XboxEra Community Hangout |OT9| Waiting for Developer_E3

Tragic is a stong word…I think that we should accept that a 500e box will not always have performance modes in all games. The game is not DOOM Eternal or DMC5 so it will play fine even if it is 30fps, I do agree that 40fps modes could be a good solution for the more taxing games going forward (if the devs can afford that of course).

It’s not gonna be a deal breaker for me if Starfield were to launch in 30fps only, it will definitely take some time to adjust to it though since it’s first person with optional third person. It’s less jarring in third person. If 30fps only I hope it will be similar to RDR2 and Witcher 3, those are two games I have no issue with playing in 30fps whereas it’s very bad in ACV.

Assuming Jez’s prediction turns out to be true I’m gonna play some BGS games in 30fps a day or two before Starfield comes out, it will definitely help with adjusting.

It’s not a deal breaker for me but i would rather it get delayed until it can get a higher fps mode . 40 like horizon forbidden west.

  • Starfield (2023) — 30 FPS on console, maybe unlocked framerate on PC, or else will be appropriately modded by community to varying degrees of success
  • Starfield Definitive Edition (whenever gen 10 rolls around) — 60 FPS across the board
  • Starfield Anniversary Edition (whenever gen 11 rolls around) — upgrade to Definitive Edition; adds fishing and a couple of community created quests

You know it to be true.

Lol, maybe unlocked on PC? That ain’t how PC works.

As someone who has not done PC gaming in more than 20 years, I have admittedly no idea how PC gaming works, lmao.

Who knows, for all we know they do offer a performance mode. The game looks great, but I don’t see why it couldn’t run at 60fps with less visual fidelity and lower resolution. I guess it depends whether on if BGS had the time for a performance mode or if they just decided against it altogether and went for the best visuals possible for the game.

Todd did say he will go for graphics over framerate, except for a racer. But I can’t imagine that Todd didn’t think to himself “damn this is nice” when he played Skyrim in 60fps back then on PC or Xbox when the Special Edition came out.

It kinda sucks that we have to keep this thing in mind, especially after having had so many 60fps games. Maybe a mid gen refresh can take care of it or we all just need to move to PC, lol. But looking back on it, Todd hasn’t mentioned 60fps in any interviews, has he? He did mention 30fps a few times.

If the CPU is the limitation (which will be for the most ambitious titles going forward) lowering the resolution or the graphical settings may not be enough to have a frame-rate higher than 60fps (which is what is needed for a 60fps cap). As it’s being said already including a 40fps mode will be a nice middle ground solution.

Less visual fidelity and lower resolution implies the game is GPU limited, not CPU limited.

Didn’t The Last of Us 2 release at 30fps? Why would Starfield, which is infinitely more massive and vast potentially being 30fps be construed as negative?

Most experts agree that adults should spend less than two hours per day on their screens for non-work related activities.

I’ve deleted all my social media apps from my phone, set it to greyscale and want to spend less time specifically on Twitter and Reddit. I want to devote my screen time to joyful activities like Steam Deck gaming and single-player Xbox titles.

If you’ve also had the same experience where you can’t stop feeling glued to your screen I’d love to discuss it. This is the XboxERa hangout session after all, I’m sure we’ve all spent more time reading about FTC, acquisitions and rumors than we’d like to admit. Or, maybe some of us have an addiction to Tik Tok, or Facebook, or Instagram.

Let’s discuss :coffee:

Yeah, 40fps would be the sweet spot for sure.

Last of us 2 was PS4 only at launch wasn’t it? Then PS5 got a performance patch to 60.

Yep. And Starfield is current gen only. Its hard to compare to other console games because PS5 doesn’t exactly have a current gen only game on this scale yet. I mean there’s HFW, large locations but no way as big as Starfield likely will have.

And it’s not just stuff like that, it’s the ability to interact with tons of objects and parts of the world, every NPC living their life independently. There are a ton of calculations going on that aren’t happening in a linear narrative game like TLOU.

Yeah it’s hard to tell what is going to happen broadly with framerate, we’re in a bit of a sweet spot right now with most games being cross gen where including a 60fps mode is more viable - but as we push more into current gen only games we could see more and more games revert back to 30.

It released 30 fps on last gen console

Exactly this. Comparing Todd Howard Bethesda games to any other game isn’t realistic because of how different his games are. Plus, we have no idea what limitations the revamped Creation Engine is placing on the game. I would love for the game to be 60fps, so I’m obviously disappointed, but as long as the game is great and I can achieve higher framerates on PC, I’ll be ok.

Well before you’re disappointed, these are just predictions!

That’s true! For now at least.
