i have to agree with this. granted, i didn’t play it and only watched it on you stream the first 2 chapters. graphics really stand out. but the melee combat looked awful, there is no good option for crowd control. if more than one enemy is there you lose every control of the battle flow. the camera is so damn near the character it often obfuscates the enemies.
I saw other content creators comment on the fact they hadn’t gotten a code for this so couldn’t review it for launch, I don’t think it’s just Xboxera specifically that got left out on this one
A subtle thing, but on promotional material, Xbox and Game Pass are listed first before PS. Possibly a MS marketing deal here, though I don’t think it’s gonna be on Persona’s scale.
The combat isn’t terrible. The shooting is solid and the melee combat is good. It’s the horrible dodging mechanic that makes the combat appear terrible when it’s not. Camera though doesn’t help. If the dodging didn’t exist, it’s a straight forward melee combat game that isn’t bad at all. To each their own though.
Visuals are one aspect out of a few in my graphics category. Also includes character models, animations, atmosphere and immersion. Maybe these things don’t matter to you but they do matter to me. As of right now, eight hours in, this is how im rating the game -
Graphics - 10/10, Audio - 8.5/10, Gameplay - 7.0/10, Story/Characters - 5 or a 6. Not sure yet. Will wait until I complete the game. The first two categories definitely carry the game. When the dodging works, the combat is fun and enjoyable. It’s just that the dodging mechanic itself is bad. Would have preferred no dodging mechanic at all.
Either way, im into survival horror games and this being a new IP, I was always going to play it. Hoping this game becomes a franchise and I definitely want a sequel. Combat just needs a better defensive mechanic and more depth to the melee attacks. Give me this an it’s an improvement. If anything, story and characters need more work than the combat/gameplay does in my opinion.
To each their own though Mort.
This I disagree with because when it comes to survival horror, even if the combat/gameplay was excellent, it’s all about the atmosphere, tension and immersion the game gives you while playing. If a survival horror game doesn’t have this to begin with, the rest won’t matter at all no matter how great it is.
“The main mechanic of the combat only ‘appears’ to make it terrible”. There is no crowd control, and dodging is all you can do, and it does not work with more than one enemy.
The dodging is not the main mechanic of the game. The melee combat is the main mechanic of the game. I’ll give you the crowd control issue but even without a dodge in the game, this issue would still exist due to the camera. I’m overall enjoying the game and will complete it.
If you’re not enjoying the game or whatever, drop it. No one is forcing you to complete the game Jesse. I have dropped a few games this year because I wasn’t enjoying them. Nothing wrong with dropping a game if you’re not liking and enjoying it.
Graphics are the main factor for people when reviewing games. I look at games like uncharted and ghosts of Tsuima both of which have pretty mediocre gameplay but are both really pretty with good stories.
A part of me thinks that because Jez was expecting this game to have great critical reception before its release, he has to justify liking this game in some way or another. Also, his anti-EA stance may not let him acknowledge the Dead Space remake possibly being better than Callisto.
