I would assume whatever contract that was signed back in 2020 between Sony and Activision probably states mainline games as part of the marketing deal, not remasters and Warzone 2.

Turning MW2 into a GAAS would be smart. Surely its going to be the most acclaimed and best selling CoD.

Don’t think that’s the sole reason. Cold War is known as one of the buggiest COD’s that sure had some lasting effect.

Also the messed up development schedule from the cancellation of the sledgehammer game, could play a role here.

They had to make a game with one year less than usual. Some of the support studios probably have been reassigned to bring it out of the door

Vanguard and Cold War only had 2 years of development (instead of 3 as Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2). Treyarch had to take over Sledgehammer and Raven for COD 2020.

If it’s for an amount of games and over a time period, maybe Warzone satisfied the game requirement for 2023 and the contract runs out.
