Xbox Game Studios |OT3| Once more....with feeling (Part 1)

My son is 5 and plays Xbox way more often than PS5 or Switch. Xbox has hundreds of games that appeal to him. Granted I’m liberal about what I let him play. As long as it doesn’t have nudity or ultra violence then it’s fine. Video games are a major hobby that we share.

Phil REALLY wants some family friendly games and has been pushing for some for awhile now. Playtonic announcing that they will be rebranding in the coming weeks has caught my attention, especially as they are still close to the guys at Rare from when they split off. I have a funny feeling that Playtonic is going to become Rare Derby

This basically means Xbox is about to go on a major shopping spree. The advantage Xbox has over any other competitors (Amazon, Google) is they have been in the gaming industry for over 20 years and built trust with the gaming ecosystem. They also have a great track record now of leaving studios on their own to create and not have them conform.

Sony and Nintendo can offer the same but they can’t outbid MS.

Viva Pinata in an era where Stardew Valley and Minecraft are massive makes too much sense.

and we haven’t even hit its peak state yet with Halo and big name exclusives. This pace will also accelerate when it becomes available on more platforms like Samsung TVs.

I think that Playtonic may just be doing a merging with another indie studio (just my guess) but I saw a crazy idea on Twitter that I quite like:

Imagine if Playtonic joined XGS and rebranded as Rareware (Rare’s name until 2003), as a lot of them are veterans of the old Rareware and Yooka-Laylee was an hommage to the old Rare and Banjo-Kazooie.

They would manage the old Rareware’s family portfolio like Banjo, Conker, Jet Force Gemini + Viva Piñata / Kameo + new IPs and AA games in the same style) while Rare would still be the new IP / new experience factory that they want to be.

With Banjo-Kazooie or Viva Piñata as the first (AA) game of that new Rareware and with both studios collaborating when needed (and also Steve Mayles (Playtonic) and Gregg Mayles (Rare)) as the studios are located in the same area.

This could maybe create too much pressure and expectations for a studio with only 27 people, though that name would also give them a great exposure and instantly more prestige, and bringing back Banjo-Kazooie would have some expectations anyway whether your name is Rareware or not.

That’s not happening but I loved that idea. :joy:

I know people aren’t high on rdx but Tim says they are looking at more publishers

Nobody has access to that kind of info. The very fact people on twitter are saying this means it’s likely to not be true.

Who the hell knows I don’t doubt him he has legit connections inside Xbox

M&A is incredibly secretive and involves laws. Legal ramifications etc. I doubt anyone would leak to a guy on twitter who is known for talking

The Obsidian one was on the net months before it was announced.

He is vague about these things its not like he said what publisher with tencent, Amazon, Google involved its obvious especially with what satya and phil have said for months

one way to get an XSX
