I’m tempted by deliver at all costs
As someone who liked FFVII but never thought it anywhere near as good as some seem to (genuinely think the story is meh), Remake has struck me as a fantastic example of nostalgia+bloat+exclusivity = hypetrain. From what I have seen and played (snippets via a friend) it’s got a lot to offer, but also so much… pointless bloat.
Yep I bounced hard off the Remake on PS4, I’d had the bike race and subsequent battle which were fun, then had a boring as hell bit in the slums and doing some flower picking or something stupid.
The pacing was just all over the place and I agree about the characters, and the graphics in places were good but at times I felt it was a step back from FF15 which had been rendering an open world.
I really loved 15 but Remake (and to some extent 16) have highlighted the games are a little too predictable and poorly paced to keep my attention when so many fantastic games are available instead.
I plan to do the same at some point, pick Remake and Rebirth up on PC and force myself through them to see if Rebirth lives up to the hype, plus force myself to finish 16 - but the problem is when there’s so many better games out there it will take all my willpower to do so lol…
I’ve never played the original, but my niece loves it and I watched her play a few hours. If Square had released the new ones within a few months on Xbox I’d probably have bought them and have in my backlog but at this point I’m not all that interested. If they release them in one package with a very discounted price maybe. I’ve got the pixel remasters and the original games already that I haven’t played so adding a third set is probably not a great move for me. The closest I’ve come to finishing a Final Fantasy game is playing about half of maybe FF3 or I forget which one, on my windows phone.
At this point, I think it’s my specialty as well! Lol
Thanks for your in-depth thoughts. I played remake before I had ever played Crisis Core or the original version of VII, so I didn’t pick up on all the narrative issues at the time. But I 100% agree on all other points.
I probably enjoyed my playthrough more than you did - but I almost bounced off it a couple of times due to the horrible pacing issues. That section in the slums was particularly awful.
I distinctly remember thinking at the time that the main characters all looked amazing and the rest of the game looked like crap. That may have been the first time I noticed that combination, but I have subsequently seen it in quite a few other Japanese games. Apparently, that is a tradeoff lots of devs (and players) don’t mind.
A 6.0/10? Holy crap. I can understand being disappointed with Remake and while I dropped the original FF VII literally 10 minutes into the game as I ran up the train steps right in the beginning, got into four random battles, turned off the system, took out the disc, put it back in the case and handed it back to my friend of now 32 years and said, go get your money back as he bought for me as a Birthday present as he wanted me to play the game so badly even though I barely had any interest in it. True story by the way.
Anyway, I really liked and enjoyed Remake (8.5/10) for the most part. I do agree about the Whispers as I didn’t like that aspect at all and the story itself is the weakest aspect of the game which isn’t a surprise since they did split one game into three parts/episodes. The soundtrack was excellent as was the voice acting and sound effects. Visually, it looked great on PS4 Pro but does look better on PS5 and im sure PC as well. The combat/gameplay though is the game’s best aspect in my opinion because it makes it all real time with a slow down/pause mechanic to replace the traditional turn based system which was great for me because if it was still turn based, I would have skipped the remake just like I did the original. lol
Rebirth (9.0/10 for me) is definitely better than Remake overall. The biggest negative I had with Rebirth was the side content being decent. You should definitely stick with the original bud.
Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey - Legacy of the First Blade (DLC) +0.5
This was a solid expansion, with a good story and lots of new quests, gear and a few new abilities (even though I had access to the latter in the main game from the start). No new map for this, as it takes place all over Greece but it’s big enough that it felt natural. Really amazing how big this map feels, I reflected a lot on that as I returned to the game. It feels alive, it’s huge and there’s so much going on at all times both on land and at sea. Epic!
I really like how they made this into something very personal for (in my case) Kassandra, and how they made it work in the world. Lots of new characters to love and hate, really enjoyed it despite the tropes and occasional cheese.
Recommended!
Now on to the next expansion, which looks a lot more fantastical in nature…
I enjoyed Legacy of the First Blade but Fate of Atlantis is on another level in my opinion. If you’re playing on hard difficulty or higher, make sure you’re leveled up and whatnot. Hehe.
Yeah I play on one step above normal, I’m level 65 and all my gear is up to date. Being a hamster has its perks… I loot so much lol. I have three good sets, always keeping the Warrior and Assassin ones maxed out. I prefer the stealth approach when possible, really satisfying dismantling enemy outposts without ever even being seen. But need to keep the Warrior stuff leveled up as well for the inevitable combat scenarios. I’m closing in on 200h so I’m pretty good at it at this point, hehe.
The first encounter in Fate of Atlantis was a pain in the neck for me if it’s what I’m remembering, but yeah the DLC for that game were awesome
Awesome!! I still want to replay Odyssey at some point but after I replay Origins. lol
When you get going in Fate of Atlantis, let me know how you like it bud.
Same here and agreed.

-1 Asteroids Recharged
With father’s day coming up, I have been thinking about mine and his stories about going to the arcade to play Asteroids. I realized that I hadn’t played an asteroids game since the game room one. And like it was fate, this version went on sale this week!
-1 Paper Ghost Stories Third Eye Open
I enjoyed the prequel Paper Ghost Stories 7 pm, so I have been waiting for this to go on sale, which it did.
Forgot to report these last weekend; they were birthday gifts from my wife
Happy belated birthday!
Thank ye kindly, good sir
