It is utterly fascinating to me at this stage how the wave of what’s being called AI is developing financially and with both business users and commercial end users. I’m at the point where I’m trying to separate the business marketing culture bit and the reality bit. Because it feels like one major aspect of “AI” is as a smokescreen to be a “promise” that kicks the late stage capitalism we’re all experiencing down the road and let’s executives and shareholders pretend everything is peachy. And then there’s the real world uses and effects this wave of “AI” is having on the job market and also in how we interact with technology (and everything) and how developers and software engineers build new content. Pandora’s box feels like a bit of an understatement. There’s so much going on socially, financially, environmentally, and technologically.
But it still doesn’t feel wholly “new” to me. Like part of complexity does feel like there’s a bit of digging up an old buzz word and dusting it off here. And then there’s also the reality that a lot of what this new wave of AI is pushed as being capable was already capable with existing technology. I’m not incredibly optimistic about what the future has in store, but I am certainly interested.
