I can’t say for sure, but games from this console like Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye 007, Banjo-Kazooie, literally made and defined whole genres and set design principles still used to this day.
“The issue that I see is an issue that all of the industry should be cognizant of, which is the risk of console exclusives when you have a principal-agent problem,” he says.
“When you’re the publisher relying on first party for success, you’re always at a disadvantage, because your individual title matters less to the platform holder than it does to you.”
I swear those are almost word-for-word what has been said about it on here, I said something like that like a week ago. But we’re just salty Xbots who don’t know anything
Goldeneye and PD were great fun with friends
But having already experienced stuff like MGS1 before ever playing 64 titles, the single player stuff at least, it all felt like a step down so I was happy with the PS1
Yep, we’ve been saying it for years
These deals are nothing for Sony, they aren’t at any risk, they pay for the marketing cost and some excusive money, worst case scenario they get a forspoken but so what, all they lose is some money
Meanwhile Square/the publisher are setting themselves up for failure in the long term and stupidly relying on one platform while they could be bringing it to everything and then getting things like GP deals on top of that
Yeah, the sooner SE steps away from those deals the better. Just start announcing all the big and smaller games for Xbox that we’ve been missing out on, please. They probably won’t sell like hotcakes, but every bit helps, and perhaps Game Pass can give the games a second life.
They will have every major game coming (that hasn’t been locked down, prob just FF7R series I guess) for sure.
I don’t think smaller titles will completely stop skipping though, the situation will just get better. All of the JP publishers skip Xbox on at least a small few smaller games, Square just did it by far the most often. I’d say HD2D skips won’t happen anymore with OT2 being the game they made sure to feature, I guess.
Majora’s Mask, it was imo a vast improvement over Ocarina.
It gave characters a schedule, allowed us to play as 4 out of 5 races with their own unique gameplay, it gave so many characters stories to flesh them out. Expanded on the time aspects of Ocarina by allowing us to skip ahead to the next day or restart from the beginning or slow down the speed of the clock or speed it up.
FF probably needs to come back to Nintendo more than anything. Hopefully the next Switch can better support downscaled versions of AAA games.
Anyone saying FF shouldn’t bother coming to Xbox isn’t thinking this through all of the way. What else do you expect from fanboys though? Even if FF doesn’t sell on Xbox (not saying I believe this), SE can offset costs with a Game Pass bag. I’m sure MS would absolutely love to have a new FF game either launch on GP or be placed in GP several months after release. They could even make it a console-only deal if they don’t want to hurt PC sales.
I personally don’t care about FF, so the series can die off for all I care. I only played FF7R, which was a very impressive game, but I got my fill of the franchise. Glad that I at least played one of them though since it is such a historically important franchise.
Star Fox 64 is tremendous, that’s definitely my favorite N64 game, I used to play it over and over again. I still randomly shout “Only I have the BRAINS to rule Lylat!” at my family and they have no idea wtf I’m talking about.
What would YOU do if they quipped back, “do a barrel roll!”?
Andross’s enemy is my enemy
My emperor, ive failed youuuuuuu!
Two phrases burned into my memory. Great great game.
This is obvious. While console exclusives are super important for ardent fans of that specific console, the fact they are exclusive great limits the conversation about them. Few people are willing to spend hundreds of euros to play a game when they already have hardware perfectly capable of running games of that scope and fidelity. As a result, a Playstation owner won’t sing praises of the new Final Fantasy release to their PC/Xbox friends, and in turn those PC/Xbox friends won’t sing praises of the game to their other Playstation friends.
I suspect Elden Ring or Harry Potter would also sell 3M instead of 15M if they were PS5 only. It’s also the same problem Microsoft had with 1st party releases before going day 1 PC and day 1 Game Pass. Almost all of them were bmbing in the first half of the Xbox One generation due to very limited social reach.
Rare was definitely a different beast back then.
It would be good if Free Radical and Playtonic come back some day.
Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire for me. It was essentially the blueprint for the modern TPS.
Playtonic would be the perfect developer for Banjo. I loved Yooka Laylee. I saw that they were going to double in size soon (investment from Tencent).
I remember playing Tetrisphere a lot and some wrestling game. Cant remember which one lol.

Performance mode for Alan Wake 2.
This series should be like MLB: a traditional Game Pass game.
