Embracer Group has entered into an agreement to acquire Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal, Square Enix Montréal (~1,100 employees) and a catalogue of IPs including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, etc (total up $300M)

I also included more details in my message than just that sentence.

I’m hating this ABK deal a little more everyday lol.

The thing is that there is no indication that Embracer will give low budgets or won’t be interested in developing big games or providing the support for that.

One reason I like Xbox buying studios is because I know they’ll be better funded, not just because they’re on the platforms I prefer. I apply to this to any platform holder, really. Even Epic Games, I think Alan Wake 2 will be a better funded game because Epic wants to grow Epic Games Store instead of expecting the highest ROI on the game like third party publishers do.

You and me both. I fucking said they would miss out on actual GOOD stuff because of that shit. FUCK.

Just wait when somebody else will acquire WB and Microsoft acquires nothing :joy:

Talks for ABK started relatively late, didn’t they? So I wonder is there a chance MS knew about SE shopping around with these studios before ABK even came into their vision? I guess we can’t know for sure.

I’m already expecting them to acquire nothing from WB or just NR.

For me NRS is enough. Everything else does not really matter if DC IPs are not involved.

But, but, but we’ll have Call of Duty multiplat and Candy Crush!

They made a partnership with CD, I’m sure they should have known something.

And don’t get me wrong, I fully understand the size and importance of the ABK acquisition for MS, it just isn’t important at all to me.

I wouldn’t be blaming the ABK deal on MS not buying CD/Eidos

The fact they only went for 300m shows pretty much nobody was interested

Except for that they could get highly talented developers to fill that third person action adventure gap, which definitely is a real thing. Unless MS is just fine with that.

Perfect Dark’s development won’t be impacted, those contracts will still be in place unless Embracer wants to go to court with Microsoft (which they don’t and won’t).

Agreed man, completely.

Yeah it will be what happens after PD that’s the unknown

Do they work a deal with Embracer for a sequel assuming they want it as a franchise or do they just nnab a bunch of their talent instead and bulk up TI

The fact that they partnered with CD - and it happened even when ABK was not even on the cards - several months earlier - means that Microsoft did not want to buy CD at that time as I doubt that SE suddenly decided to sell the studios.

They can always make a third party publisher deal. Do you really think that since Bethesda acquisition Microsoft would not buy studios if they were interested in them?

We’ll see if CoD stays multiplat or not, if studios are freed from it or not, if they give more time in the oven for the franchise or not, if they revive franchises that I actually care for or not.

There’s just too many “ifs” in this deal for me to care in any capacity for it, it’s my opinion but I won’t really care for it IF they don’t actively change how they develop and produce new and old IPs
