
I realize they have NT and I will never stop hoping that some day they’ll make something like Enslaved again.
I think the exact reason for selling these studios is that they are shifting towards UE5 from internal engine…
This will increase the operating cost even more and profit margins were already very low for these studios
Well they technically now have a set of studios making third person games (allegedly). It is also probably solidifies the idea that Indiana Jones is a third person game.
I’m not yet ready to get my hopes up for that, the last one, haha.
Oh shit, you right about that. A timed exclusive indeed.
I feel like switching to UE5 would decrease operating cost, no? The onboarding and training for new employees would be severely reduced. Not to mention, it opens up your talent pool a ton. I think that’s why so many companies are switching over to UE5.
Square selling off their West half makes sense, ultimately they weren’t pleased with the results they were seeing even if the expectations were ridiculous and sometimes the result of mismanagement. They didn’t know how to run them. They sold them laughably low too.
What peeves me is this - I would be really happy if Square Enix was gonna use that new surplus (well, as much as one can call $300M a surplus) to strengthen their Japanese game development and IPs and double down on their strengths but oh my god they are using this money for all the wrong shit and that’s such a Square Enix thing to do I hate this company so much.
They now have to pay royalties to epic for the engine… Before there was no cost for the engine they were using
Plus there are no evidence of them hiring more for the studio
The current employees will actually cost money to be trained in UE5
UE5 makes sense for new hiring… But to upgrade/train current employees it will cost more actually
Devs cost money too.
They saw the success of Ubisoft and decided that they can do better
I mean there was, it was expensive and specialized developers for their internal engine.
Can’t wait for those NFTs in FFR2.

The only thing I get from this is…“insiders” know jackshit about acquisitions
I was just reminded of the fact that a few years ago Microsoft paid 100 million for timed exclusivity on Rise of the Tomb Raider. Now the whole Western Division including Tomb Raider just got sold for 300 million. I know the numbers were bad on CD/Eidos but god damn.
Not like this…
Now they’ll keep paying for their partnership if they want more Perfect Dark.
Or hand it off to one of the numerous Freed from COD studios they will have soon enough.
Agreed. If they were more like they were in the 90’s early 2000’s (Squaresoft) like when MS first tried to get them i’d be all for it. Current day Square Enix seems like a shitshow and i am somewhat doubtful that even Sony wants them tbh.
If they get freed from CoD anytime soon that is.
The absolute whiplash that just hit me when I realize that MS paid for Tomb Raider exclusivity for 1 year at the price of $100M but Square just sold off essentially the entire Western half and all the IPs for $300M.
