The other day I saw a tweet I replied to. Basically it said Rockstar can take all the time they need for 6, delay if you have to because we’ll get a masterpiece. I replied that I rather see them making some smaller (budget wise probably too) games so that we have more than just ONE actual new game from them in a console generation. I miss the PS360 era so much, and some say that the scope of these games have increased so much that it just isn’t possible.
But it is, it will just be smaller games. Bully 2 for example, make it the same scope as the first one, doesn’t need to be twice the size. The same with a game like Max Payne, I miss these. Thankfully 1 and 2 are getting remakes, so there’s that. But imagine how many years later after GTA 6 that we might see RDR3 (or something else) and we’ll be elderly people once GTA 7 comes out.
I have the same with TES, I can’t deny it’s a tad bit depressing how long the wait is, lol. It’s a bummer because I really an article a few years ago where Strauss Zelnick from Take Two said he wanted Rockstar to release more games in a console generation, so that would mean GTA being smaller than we’re used to or something. But that definitely didn’t pan out.
Yeah to be fair Rockstar are an outlier even for this industry - they made so much money from GTA Online it hasn’t really been in their interest to hurry the next GTA (and risk it not being well received).
They were one of my favourite developers many years ago, but it feels like Zelnick has presided over their destruction as an innovative and quality studio (or studios).
It feels instead like the devs are either chained to the GTA Online mines, or are piled into making GTA6 (some of it the huge world, but I imagine a lot of it for the monetisation especially Online) - there doesn’t seem to be any small projects at all as they don’t make him the money GTA does…
The price hike has actually hurt them as it sold barely over 10,000. It dropped around 2,500 from last time. They used to sell at least 30,000 per week. Announcing Switch 2 right now could actually KO PS5 Japan market.
They don’t have that property as of now. I understand the “freedom” of creativity, but did they have to say it like that about the sequel. Could have been like “Hi-Fi 2 would be great to see, but we prefer if Tango work on other creative choice.”
