The environments look amazing to me and overall visually I think the game looks very, very good
I think better death ragdoll and more impactful hit reactions from enemies would do wonders for the games reception, they are the only thing that looks “off” about the game right now imo
A lot of this footage is old though and the game is likely late 2024 so still lots of time to improve things
One time the enemy does react to being hit, other times you just see blood spatter and he doesn’t react to the attack (like Skyrim), it’s inconsistent and I have no doubt they’ll make it consistent.
Framerate also doesn’t seem fully smooth yet, it shows it’s in development and I like that, it’s not some perfectly made slice just for the stream.
Yeah, there are some animation issues that make the combat seem unresponsive at times, but they have plenty of time to smooth it out. Since they have till the end of November to release the game and the trailer, probably being made pre-Christmas giving them about a year of time to make the necessary tweaks.
From my own viewing, the smaller lizards were reacting to every other hit with a sword. With only the larger lizards reacting less because those hits wouldn’t be enough to stagger them or they were blocking.
Other than that it’s mostly the wand combat, pretty much a light weapon imo, that has less hit reaction for the smaller enemies.
Yep the inconsistency in some behavior likely means that some aspects are just not polished yet. Also btw those water swimming parts looks good, honestly Obsidian definitely made a big upgrade to how their games look, even more than I expected. know some people don’t count anything that’s not the top tier graphics as great, but anyone who knows Obsidian can immediately tell this is something they never had before and it’s noticable, but some crazies will probably not say that because it doesn’t look as good as Red Red Redemption 2 or something
Constantly with the refrain of “We want gameplay depth and quality instead of cutting edge graphics”, only for any game that actually delivers that to get criticized. Next game to go through these motions will be Dragon Age Dreadwolf, book it.
Baldur’s Gate 3 was like the one case where gamers actually accepted a very nice looking game that has “fine” graphics/animation/performance rather than cutting edge and amazing, because it excelled so much in other areas. But even then you have weird reactions like MrMatty going on about how the character and facial animation blows previous games away and I’m like, is he watching the same game that I am?
I wouldn’t worry too much about it. They are well aware about the combat system.
“Our goal was to try to make it feel visceral, right?” Paramo explains. “To make the sense of hitting [enemies] feel impactful … like Vermintide. We’re trying to get our inspiration from there, just that masterclass in having a sense of hitting and impact.”
“I’m definitely really proud of what the gameplay team has done … even our melee combat is feeling fantastic,” says Patel. “I really do feel like it’s going to stand head and shoulders above when it comes to fantasy first-person action RPG melee combat.”
There’s always a narrative that skews some people’s opinions and takes to places they don’t believe themselves deep down, but the need to fit in with the narrative compels them to. It’s like with that same game how many people were believing and saying that it launched perfect and polished with no issues, content complete, with no DLC or extra paid content whatsoever, and in the time of launch you could say that unchecked and people just went with it no matter how much you prove them wrong.
I think at this point complaints about combat and AI are pretty silly. AI will get tweaked later in development and you can’t really judge combat until you actually feel it on your controller.
That said given the previews they obviously put a lot of thoughts and mechanics in combat and the easy switchable loadouts means their will be lots of strategy and variety in combat,
The game looks better and better each time it is shown and they still have 8 months to polish it up.
I feel the nitpick is why devs don’t share what they’re working on because general audience doesn’t understand how video games are made . At least with film there’s a general understanding of some things but gamers are conditioned not being able to know process of how video game creation works
Unfortunately, Sony has brainwashed people with the use (or abuse) of vertical slices tailored exclusively for showcases, now people expect to see a couple of minutes trailer perfectly polished, even if the game is years away. Obviously this strategy has its cons, for example you took time from actual developing the game. It’s the same issue for Indy, I’ve seen countless reactions where people are angry about 1st person “because Uncharted is 3rd person”.
Only looking at the upgrade from TOW to this one you can be certain the game will be excellent (TOW itself was very good, but clearly cut here and there for budget issues).
This just looks so good. I also like the fact there are issues with some frames. It shows it’s all in-game and all real-time being played by a living person
I can’t think of a open-world RPG that looks better myself
Horizon FW perhaps? It’s considered a RPG by plenty, I don’t have a PS5 myself but often you see folks praising that to be one of the best looking games yet.
But wow at the improvements over last year. I remember how people here said we shouldn’t expect any big changes in the visuals. Well…
The game of Avowed takes place entirely in the Living Lands so you won’t be visiting other locations in the world," Patel says. “Players who are familiar with past games will certainly recognise some concepts and even a few characters - certain events that they either saw or heard about in those old games do occasionally come up in references in Avowed - but we wanted to make sure that this was an experience that players having their first adventure in the world of Eora could jump right into. So those references are there for people who are going to get them and appreciate them, but players who aren’t familiar with them will skate right on through them.”
However, while Avowed will, apparently, take place shortly after the events of Deadfire, Patel says it won’t narratively be connected to it. “The two storylines are very separate,” she adds - as separate as the continents they take place on. “The process that Eothas sets in motion at the end of Deadfire is not an instantaneous state-change in the world,” she explains. “It’s something that is going to take place and slowly change the world over generations, not overnight, so that gives us a bit of breathing room to give the player some other adventures in the interim.”
Avowed takes place shortly after PoE 2 which means more reason to play this (and the first one) fantastic game.
