Xbox isn't leaving you behind - But it is moving forward

It is fully-backed? The console isn’t going anywhere

More proof of next gen Xbox

Look even if this gen gets cut short to 2026 next gen will probably last until 2034.

Xbox fans have at least 10 years of console gaming ahead and most likely more.

I don’t think they keep doing “generations” if they do an Xbox/PC Hybrid, not the way we know them.

Point still remains though, since Xbox is commiting to next gen and this gen still has some time left people have ALOT of time to deal with their fears of hardware going away. I’ll probably be in my 70’s before the world moves on from Local console hardware in favor of streaming/new type of game machine etc.

It’s not exactly something I’m very worried about right now.

See I’ll still buy an Xbox even in that scenario - sure I’d probably get PlayStation too as I eventually do most generations, but playing Game Pass on the hardware designed for it clicks with me - especially if I can do All Access and feel like I’m getting a free console with an expensive Game Pass sub :stuck_out_tongue:

Saying that I’m an idiot - I spent loads on a PC then mostly played Game Pass on it which I could’ve just done with my Xbox, and if I don’t buy a mid-gen upgrade or new Xbox day 1 it’s a miracle of willpower (which I don’t normally have).

I probably play more indies that AAA on Game Pass, and like to potter through then at my own pace to the extent it’d be cheaper to buy them than sub - but I love the discovery of new games and trying them without risk.

That and my love of the Xbox controller layout and ecosystem means I’m there day 1 for as long as they make consoles

I keep seeing this talk about next Xbox might be a PC, and I’m trying to picture what that might look like. Are we talking Steam Box kinda like? It will have the ease of use of a console, look like one but we can buy new parts for it? I guess it would probably be easier for devs too?

It’s an ARM based Xbox that dual boots into Xbox Core or Windows 11(12)

Ah, that would make having the Steam and Epic stores very easy on that, for example. And much more. I am very in favor of this idea. But we won’t necessarily be able to take out parts and buy new ones?

Liked the article and all and you said your peace, while i disagreee i can at least come to respect your honest take on this.

Feel like rambling a bit in regards to recent news and such, both positive and negative that the article went over.

Starting with negative, in regards to the porting games over to other consoles. I think it was a decision not made likely by anyone on the Xbox team, at least i can imagine. However my biggest concern comes from when Sea of Thieves hits playstation and becomes a success like it aiming to be given pre order sales on the Us, i fear that the likes of Halo and Gears could potentially be ported.

Pillars that have been the identity of Xbox and its community for decades. If they were to do this, i can imagine a load of people leaving the console for good and that it would effectively kill Xbox in general. Not just consoles but the entire brand itself.

If anyone says am being paranoid with this needs to realise that i do raise a solid point in this and am hoping that any journalist, who cares for console users, that gets the chance to interview anyone of the higher ups of Xbox ask this particular questions: What are the plans in regards for console users since you plan to port many games over to other consoles? Will you try to make some things exclusives or are you effectively going to ignore the console community that have invested on the brand, for for than 2 decades, for great games and exclusive content? Also how good would hardware be without any form of exclusive game only avalable for Xbox console users if all you do is port games to rivals and effectively killing competition as a whole while also gaining nothing in return from your competitors?

Now for the positive, in regards to save keeping your digital library is honestly a thing worthy of having, i respect Xbox desire of respecting our library as best they can, i just hope they can bring more backward compatible games soon, i think it was a move that was smart and engaging for console users all around.

Sorry for rambling on this, but i really needed to get this off my chest. Mostly because i have been down in the dumps over most of the decisions Xbox have been doing as of late and as a console only user i feel like they just do not care about us and is more interested in porting games over to rivals and gain nothing for us as a result. Not even a couple of playstation or nintendo games.

I’d imagine it would be an xbox that dual boots and not a pc, so still their own system. If they let OEM’s in on it though (they’ll be pissed otherwise) then we get more options.

Something existing does not at all indicate that it is fully backed. To me the multiplat strategy fundamentally is an admission that the Xbox console audience is not enough and by extension it is a deprioratization of said audience. I lived through all these exact same arguments with Stadia and I have no interest in doing it again now. A fully backed Xbox console would not be giving away platform exclusives. Would not have cratering sales in every region other than the US. Would actually have regular meaningful marketing.

At the end of the day I waited for over a decade for MS to get it’s act together and finally deliver compelling exclusive content that compares favorably to their competitors and when they’re finally positioned to do so they have this strategy shift. I was considering switching platforms at the start of this Gen due to my disappointment with the previous one despite being an avid user of the platform since the OG Xbox, but they sold me on staying with announcements of exclusive first party titles and the Bethesda deal. Now we are learning that those games will likely not end up exclusive in the long run after all. My patience has run out and I’m moving on from their console.

That being said, I’m still very much looking forward to games from Xbox first party. Fable is my most anticipated game overall out of any. But this strategy shift has quite literally left me behind in that I entirely disagree with the decision and it has given me the final push to decide to no longer primarily play on a platform that is often treated as second class, lately even by the platform owner (paid online, PC only first party games, 30 fps caps in big releases, etc.)

The closest I can imagine them implementing this is a modular style design.

For example the old “Phonebloks” prototype (which I believe failed): https://youtu.be/oDAw7vW7H0c?si=EkIoGTn8YJiraLu5

However I very much doubt they would do modular TBH, they are far more likely to do regular incremental upgrades like mobiles (e.g Samsung S22, S23 & S24 etc) hence the new forwards compatibility team.

By that logic, the PlayStation platform is not fully backed either. They are giving away their exclusives to PC. Its just a matter of time before everything they release is Day One on PC too.

Yea it does seem like Sony is about 5 years behind MS on this but it will come to them as well, Sony is currently making baby steps to not piss off their fanbase but it is already starting to become more clear that unless Sony wants to stagnate their only chance for real growth is also extending their games to more platforms

A lot of us feel like Xbox has been giving solid exclusive content since 2001, and that hasn’t changed. There have been ups and downs, but the “no gamez” argument was always insane. Do not ignore that PlayStation’s own business is suffering terribly and they are quickly pivoting to what Xbox is doing to try and find growth.

As of the Business Meeting this past February, I made the decision to no longer buy any games on the Xbox platform via digital or disc because I have no interest in supporting their multi-console decision. The only money that Microsoft will get from me will be for the games that are on Game Pass day one and do not have a physical disc version which as of now, includes Hellblade 2 and im expecting Towerborne to be digital only as well, both games will be one month rentals for a total cost of $22 via an $11 monthly rental for each game.

Physical first party games such as Avowed and Indiana Jones will be rented via GameFly as I’ll wait the week or so it takes for me to receive the game in the mail. Since I started this generation with Xbox Series X as my primary gaming console, it will end the same way as how it started with all my third party multi-platform games being played on Xbox Series X but they’ll all be via GameFly.

Between the 2020 launch through 2023, I have spent a whopping $2590 (excluding sales tax) on software and to subscribe to Game Pass six times for a month each time. This doesn’t include the $800 I spent on the Xbox Series X bundle from GameStop two months after launch. Total would be $3390.

PlayStation 5 is my secondary console exclusives only gaming console and will stay that way for the duration of the generation but I have already purchased three games digitally on PSN in 2024 which is the total amount of games I purchased in the previous three years combined.

As for post Xbox Series X/PlayStation 5, my decision has already been made. I’m keeping the Xbox Series X until Sony releases PlayStation 6 which I believe will be November 2028 which at that point, I will switch back to PlayStation as my primary gaming console platform. Due to Microsoft wanting to port their first party games which I do believe will be day one on PlayStation sooner rather than later just like Microsoft did with PC releases and just like Sony is doing with their PC releases.

Reason why I firmly believe that day one is sooner rather than later is quite simple - MONEY.

Microsoft is simply a money hungry greedy ass company trying to get back what they’ve spent the last six years especially with ABK and the best way to make the most revenue and in turn profit is by releasing their first party games on Sony/Nintendo platforms not months or years later when there’s no hype or interest but on day one when all the hype and interest is at it’s peak.

With that all said, I will still play and complete the first party games that im interested in from Microsoft but spending anywhere near the amount of money in the Xbox eco-system in 2024 and beyond is done.

EDIT: After a few posts back and forth with @Doncabesa my post does in fact sound fucking ridiculous and I must admit that having a dual OS on the next Xbox console does sound intriguing at the very least.

You sound ridiculous, and will look the same once Sony moves PlayStation over to a similar model.

Perhaps but excluding MLB and Bungie which is basically the equivalent of COD/Minecraft, I simply don’t see Sony porting ANY of their first party console exclusives to Xbox because they don’t need to do so. As for Nintendo, let’s be honest, they never give anyone anything ever so you can eliminate them from copying Microsoft right off the bat.

Be honest, do you truly believe that the market leader in Sony or even if you want say they’re second behind Nintendo is going to start porting their first party games to Xbox? Sorry but I don’t because unlike Microsoft, they care way more about their console platform and exclusivity and have built their entire dominance around it.

Sony is not market leader, they’re 2nd behind Tencent in the only metric that matters, money. They’re also barely keeping any right now with their horrific margins. All of these companies suck at the teet of capitalism and will do what they have to to grow. It’s not about making money, it’s growth. PlayStation is quickly pivoting to match Xbox’s trajectory, and their games will be day and date on PC, which means they’re day and date on a hybrid Xbox that dual boots into Windows. Stop thinking of how the system used to work, that is dead and buried and has been for years.
