Eh, I love my share of indies, but it’s hyperberbole like this that smacks me back to reality and reminds what a great indy title usually is. And that’s the part that gets left unsaid. It’s great…for what it is

This is not true, don’t mistake the internet forum bubble for reality. The racing genre is right up there with sports franchises and is probably next in line after FIFA globally (NFL and NBA don’t have as much global appeal).
Way over 20 million players is not a small pond. According to you every game not Minecraft, Roblox, GTA, Fifa, Fortnite or CoD is a niche. Thats absurd.
I don’t think Forza is niche at all and neither is the racing genre but I personally find that you need another game to accompany it (could be my non liking of racers speaking here lol).
Going by the most played games on on these consoles one could argue that these third person “cinematic” games are just as niche. Compared to the COD and Fortnites and GTAs of the world.
Nobody is saying you have to personally like Forza Horizon. If all these rumors are true, the end of the year should be pretty good and diverse with at least a 3D puzzle plattformer, an open world racing game, a fps and a rts. Lets see
Over 20 million players is more of a testament of the accessibility and quality of Forza, not the mass appeal of the genre itself. Forza=big fish, small pond=racing genre. Does Forza have any objective competition in that genre? How many quality racing games are produced per year? Is having a top tier racing game mandatory for a platform to be successful? This is what I mean when I say small pond. I also never brought up numbers, so please don’t put a perspective on me that I didn’t state myself.

No big deal. There is a problem with so-called gamers in general not being in touch with reality (not you). I mean who acknowledges Candy Crush as an important game? COD and other FPS games might as well not exist, FIFA makes BILLIONS of dollars with game modes we don’t care about. Yet on the forums people are fighting over cinematic 3rd person games which are nothing compared to the real money makers. Racing games are just another important genre that exists outside the elitist gamer discussion. They just do their thing and quietly sell world wide.
It’s easy to call a game Niche when someone is not interested. But it’s more about media popularity which makes a game looks niche.
For me Robolox is a niche game. But I now in its potential it’s bigger then most of the media popular games.
