XboxEra Community Hangout |OT14| New News? NEW THREAD

Nintendo & Game freak should either double down on Pokémon being a smaller scope AA game priced at $40 (or $50 probably with the current market) or properly investment in building a quality game. Their insistence on charging as much as far far bigger games that have way higher dev costs while still holding onto the same Gameboy low quality practices and now trying to legally monopolize their hold over the genre, well I don’t like it to say the least :face_exhaling:.

For people not as plugged in to PC gaming especially, I think it’s fair to ask initially what this is exactly, does it play Xbox console games or what. But by now the question has been answered and it should be pretty clear to anyone what this device is and what it’s not. At some point it’s not in good faith anymore.

I don’t really have a dog in the fight because neither PC gaming nor portable gaming interest me. But it has been amusing to see the disconnect between the actual reviews, which are largely positive, and the comments/message board reactions trying to push a disaster narrative.

Thanks for posting these. I loved the original and was able to get the 106% complete. Not because I’m good at it, but b/c it made being persistent fun. Hoping this captures that magic.

I also wanted to comment on the videos themselves. This forum and the discord have been discussing video game coverage a lot lately. The good and bad. The possible biases and negative engagement. These two videos are a great example of how game media coverage works.

The Gamespot video mostly discusses what this game ‘isn’t’. And rarely discusses what it is. So to me came off as very negative. And for no particular reason. I mean, its a preview. On top of this, he comes off as unprepared. Throw the guy who just played a couple levels of this game in front of the camera and call it good. Spit out some negative hot takes and watch the comment section go wild.

The ign video is the complete opposite. Well written, well thought out, and well edited. Packed with information on what this game is. The ign video comes across as being made by a professional.

The Gamespot video is amateur hour. Resembles an amateur youtube video by someone just starting out and learning the ropes. It blows my mind, whoever made the call to post this video thought this is great and represents Gamespot quality.

Maybe it’s because I watched these back to back so the differences where very apparent. Two thumbs up on the ign preview video.

Yeah IGN can be pretty okay at times with their videos, other times they completely miss the mark.

As for this game, after the new game was announced I decided to give the original game a shot but I think it’s the first boss where after a few deaths I just gave up. No checkpoints whatsoever, and i get it, checkpoints would ruin the challenge but it’s the kind of challenge that isn’t for me any longer.

The more i play games the more I’m starting to think I might never really touch a Souls game or similar game to it again. I do have Elden Ring here, still in its seal from earlier this year when I bought it for a good price, but I just don’t feel like taking on that challenge.

But never say never, of course. I would not mind if the new Super Meat Boy is more forgiving. Or has a easier mode or options to make it more forgiving. A demo would be ideal.

Basic rule of internet that I really should get over, but can’t: people don’t often stop to think, set their thoughts in context, and ask themselves what they’re actually on about.

I have never played a souls game. Basically b/c I don’t love boss fights. I deal with them in games, but my understanding of the souls games is that is the highlight of them.

In super meat boy, you look at a level and think there is no way my hands can do this. Then 30 tries later you do it and that feels good. The important thing here is those 30 tries takes about 5 minutes b/c the levels are so short and the restart time is so quick. But then to your point about chase sequences, I do kind of like those vs straight up boss fights. At any rate, I don’t think there are that many of those chases if you can push through the one you are on, it will open up more standard levels to try.

Man, some tech channels are really going all in on the negativity for the Xbox Ally X/S(Youtube recommendations, I have been clicking not interested on all of them), a lot of them have even just installed Linux Bizzaite(is that how it’s spelled) on them. Like, I get the whole this isn’t an Xbox sentiment, but for me this device will always be a handheld PC because the OS is still a PC OS trying to hide the issues, not because it doesn’t play all Xbox games.

Because the next Xbox not playing all Xbox games has always been a thing, but those consoles didn’t force the PC experience(even if partially) on me as part of the package.

Where were they for TVs being called Xbox?

I don’t know Youtube wasn’t recommending them to me, I was here saying it’s a good streaming alternative but I want to be able to download and play my games, which if the TV’s could do that. They would count for me, as I don’t think they force any of the PC experience on us, just pretty bad UIs imo.

I’d imagine it’d be possible to fit the internals of something like the Xbox Ally inside a TV or maybe even a Series S, but it’d make much more expensive and I wonder how big the market is for something like that, especially since TVs usually outlive game consoles. Cloud though will still work in 10-15 years on that same TV but the datacenter equipment will be upgraded.

It could work, similar to how we think Microsoft is going to work with OEMs they produce a chip and the OEMs make their own hardware with it. The main issue is going to be getting TV manufactures to adopt whatever Windows ends up being as their default UI, especially since they don’t have to pay for their current stuff.

As for cloud gaming/streaming, my experience with the current Xbox offering shows that it can work great or it cannot, but beyond trying a game to see how it runs(very different for multiple games with input delay varying by game as well - sometimes native, sometimes not). It’s definitely going to be big, but for me it will always be more like a try this game to see if I enjoy it and hope it doesn’t run really bad, because my internet connection isn’t exactly the best at 100mbps.

I saw a LOT of negativity for cloud gaming in general. Non Xbox gamers act like ANYTHING Xbox does to expand its audience means they’re abandoning console and some gamers really fall for the nonsense and feel threatened at all these moves. There was a lot of anger at the "no console required " I get the “this is an Xbox” campaign discontent because Xbox hadn’t put in the work unify it’s ecosystem. Like we didn’t have owned cloud games and cloud gaming wasn’t out of beta and it wasn’t on the cheaper $10 GP tier. But I also really don’t get people being angry about having MORE freedom with their library. For me Xbox is reviving and fulfilling childhood dreams. Heck, I made my mom buy a Sony TV just to use PS Now ($20 a month really bad PS Now). The experience was awful and I was still blown away by the proof of concept. These people act like they really want all their games locked to a single hardware device. Okay. Like I want to bonk them on their heads. Not liking it is one thing, but actively attacking Xbox for being less of a walled garden and adding more value to game libraries and having a wider ecosystem that includes devices everyone already owns (like you can cloud game on your smartphone or use remote play on your smartphone) is ridiculous.

I feel like we can’t be that far off from pretty much any flagship device being able to play most One generation and older games and especially indies natively. iPhones are already showing this off. And if people are spending multiples of thousands on those Quantum Ultraman Super duper TVs, then sure, why not? Throw them a bone.

For cloud, I really want Xbox to introduce a hybrid approach that works kinda like Ms Flight Simulator where you download the foundation of the game or the bare minimum and then stream the textures or assets or whatever they’d be called. That’d make the streaming load less and mean you’re already controlling a natively downloaded game at base. That’d make for a cool Cloud Xbox and they could probably get away with it at $200 or maybe $300 depending on where next Gen is priced. Especially if it can fully download and play like Xbox One games and older.

I don’t know where to vent but f this guy. He def knew what he was doing and of course he knew the media and fans will pick up on it. If you’re going to post something like, then you hav to Be 100% because they’re ruining the livelihood of developers and others involved in production. Fans will most likely run with his misinterpreted “rumour “ and it will ruin the discourse around the game.

AI is a sensitive topic among gamers and im no expert but there’s been some form of AI used in gaming for decades . If you’re going to start the rumour then you should be able to describe how it’s used rather than backtrack after you started the fire

The completely lack of consequences from Xbox especially makes it so that there’s no real need to put thought into making these “reports”. If they’re wrong, why should they care? They still get the clicks. In fact they get more clicks. It’s disgusting and a big issue in the industry (especially for Xbox), but it won’t stop until they’re held accountable by Microsoft and consumers and the industry at large. As is the internet incentivize an utter lack of investigation and proper weight given to what is said.

Imagine reaching out to sources for how it’s being used AFTER putting the news out there… Like you said they 100% knew what they were doing.

Of course certain other places have fully ran with the story as it’s another dream thread for certain forums. Even if AI was actually being used in a way that actually helps devs, i don’t imagine it’d stop them dunking on Xbox/Halo.

On the subject, I wonder how many devs are using AI during development after all it’s not something they technically need to disclose. Would be interesting if one of their favourite devs was using AI in a similar way, whether they’d be so quick to say they’re gonna boycott, avoid their game
