It also gives them some wiggle room, probably? I’m thinking about how Starfield was announced without any platforms attached. Although I think they did officially announce FFXIV was coming to Xbox and that still hasn’t happened?
Until they finish up opening more servers for FFXIV it’s probably not a good idea to open it to a new platform, they also admitted that the xbox version is a very low priority for them at the moment.
Releasing FF14 in good faith though would maybe help nurture the FF community on Xbox for a future FF7 release. It’s their cash cow as well and I’m sure it’d gain in popularity thanks to Xbox . They have to make it next gen only though as Xbox One definitely isn’t good enough for it.
It would yeah, if I recall correctly they are launching a new datacenter with 4 new servers next month and then 4 more servers next year. the new datacenter would be the perfect time to launch it but unless they actually started working on the port again in the past 6 months I don’t think it will be ready yet
And yes it would have to be only for the series x/s as I think they will already be dropping ps4 support in the next expansion
Great point, I heard the horror stories about queues when the last expansion came out.
yep and even during off peak hours there is currently still a small queue time
Hopefully we’ll be able to point to Soul Hackers 2 and the Persona games when they finally hit xbox. Though games like Square Enix’s own Nier Automata, Elden Ring and Scarlett Nexus already prove the "JRPG don’t sell well on xbox " arguments wrong anyway.
I feel like the next gen xbox gets all three games in one package or something, not unlike Persona.
We should just let it go. Even if FF7R is coming after years and years (let’s say in the next 5 years), I just see no point in it.
Square Enix made a brain dead decision that denied the reality of the market and unless Sony buys them, their decision was very short-sighted.
Its going to be bad for those games not being on PC day 1 as well. SE ultimately will regret it
Really REALLY hope FF9 Remake doesn’t go the same route.
I think it will, I think any mainline entry will be locked down to Sony and all the spinoffs can go elsewhere. Especially if it’s a remake of the same quality of FF7R, Sony will want to lock that down.
I also never expect to see FF16 on anything but PlayStation and PC.
The only saving grace for SE is that there is no other game like FF on the market.
I have to say this only “this amount of player has bought…” is nonesense. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 sold above 2 mil on one platform. No matter how you see it these JRPGs are a big niche genre. Still not bad selling games. 5 mil or more is a lot. in comparison res 7 sold a bit more as a multiplat in a similar timeframe. 5 mil on one platform IS a succses bare in mind the money sony gives as well.
Didn’t FF15 sell above 10 millions copies? A game like FF15 managing that many copies sold with the, as far as I remember, bad reception it got (I actually really enjoyed it myself) tells all since FF7, being the most popular FF ever, should have sold even more copies. It’s not about breaking even or making a bit of profit; for those companies it’s all about maximizing your investment.
I do have a PS5 so I could play these games but Square Enix just doesn’t do it for me anymore.
Nothing ever seems to live up to their expectations, they have botched the success of games by squeezing them into live services, they make bizarre exclusivity deals and they can get bent with the talk of NFT’s.
Yeah, after 6 years, Xbox versions and a multiplayer mode added. Sold better the FFVIIR aligned.
But how does this benefit anyone other than Microsoft? If you’re Sony, you don’t want people hanging on thinking it might come to Xbox eventually - you want them to know it’s exclusive and buy a PS5. The silence from Sony and Square Enix is so weird. Feels like they’re just abiding by some unquestioned business convention that you don’t talk openly about backroom deals.
And more so this gen due to xbox doing better.
Also its funny SE never came out and said fff7 R underperformed when they do it for their western devs.
I just don’t understand the markeing logic behind this deal for either SONY or SE,
For SONY, they have paid a sizable but not gigantic amount to what?
- Retain alignment and marketing dominance on the IP, of which they already had, okaay that makes sense.
- To retain the franchise for the same 7 to 10 million-ish users they’ve had since the 90’s, very few are now going to go out and buy PS5’s for 7R rebirth after the announcement. Those potential 7 - 10 mill were early adopters that have already bought the console in anticipation.
For SE it makes even less sense - Limit any potential growth to your franchise, playstation audience for FF has clearly stagnated based on sales figures from FF7 - FF9 (7 to 12 mill) to FF15 and 7R (7 to 12 mill) - take exclusivity deal that limits sales to that exact audience for the forseable future.
Like I get making deals that benefit both companies, improve influence on platform and grow install base (or attempt to) and have development costs / marketing handled or paid for. I don’t particually think SONY or SE are getting much benefit from either of these things. that they didn’t already have in some capacity.
I don’t care what any internet personality or corperate personal says bout 7R.
It absolutely did not meet expectations.
Think about it, the hotly anticipated remake of SE’s most successful game did not at least match sales figures of the orginal nor the hated step children (ff8 and ff10) 20 years later, in a bigger industry, on the internets second coming of christ console. Also FF7R would have cost quite abit more than those games did so the profit margins would clearly be less per copy sold and require more.
Finally, lest we forget this is the same company that openly admitted it was dissappointed with the sales of the TR reboot way back in 2013 (i think), that game sold around 6 - 8 mill at the time but would have cost less to make being a generation prior.
Does it benefit MS ? I see more Xbox fans frustrated and angry as hell at the lack of any information rather than them being benefited from the lack of info.
I don’t think it benefits anyone.
