Exactly, that’s why I’m expecting a diverse line-up of games and genres, something which should be celebrated.
What is the worst E3/Showcase in Xbox history?
I would say any with an emphasis on Kinect.
Lol.
Okay, let’s say the quality tomorrow will be the same as whichever you think it’s the worst. Could you imagine the crowd booing? It will be Boo and Buu-urns moment. I can’t help but laugh at the thought. Strongly doubt it will come to that, but just imagine.
I wonder if other Bethesda studios will be there? I would think id is ready to announce their new game?
I think I will go next year.
So rewatching the kinect ones now, I think I disagree. They were trying to make the Xbox brand bigger and appeal to more people than just normal console gamers, and I think it could have been a cool thing if it had worked out, they were doing stuff around fitness and music and shows and movies and games and controlling it with voice way before siri or Alexa. I wish they had been more successful and we could see what they were building toward, I think we’d be pleasantly surprised. And at first it honestly seemed to be super well received by the audiences.
The console was too weak against the PS4, had a mandatory part of hardware which no one wanted and they poorly explained why owning a game digital only is bad. On top of that it was 100€ more vs the PS4. They even tried to raise the power with this infamous ESRAM and added FIFA14 to add value.
A lot of us tend to forget how successful it was as a product.
I personally believe that nothing will top the incredibly poor rolled out of the Xbox One. From the price, to the mandatory Kinect, to the apparent lack in horsepower, to the focus on TV and media center capabilities (great features but not what the people in the audience were looking for), to the fact that Xbox wasn’t expanding their first party capabilities to the point where they were overly reliant on 3rd party exclusives… Essentially setting up the table for a bad generation. Like you got a sense of impending doom from that. I can’t think of a conference that could be worse than that.
If you believe the rumours, Microsoft had a ton of first/second party games, but canceled them for first/second party Kinect games to canceled them after they realized that no one wanted a mandatory Kinect.
A lot of people make the mistake of thinking Kinect was what harmed Xbox and nearly killed it. It wasn’t.
Kinect was pretty successful. The thing that harmed them was not having invested into the first party sufficiently to support their console let alone a peripheral that needed specific games building for it.
At the start of the generation (360) Xbox had a head start so could make pseudo exclusivity deals, marketing deals, secure 2nd and 3rd parties. It’s how cod became so associated with the console. I remember national U.K. radio breakfast show presenter Chris Moyles talking about playing cod on his Xbox. Being a big fan. This was very unusual at the time and it sort of showed how Xbox had a hold. But for me even before Mattrick they misread the market they thought that you could forever survive on the deals they did in those few years. But you couldn’t. They failed to build a compelling first party and thus eventually as Sony crept up behind them on a strategy of strengthening their own first party those deals dried up as they became prohibitively expensive.
Kinect was never the issue and in a way neither was Mattrick…though he was clueless about the market. The early 360 days are when Xbox got it badly wrong. They failed to build the foundations then and there.
Yeah, kinect was fine, it was actually insanely successful at first which is why they iterated it for the Xbox one.
Really the issue seemed to be that they didn’t convey the messaging well, and they overlooked that while the first was popular and sold well, there was still a large percentage of users who didn’t want it. They bought into the concept of having it for all users in order to be able to guarantee to developers that users would have it and be worth developing for, having standards of everyone having a feature instead of splitting the community for devs. They also hadn’t focused on the console power probably because they were trying to keep the price as low as possible including the kinect.
I think though that if it had been optional from the start and they had kept their focus on the rest of the package, they would have been fine.
The real crime of Kinect was keeping Rare trapped.
It has been said that Extended showcase will be similar to 2021 as in expecting more announcements.
In a new blog post or something ?
Eh, it did play it’s role in the xbox one fiasco. Remember Snowden and the NSA whistle blowing? The thought of having a camera set up in your living room that recorded you non stop unable to unplug definitely wasn’t system selling.
Not sure, but XboxEra reported it.

What happened?
