An analysis of FF7R and Xbox [warning, long OP!]

The only thing that carries FF is that it does not have competition. And even then it is on decline. Especially with Sony going aggressive for PC moneyhats. Only brain dead company would accept a deal like that because in the modern market ignoring PC is absolutely stupid decision.

I think ignoring any platform is a brain-dead decision, except for first parties, in those cases their own platform+PC is the normal decision to make.

I’m glad MS realized that a long time ago!

We haven’t seen Avowed yet. Avowed could end up being the perfect counter to Final Fantasy 16. Hard to say without actually seeing any gameplay or knowing if they will release in the same month but a head to head of Xbox and PS5 rpg exclusives is fun to think about anyway.

Since when Avowed is JRPG?

Avowed

Final Fantasy 16

These games are going to be compared if they both are modern action RPGs with a similar medieval esthetic. One is PS5 exclusive and the other is Xbox Series exclusive. The term jrpg is mostly a relic. An argument could be made that South Park was more of a traditional Jrpg than the last few Final Fantasy games.

Just because each of them use british environment as a reference (doubt about Avowed there), it does not make them similar games at all. Not to mention FF is made in Japan, and it automatically grants some additional brownie points from certain media and gaming forum dwellers. I recall JRPG implies some turn-based mechanics, but I think this days it is becoming more and more real time.

We have yet to see how Avowed looks visually though.

Just saw this posted on other era.

Ok? I mean I mentioned that FF is using british setting.

At this point it’s only hopefulness but for the sake of fun it would be cool if both Xbox Series and PS5 each had their own exclusive medieval action rpg that releases at the same time.

For SE it is simply to get guaranteed money upfront as opposed to an unknown amount of money over time. I’d also say it shows a lack in confidence in their game, like they know it won’t be good enough to be a long term money maker. They are expecting it to be very front loaded based on the name and for it to die off quickly. The are essentially just selling on name and Sony is also paying for that brand name. Basically they can bank a guaranteed return/profit and in a few years they can release on Xbox and get some bonus money. This is different than expecting your game to be the next GTA and wanting it everywhere because you think it is going to rake in the cash.

Avowed looks as much of a jrpg as ff16 does.

I’m guessing from S-E’s perspective it’s:

Get a big sack of money from Sony to cover development costs and marketing.
Sell a good amount for such and such financial year.
Get another big sack of money from Sony to extend exclusivity or
Get big sack of money from Microsoft for Game Pass deal, while also getting to list a several-year-old game at 70 bucks to help with THAT financial year and also this will create marketing for the next entry into the series.

This is leaving out EGS/Steam/PlayStation Plus stuff

According to what Grubb-Jez said in the past, SE wanted money to port, the only big company to go backwards in support when everyone else continued and went forward, Microsoft probably said no and saw it as an attempt to wrestle in a submission as a “you need me more than we need you”, not realizing that they are now the home of WRPGs and own the biggest franchises that sells more than FF lifetime sales in a year, and they now also have all the big third party JRPGs support with Persona joining the band.

Square alienated everybody, because even on Steam PC FF7R did not set the world on fire as Persona 4 Golden did, and we’re talking about a much more estabilished franchise, the active player base is just a 1/3 to what P4G had at first week. PC players are pissed off and it shows, so are Xbox players, at this point they don’t care and will pursue those who are interested to sit in the table and talk into a deal.

Square is incompetent. There is a 0% chance that the “sack of money” from Sony is equal to the loss of sales and brand value by simply not being on Xbox at release. They’ve hurt their brand and undervalued their property.

If your wondering how this happened it’s pretty simple. Sony helped save Square from bankruptcy once and now Sony holds that over their heads. Sony gave Square some projections about 2:1 console sales over Xbox and over promised the number of PlayStation sales and underselling Xbox sales. Old school Japanese business strategy of doing business with friends and covering up leadership failures to save face.

Because they think it will because of Minecraft, except that Xbox does whatever the hell they want, if you want assurance, you buy an Xbox.

All im going to say is that in regards to Final Fantasy VII Remake itself, oh man, what an excellent game. Only the second JRPG I have ever completed. Story kind of lost me the last few hours but everything else was superb. As someone who has no history with the original FF7 and have never cared about the franchise itself, I must admit that they won me over with Remake. For anyone who owns a PS5/PS4 and is interested in playing FF7R, I recommend doing so. I’m very much looking forward to Rebirth and im even somewhat interested in FFXVI as im very happy that they’re all real time action combat as im done with turn based combat games.

To be fair, P4G on Steam launched at twenty bucks and with (minor) additional content. FFVIIR is not only a higher-than usual price at $70, I hear it’s also a pretty mediocre port. I do agree with your larger point, though and with @GamepadX’s below you.

Xbox was barely a blip on everyone’s radars, and nobody could predict the supply chain issues. Through clever planning and chance, MS are positioned to be a formidable force in the market. Square Enix made a bet based on the data they had and it’s probably paying off decently, just not as well as it probably could have.

For what it’s worth, outside of the enthusiast circles we’re in, I really doubt that the average consumer is going to boycott FFVIIR if/when it comes to Xbox down the line or whatever. It’s a prestigious brand, and it would take a lot to tarnish it. I’m of the opinion that the last good FF game was IX four whole generations ago, but I can’t deny it’s still a huge name (by all accounts, the FFXIV is really terrific, just not my bag)

I hope a stronger Xbox platform is more appealing to developers, and we see fewer moneyhats and games skipping the platform by default. It would be great if the allure of cloud gaming helped with that :grinning:

I wonde if SE have deal with sony for Valkyrie Elysium or they just didnt fancy xbox port. Strange for a gsme thst looks like a mobile game and should come to switch too

At this point i would have settled for other quality remakes/remasters of their old catalog from their Squaresoft days. When they were actually worth all the fuss. I’d love Xenogears HD. Or an HD remake of Racing Lagoon (which was never released in the west) with official translation.

Square Enix is basically mostly coasting off of their most popular entry in a long running IP with a gem or two like Octopath and Neir showing up every now and again.

Xbox owners need to forget the notion of the gaming media showing the same energy as when they were practically harassing Xbox and Square execs about the duration of the Tomb Raider exclusivity , it ain’t happening.

Also i won’t sit here and tell people what they should or shouldn’t buy with their hard earned cash, but there is no way I’m touching that crappy PSP remaster bone they decided to throw. That money goes to Atlus, and especially Capcom.

It does feel a bit like a “failson” inherited the business his parent built up.

This is where I am too. I really would rather have nothing instead of this, it just feels like it’s rubbing salt in the wound.
