My crazy idea: let The Coalition make a new spin off Fallout using UE5. They’re a super efficient team and trying to recreate creation engine settings in UE5 would push their technical expertise even further, and allow UE5 to expand it’s tools in further.
Anyways crazy idea aside, I think the best solution is expanding the F76 team, to be big enough to start working on the new mainline Fallout with input from BGS and keep updating F76.
Once the onslaught of RPGs has happened and only TES VI is left…this would be the perfect moment to drop a brand new Fallout. I don’t expect a thing but wouldn’t it be fantastic to have a new mainline Fallout on CE2 before TES VI comes out? But for that to be able to happen…we probably should be starting to see signs of this next year, right? Job postings and such. Especially if it’s a studio that hasn’t made a Fallout completely on their own yet. Because apparently MGS Maryland made the Fallout 76 world?
Assuming it would be Austin, they’ll need the time for it I’m sure.
I don’t know if I am in the minority here, but I would prefer if InXile and Obsidian create their own IPs rather than working within the fallout universe. I thought Outer Worlds was a solid game, and with a bigger budget for the sequel could be special. Also a steampunk RPG from InXile sounds more exciting to me than them working within the Fallout universe
Agree on Obsidian. Outer Worlds, Avowed and Grounded is plenty to be getting on with.
Think it needs to be recognised, though, that Fallout is Brian Fargo’s IP. Interplay may have sold it to Bethesda, but he is still the original creator and inXile is his studio.
That doesn’t mean he wants to work on it again, he’s on record talking about how he’s let the franchise go. Wasteland was just as much his baby and they’ve been reviving that with great success.
Agreed. I think Xbox being the creatively laissez-faire organization that they are will be great for the long-term health of the studios, their people, and ultimately for us gamers. FTR, I’m not at all opposed to Bethesda giving the reigns for a new Fallout to someone in XGS, but the only ones that I could doing the series justice would be InXile or Obsidian… but I don’t think they’d want to (based on statements and the amount of ongoing projects). Still would be wonderful though… my personal favorites in the series, 2 and New Vegas, were both helmed by Obsidian (formerly Black Isle obviously).
Really hope those in charge realize this as well, even if we are going to be busy as fuuuuuuck with all that RPG goodness these upcoming years, on top of that all the other genres by XGS. But Fallout is too big of a IP to just give a break for too long, but I’d say that about TES too and here we are ten years since Skyrim, lord.
It definitely feels very similar to how TESO made it possible for the mainline series to get a long, long break, now that they have Fallout 76. I guess it depends on how steady the player base remains and if it keeps increasing, if it does and they bring new content like they are doing now…I can definitely see them not being in a real hurry. It remains to be seen how important it is to them that 76 isn’t exclusive to Game Pass however.
I hope they ARE in a hurry though, well, somewhat of a hurry because 2025 at the earliest isn’t a hurry by any means.
I love watching Brian Fargo, Tim Shafer speak, and Urquhart speak. They have been scrapping and fighting for their entire careers. There is the desire to do well, alongside their immense talent.
Especially, Fargo - who deserves better. Seeing how they are expanding inXile makes me very happy. Not sure how much Obsidian and DoubleFine want to expand. Obsidian has a very unique theory about team sizes and don’t want to expand more beyond a point.
I have no idea how I am going to complete ONE 60hr game, let alone 3 or 4: Fallout, TES, Starfield, and maybe even Avowed. 60hrs might be a lower estimate.
Yeah, I really recommend the NoClip vidocs covering Obsidian, and the podcast Danny did with Brian where he explicitly discusses the boon that the acquisition brought. In full agreement with you btw, I’m a veteran-dev stan and while the world focuses on the Kojimas, I’m infinitely more interested in the stories of those who had to struggle and still make industry-defining titles like Fargo, Schafer, Urquhart, and even Mikami.
Especially if you take your time and explore every nook and cranny. I know I will with Starfield, boy am I gonna take my time with that one, haha. With that in mind it’s not a necessity for them to release multiple RPGs in a year, however for those that have finished the game by then it is great. Game Pads should mean there’s no reason not to drop two or even three bombs, even if they are all the same genre.
I have a lot of catching up to do with Noclip, I haven’t seen their Obsidian one yet and the same for the Prey doc by them. I did see Bethesda Game Studios and Fallout 76, awesome docs. I also love seeing footage of how these studios look from the inside.
As a massive Indiana Jones fan (Last Crusade was the first time I ever went to the cinema) I got to say I am super stoked to see what Machine Games and Todd can do with it. If that means Wolf 3 needs to take a back seat then sorry, but that’s how it’s got to be.
