XboxEra Community Hangout |OT6| New Year, Same Three Topics

I was expecting a catchy jingle to auto-play when I read “They can do it all!”…

I mean Xbox had Cuphead, Outer Wilds, and Death’s Door… It doesn’t get better than those :philwins:

Wait till Starfield blots out the sun. Its alllllllllll everyones gonna be talking about

I really hope so, I think it could be the big push Xbox needs because if that is big then they have a huge 2023 which it seems like they could, that could be the big shift of Xbox having great games even though they just launched like 3 games last year with 80+ meta and one of them hitting the highest of the year… I think they need multiple years of big games before it really takes off.

Yeah they almost had to start over now, at least here in Europe. However Xbox kind of need the attitude of OG Xbox again too…

I get that MS has things to do when we talk about marketing and localization. Thankfully the new “Microsoft gaming” will help them improve over time, but what I don’t get is why MS should copy what SONY is doing. So lets get point by point:

  1. Movies and television

Why should MS care about this when it’s pretty obvious they have cero interest in this business. Phil himself has stated that they had no interest in turning their IPs into movies due to low ROI. Also, its not like Playsation movies had a great starting point with that mediocre Uncharted movie

  2. Live Services games.

The way Jeff is phrasing it made it sound like SONY is doing something completely unheard in the industry. SONY is doing 10 live services games and singleplayer games!!! (like xbox?)I mean, it’s cool to see SONY doing something different…but has he forgotten how badly managed all of Playstation multiplayer projects turned out to be? The most recent example being Destruction all stars and Xbox is going to have two of the most played videogames in history with Minecraft and COD sooooo…I reckon is SONY the one who has to learn from MS

  3. Subscription services

Sure, we still need to see their gamepass competitor but all signs point it to be a psnow rebrand…if you consider that a gamepass competitor with all that ecosystem entails (PC, moviles, TV, cloud, console…etc) then I don’t know what to tell you.

Don’t know if the end of the article is to compare the strength and weaknesses of both companies but it just feels like he’s putting SONY in this weird pinnacle in the gaming industry that not even Nintendo could reach.

Nintendo have an iron wall that can’t be dented no matter what. Sony have a wall that can break, but it will take a lot of attempts to do. Microsoft is building one and so far it’s looking pretty good. Can it be fortified? Time will tell.

Basically, Nintendo is very difficult to crack because of fan base being extremely loyal. Sony is similar, only some fans may give a chance to listen on other’s offering. It’s an uphill battle for Xbox, but they’re making good progress. I believe they will climb higher with many new moves that practically take itself serious instead of a fun little project. I can understand where the article was coming from. If anything, once Xbox progress above it, it will look good on them.

We’re going live Friday night, tentatively set for 7pm. They just announced a Halo Waypoint blog post going up Friday so we’re pushing it back a day to talk about it. Drop any questions for us at

Get FIFA marketing that’ll help it, market the Xbox at all the football matches, shit like that. Not sure what else would help there marketing wise and game but they obviously need localisation too.

The best point that is made is about the localization. It’s painfully true. Xbox desperately needs to get better at it. Idk why they’re so far behind at it.

Yeah. The fact that studios owned by Xbox are responsible for 40% of the top 10 most awarded games of last year (the most of anyone) really ought to have had a bigger impact on the narrative than it has. Yes, the impact is dulled by one of those games ironically being a timed PS5 exclusive, and one being multiplatform, but the whole “Xbox has no games” narrative is blatantly false. I’m looking forward to a time when that ridiculous notion is actually considered ridiculous.

I think the TV-route is a good idea, let’s see how Halo pans out.

Spartacus doesn’t have to actually be better or even equal to be considered superior, it’s PlayStation. They have, as we can see, so much clout it’s ridiculous.

The rest of your post I agree with!

Guerilla makes a banger game for Playstation so now we have to suffer through hot takes about how Sony runs a magical business that had it all and no one can compete with and they do no wrong. The prospect of praising individual things but still be critical of others doesn’t exist, apparently. It has to either be all good or doomed.

They can do it all!

Since they can do it all, there is absolutely no need for them to have COD or any Activision products.

I think what they mean by Sony-level focus is the amount of detail and time they focus on games.

As many people have said, Sony blows Microsoft out of the water when it comes to marketing.

In very very simplified terms, Sony’s games (first-party) basically use the same general structure of being a third-person action-adventure game. In the past 5 years, they’ve released 10 of these games and besides one or two of them, they’ve been incredibly well-received by critics and consumers alike.

These “blockbuster” titles, while usually bringing not a lot of innovation to the industry are massive. What I’m trying to get at is that “Sony-level focus” is not worrying about the games because they had been so far ahead of Xbox over the past few years. While this seems to be changing rapidly, Xbox still needs to catch up to them.
