Plus the game might have difficulty settings but yeah so far the inspiration looks like it’s taken mainly from the style of the Souls style combat system (slow pace, stamina management, big emphasis on dodging e.t.c.).
No Rest For The Wicked looks really great to me, definitely playing this when version 1.0 launches.
I love character action games but sadly they are a niche genre right now, Souls-like games are the hot thing for the last few years so it makes sense that developers will go for that style of combat/design instead of a Ninja Gaiden style game. Being a Souls-like automatically gives you bigger exposure and it’s easier to market your game and developers want that.
The days that a lot of cool looking character action games were released/announced is long gone. At least we have timeless classics like NGB and NGII playable via BC on Xbox, which is infinitely better than having those games stuck on old hardware.
The only game to nail the “souls like” outside of the ones made by FROM is Lies of P. I guess I don’t get burned out from Souls likes because I don’t play every one that comes out. Elden Ring is game of gen as far as I am concerned. I would love more character action games though and hopefully DMC makes a return eventually and Tecmo remembers they own Ninja Gaiden and makes a new one.
Would love Xbox to to team up with Tecmo again to bring out a new NG for xbox but MS as of late aren’t into fansevice-y things like bringing back a fan favorite classic like that.
No this is normal, they do a new release that you can buy every few years and keep. But the subscription version is definitely the main focus that gets a lot more updates.
I’d love to see a new great NG game but I don’t think TN has it in them anymore to do the series justice, I dunno maybe they are afraid to touch the franchise…and considering how bad NG3 was by Hayashi rightfully so.
Just watch the recent previews of Rise of the Ronin and then go watch NGII’s gameplay, the flow of the combat in Ronin looks so much worse and NGII is a fuckin’ 2008 game…animations looks way more clunky too.
At this point I accepted that the Itagaki era Team Ninja is long gone, today’s Team Ninja is stuck with pretty much Nioh’s design at this point and just change little bits here and there. Itagaki era TN were innovators in the action genre that actually tried to push the genre forward now they are B class imitators. We still don’t have any other character action game as good as an all around game as Black and what I mean by that is the game is doing a lot of things excellent that the vast majority of games (even the best ones) in the genre lack (level design for starters, difficulty curve/harder difficulty settings are unique e.t.c.). There’s a reason the game is still considered the best in the genre by many fans.
Hotline Miami is 2 euros now. That is a good price. And the sequel is 2,24 euros.
As for Sand Land. I have been driving around a lot, and I honestly have no idea what there is to do except for fighting baddies, discovering some small cave openings with resources and…that’s it? It’s quite empty, is there no objective?
Totally agree. Really wished Itagaki had gotten a chance to push that genre forward. I’m just not into souls. It’s amazing to date in my opinion no game in this genre has come close to the greatness of Ninja Gaiden black. From
I get why they do it I just don’t vibe with it. I think souls are more fitting for those From Software games. I liked Ori gameplay it was perfect for it especially in Ori and the will of the wisps.
Would love to see Itagaki get another chance to produce something like NGB again.
I just saw an article about Team Ninja should go back to their roots after Ronin since the previews are hit and miss. Well, we’ll see after the release, but good or not, I do wish to see them go back to Ninja Gaiden style.
I know I said I won’t bring up other site here again but I do want to comment one thing. I stumbled a post that reads about Sony Leadership feels Bungie investment was a failure and it’s from that site. However, rather than leave it as a headline, it included “Take it with a pinch of salt.” With Xbox, infinite truth. Sony, unless it’s good, completely false.
Unfortunately, I don’t think they can. The team Ninja led by Tomonobu Itagaki that did the DOA and Ninja Gaiden 1,2 & Black have all left and Hayashi’s team is just not close. Itagaki was like Hideo Kojima for Tecmo both were geniuses and driven off by their bosses. Only thing is Itagaki has not been so fortunate. The game he worked on after departing was a game that saw dev hell being passed from publisher to publisher and was just bad when it released since then it seems he went to Italy and recently surfaced again.
