Probably just a cross-over event where FortNite gets some FF7 skins…
According to google Kingdom Hearts 3 has sold 6.7 million copies with 18% being on Xbox (that kind of margin is not inconsistent with what I have seen for Final Fantasy games). By taking 18% of 6.7, multiplying it by $60 and taking away 30% for digitial sales - we can estimate the absolute best case scenario revenue for game sales on Xbox as 50.7 million dollars. The actual number would be smaller as of the 1.2 million copies sold on Xbox some would be physical copies (with lower profit margins than digital) and not all copies would have sold at full price, we’re not factoring in regional price differences or DLC revenue here. But basically we can say the revenue on Xbox is somewhere below 50 million dollars. Suddenly I’m starting to see why Square is so firmly in Sony’s wallet these days.
For context: MIcrosoft paid 100 million for one year of Tomb Raider Rise exclusivity so we’re not outside of the ballpark here.
Yes and no remember at the time kh3 and ffxv were announced before the consoles launched then the Xbox was being outsold by a wide margin. So most games sales skewed towards PlayStation
With the margins being clearer on sonys favor many smaller Devs skipped Xbox or the money PlayStation would offer for exclusive made more logical sense.
Now any new deal is going to cost a hell of alot more for 1-2 years exclusivity especially for larger AAA games. I am willing to bet someone at square is pissed they didn’t ask for more money when this gen is so much closer and there main terriorty Xbox is selling quite well
The problem is that time exclusivity sacrifices long term growth over immediate money. It worked only when Playstation was the market leader that expected to grow infinitely. And even then FF7R sold around 7m on 100m+ user base. Also due to nature of the moneyhats they bring the same people to buy the same games eventually.
Now? You can’t seriously expect Playstation to sell as many consoles as PS4 and that is home console market that is not expanding much. With Microsoft doing much better than ever and them investing into the expansion the market via PC/XCloud/consoles (with cheaper console they open console market to more people or even bring those who play only on Switch). On other hand, FF time exclusivity for Playstation will bring basically the same people who bought it last gen (if not less due to some people buying it last time for the first time and now switched to Xbox for example (due to cheaper entry point, availability etc.).
FF16 moneyhat with 1 year exclusivity for PS (without PC) was incredibly stupid decision by SE, but again - they expected PS5 to be “PS4 on steroids”. Not a single third party benefits from going exclusive to Playstation.
Even though the split favours Sony it still holds franchise back because xbox influencers and more word of mouth can help build franchise. For example the souls games wouldn’t be as big as it is if they stayed Playstaton exclusive. Look at Bloodborne it was hailed as greatest souls game, but only sold 2 million copies because it was Playstation exclusive. However ever since souls games been multiplat they continued to grow because positive word of mouth from all platforms
Then take out the platform holders 30% cut and the case gets even worse.
I have huge doubts it’s FF7R based on Switch being mentioned. The PS4 could barely handle the game how the heck will the Switch unless it’s a streaming version.
Nobody expects it to be a native version. Cloud version is a possibility though.
Snitch apparently liked a tweet saying “it’s not FF7R, it’s crisis core”
Man, so could this possibly happen today?
Oh I had that 30% factored in already
Bringing Crisis Core to xbox and switch but not FF7R would be a classic 200IQ Square moment
and I fully expect it to happen
yeah, probably a psp port looking at the tweet “the snitch” liked. oh well.
Would be absolutely ridiculous, but normal for them, lol. But that can’t be all SE’s doing though. They bring a game that isn’t even remotely as popular to Xbox but the big one not. That is partly a Sony thing too I bet then.
Best to wait and see. Maybe it will be like that meme girl of “why not both.”
That is where I am leaning, I mean even if there’s signs pointing to a Crisis Core remaster we’ve still also got evidence pointing to at least a Steam release of the game, it’s not crazy that another port might be announced.
All this time I kept figuring that FF7 Remake Xbox port was right around the corner, but Persona 5 would never come.
Is he also claiming it’s coming to the switch? That would almost be more surprising for me lol Hope it’s all true, we’ll see today.
