XboxEra's 2024 Backlog Challenge |OT| Surely this is the year?

+1 Outbreak Fedora Files: What Lydia Knows

I have a feeling some may be interested in what exactly this game is. I’d to start from the beginning… Dead Drop Studios is a true indie studio consisting of only three full time employees. They started by making the original Outbreak game, which was the result of the question, “What would a Resident Evil game look like if it had released on Super Nintendo?”. Since then, they continued releasing new installments of the Outbreak series as PS era 3D survival horror games using Unity.

However, the pandemic and the recent industry crisis has put a toll on the small studio. So in order to keep afloat, they have taken drastic measures, from running crowd funding campaigns to finance their next big projects, switching to UE5, and creating spinoff games like Dinobreak (spiritual successor to Dino Crisis), Railbreak (an on rails shooter), and Fedora Files, a three part visual novel series.

The first of such releases is What Lydia Knows. It stars the titular Lydia, a detective in Cypress Ridge in the late 90s. The game centers around the case of bodies being found in the same place around the same time each year for the past five years. For some reason, the records for which have been hidden so as to not arouse suspicion. The lead detective is sent to investigate the latest occurance and has gone missing. So it’s up to you, as Lydia, to find your superior and discover the true story of the bodies.

The game acts as a “before the Outbreak” prequel that directly leads into their next game, Outbreak Shades of Horror: Chromatic Split, which releases Friday. It’s meant to tell the story of how the Outbreak came about and the people involved in it’s making. Chromatic Split picks up right after the Outbreak begins, with you in the shoes of Lydia once again.

I have tried to support these devs through their crowd funding campaigns, buying their back catalog, and watching their weekly twitch streams, which has won me copies of their last four games, including What Lydia Knows and a couple Switch copies of games, completely free, just for watching their streams.

That’s definitely an interesting premise, and cool to support small devs too

I’ve had that bundle in my wish list forever now but never had anyone I know play them to give me a proper review, so thanks

I am going to be honest… The older games are pretty rough. If you are a fan of classic survival horror games like Resident Evil, you may not mind the graphics, camera, or controls. Or if you are interested in seeing the progression of game design from one to another, it may be worth it.

Otherwise, I would stick with the latest releases for a more modern experience. Basically, all the UE5 games. Dinobreak, Railbreak, What Lydia Knows, and the upcoming Chromatic Split are all highly recommended. Contagious Memories isn’t too bad if you want to go back that far.

I think a couple of the bundles on Xbox are on sale this week to celebrate the new game release.

Thank you! I was definitely curious haha. Never heard of any of these before, but now they are certainly on my radar. I love mysteries so I’ll put the newer ones on my wish list.

  • +1 - Mega Man X Legacy Collection: Mega Man X3 (XOne) - I memorex’ed 3 for 4, so hadn’t played much of this one growing up but I do remember having the same hell of a time on Sigma’s three stages then, just as I did now. Wasn’t as much of a fan of this one as the next in the series, and it still shows why, as most of the performance issues are still faithfully reproduced

+1 Creepy Tale: Ingrids Penance

The last of the current trilogy of spooky point and click puzzle platformers. This one is a lot long, actually has dialog, and features multiple endings, so it’s a big step up! This one follows the titular Ingrid, the worst child in the world, who is sent to… Hell? Purgatory? Hades? Some bad place and you are trying to escape.

+1 Creepy Tale 2

I couldn’t stand not having the trilogy complete, so I sat a foot away from the TV and memorized the path through the bubbly swamp. For such a short game, my playtime is inflated due to my play time in the swamp. And icing on the cake, the achievement for dying in all parts of the swamp didn’t even unlock, even though I died dozens of times!

I like turn based RPGs, so I wish I knew this game was basically another one. I enjoyed it, although I didn’t really vibe with the Rogue like elements. It leaves game pass in a few days, so at least I got to experience it before it left.

Remember that new Outbreak game I said was releasing today? I happened to get an extra Series X code for it if anyone would like to trade for it…

I also got a Dinobreak code from the discord!

+1 Apocalipsis

The last of my spooky season point and click games on the calendar to play this year… It was very weird and the ending is extremely sad.

It was just something to scratch the itch of Vampire Survivors after I finished it. It’s not as good, but hit the spot regardless

Really enjoyed this. I was a late comer to any Atlus games, but in the last handful of years I have played Persona 5 Royal, Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 3 Remake - and have enjoyed them all. So, I was really looking forward to Metaphor.

The change from the high school focused Persona setting to a more adult fantasy setting was very welcome.

The Archetype (job) system is great and relieved a lot of the frustration of leveling and fusing a hundred different personas (though I must admit there can be an OCD type of fun in that as well).

Gameplay/animation/storytelling was all top tier. I do have a few minor quibbles with how the protagonists interact with the villain - but those are all spoilery so I won’t go into details.

My playthrough clocked in at slightly over 100 hours - but I did spend quite a bit of time grinding and trying to level up archetypes. It turned out I was overleveled for the last dungeon, so none of that was really necessary.

Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys Atlus games or turn-based fantasy rpgs.

So far, this is in my top three games of the year along with Unicorn Overlord and Balatro.

That alone means this will likely be my first Atlus game. I’ve been curious about the Persona games but I just don’t have 100+ hours of high school social drama in me.

Everything I’ve seen and heard about Metaphor sounds great, I’ve put it on my wish list!

Can someone remind me the official end date for the competition - and when our “grace period” for making purchases begins/ends?

I’ll be starting Dragon Age on Thursday. I think I am within a dozen hours or so of finishing Dragon Quest XI. I’d like to finish those and maybe one more before the competition ends.

I also have a handful of games I have been holding off on buying until the grace period.

I’m fully expecting to get passed, but I’ve had a lot of fun.

I do have another game pass completion, A Little to the Left. I think they went a bit far with the daily tidies but overall it was a great game. If you like organizing stuff, check it out.

I played the demo for 11 hrs!

Oh, I don’t know, I think you might pull the win… especially if there are some decent BF sales.

My wife loved A Little to the Left, and I still need to go through that one. Currently juggling 12 or so while my brain decides what will stick
