That would be my preference.
I’d love to see Initiative partner with Avalanche to help create an ambitious, BotW-styled AAA Kameo reboot, reimagined to be like Xbox’ AAA Zelda game where the titular characters is a warrior-princess, i.e. the hero of her own story.
Gears is costing more to produce while declining in popularity.
Its best days are behind it.
If you’re really invested in the IP’s long term viability, you should want for it to go on break. Coalition has pumped out a whole bunch of Gears content since 2015. It’s time, at the very least, for the franchise to make people miss it.
The opportunity for devs to flex their creative muscles on different projects for a couple of years will only benefit Gears when it returns in development by a Coalition that has enriched itself with new experiences it can draw from to make Gears game fit for the times its in.
I’m hoping for Microsoft to acquire Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal with the Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Legacy of Kain, Soul Reaver, Thief and Gex IP’s.
As someone who loved Legacy of Kain Blood Omen and prefers it over Soul Reaver, I would love a new Legacy of Kain game.
I don’t see Gears 6 debuting lower then gears 5 with 30 million Gamepass subscribers. In fact I think it may beat it 5 fold!
As the first game to topple fortnight and Microsoft’s biggest launch of last generation I disagree with the claim it is declining.
I feel the same about god of war and the last of us, but whaddaya gonna do.
I disagree. I like MCU movies, I want them to make more of them, not less. I don’t want them to go back to 1 movie every 2 years so I miss them more.
2019 to 2024 is 5 years. A few months longer then the original trilogy took to make…I don’t buy Xboxs to not play one of my most beloved ips for 5 years.
Hence, work on two games. That way the studio can actually grow and not substitute the IP for a new one which 8 times out of 10 isn’t as good as the one left to rot. Employees can work on one game or both and get variety.
With my solution we get to keep what we love and get the new and a one game studio becomes a two game studio.
Perhaps it wouldn’t, but Game Pass doesn’t exist to prop up AAA franchises declining in popularity. MS is counting on those big AAA franchises to be driving subscriptions.
MS has a vested interest in a) protecting the Gears IP and b) getting the most out Coalition. I think the fact Coalition is already working on non-Gears title to get used to UE5 is telling (why not a small Gears spinoff instead?), and perhaps indicative that MS might think the answer to ensuring both is one and the same.
You might feel that way, but God of War has never been more popular. It sold well over 10m copies in a year. The reboot resonated.
TLOU has literally only had 2 games, so I don’t understand how you’d even think of equating that IP with storied franchises like Gears and God of War.
Film is a very different medium.
I’d wager 5 years still isn’t enough, especially since it’s been on people’s conscience for years that Gears 6 is coming.
Nah, give that IP a solid 5 after the last bit of DLC support has dropped for Gears 6 and maybe then start putting down the ground work for a reboot shipping 5 years later, i.e. give it a solid decade.
Dude, your “solution” isn’t compatible with how game development works.
Making one video game at a time is extremely difficult. There’s a reason you don’t see a lot of studios with multiple titles in concurrent development - it’s a fucking nightmare. The studios that do it, and tend to do it successfully, operate using entirely separate teams.
So, if the Coalition were working on two games, how would the experience of the team on the new IP benefit the Gears team?
Right now, the best thing for Gears is to wrap up with a great sixth mainline title and put that franchise on ice. I happen to think there’s a lot of gas left in the tank for that IP, but timing is everything, and right now there is no wanting for Gears content. Coalition have seen to that with their insane work ethic.
With 30 million subs… what kind of insane player numbers can we expect from Forza Horizon 5?
I would back of it completely being 30 at this time.
Maybe mid 20’s.
Gears 5 did really well,I mean TC are hiring massively to work on the next game. Seems to have been a huge driver of XGP subs
FH5 will surely bring in a lot of new ones though so 30 by then is not impossible. And then Halo the month after that… it will be insane.
10m by Christmas lol
I didn’t say it wasn’t possible by X date, I just don’t think it’s at 30 now at this moment.
X date is a month away…
And didn’t Gamepass lifetime subscriptions double the quarter gears 5 released? …like more then State of Decay, Sea of Thieves and Forza Horizon 4 did in a year and a half?
Ok. I expect Gears 6 to be played by 15 million people in a week, be critically decent, stay in the top 50 most played Xbox games for 5 years and be the best looking game released that year.
Good enough reason not to cancel it.
4 games. You forgot the remaster and Left Behind sold as standalone. There’s no denying it. Naughty Dog isn’t what they were. The metascore keep dropping and Sony doesn’t talk about how Part 2 sold for good reason.
They should kill off the IP wholesale. It’s a failure.
No-one cares.
So you want the IP to take a break despite your belief the next game will take more then half a decade to make? Are you insane?
That’s what I said they should do. The studio should grow…y’know like Playground Games did to make Fable instead of killing off Forza Horizon.
It doesn’t need to. We gamers end up with two AAA games instead of one AAA game and dead IP.
How did killing off Motorstorm to make Driveclub benefit anyone?
The best thing for gears is to kill it off? That’s not working that well for Uncharted, Jak, Resistance, Killzone, Motorstorm, Infamous, LittleBigPlanet …Sony fans told me Sony was building second teams to keep making those games and they never materialised and now those ip are as dead as dodos. As a casual gears fan with 2000 hours in gears 5…no thanks, I’d rather have a bird in the hand.
What the hell? IGN is already reviewing Halo Infinite’s multiplayer?
Calling Test Flight impressions a review is a little disingenuous.
This. While everyone wants to see the smaller new IP so The Coalition can get used to Unreal Engine 5 for Gears 6, I would prefer them to learn the engine with Gears 6 so after Gears 6, The Coalition can do a new IP with better knowledge of Unreal Engine 5.
Almost as bad as when they reviewed grounded’s early access right when it first came out and gave it a 6/10…
" Early Access Game comes up short. "
Yeah, no shit.
“Review: Early Access Game comes up short” makes me laugh so hard.
FH4 did 2 million in 2 weeks, 7 million in 4 months, 12 million in a year and 24 million in 26 months.
FH5 I imagine will do 6-7 million in 2 weeks. 15 million in 4 months and 25 million in 1 year.
50 million in 2 years.
Halo Infinite should do better.
