My first thought when reading that was “Oh, it’s gonna be a game about ice cubes melting at different speeds depending on how close together they are.”
Maybe it will be a horror game that subjugates your phone and does things like call you in the middle of the night.
Obviously if DontNod where to announce something I’m sure it would come to Xbox, but as for Japanese games it’s nothing right now. Officially the next DQ doesn’t have platforms announced, right?
The next games to be released will be Infinity Strash, the HD-2D remake of the third chapter and then XII. Infinity Strash is already confirmed to be releasing everywhere except Xbox, so I don’t hold out much hope for the others.
Earlier this year SE tweeted out something about their relationship with Xbox and I’m like…dude, what the fuck kind of relationship is this even? I can’t imagine Xbox not being interested in those games, it’s just SE being SE at this point. Let’s hope they don’t pull this bullshit for the next DQ.
There will be Japanese Square games on Xbox in 2023. Will it be ones people want? I don’t know. The only Square game in 2023 I care about is Octopath II.
There’s troves of JRPG devs/publishers I’d rather see on Xbox before Square Enix though. Need NIS, Falcom, and Gust and then I am personally satisfied with the JRPG output on Xbox, provided their releases stay consistent and also Atlus stays on board too.
Speaking of Gust, I didn’t think Atelier was having this much hype behind it in Japan. Atelier Ryza 3 is in Famitsu’s top 10 most anticipated games.
I just love this shit, it’s hilarious to me. This exactly is the same sort of humour the game pass team goes for on twitter so this fits so well for them haha. omg the screaming
Square Enix released 5 games on Xbox this year with most of them having been announced this year. While they seem to be pulling away from Xbox it’s perfectly reasonable to assume we’ll probably still see some games next year too.
Most of what, like 99% of what they are releasing for 2023 has been announced due to covid delays. Forspoken, FF7 Rebirth, FF16, Pixel Remasters, Octopath Traveller 2, Infinity Stash. Projects big and large have not been announced for the platform. I don’t think they are suddenly going to announce any projects that include Xbox given the developmental timelines
In 2022 they released 18 games in total with 3 having been announced and released this year for Xbox (and 2 having been announced the year prior), for 2023 they currently have 7 titles confirmed for release (plus the pixel remaster ports). I think it’s entirely reasonable they could announce more games and that some could come to Xbox, at the very least it’s not something I’d dismiss as “peak copium”.
Going by the wikipedia of Square Enix released titles for the past decade (this does include some small stuff like long term re-releases, but doesn’t include general ports)- they have an average of just over 11 titles per year ranging from 4 games in 2020 (the only time in the past decade they’ve released less than 8 titles in one year) to a very impressive 16 titles in 2017 and 14 titles in 2014.
This doesn’t even include any games from Square Enix West (which is awkward given that while they have sold the internal teams, Square Enix West has externally developed titles that still fall under Square Enix - so actually the average would be even higher). So according to the numbers it seems relatively normal regardless of covid. My point still stands
