Nobody but “insiders” pushed this xbox live gold going free thing for months.
This is exactly why this is so moronic if you are a parent you would have to be insane to pick a Xbox over a Playstation at this point not even considering the Free to play paywall!
To be fair I don’t think people like Jez Corden and Jeff Grubb are cloud chasing with those kind of statements. Maybe the sources had something wrong or Microsoft changed their planes. I don’t blame them for it.
Best way in the sense that will get most of the current users to switch, yeah I do.
As of now there’s no reason to subscribe to gold instead of gamepass ultimate, and they are converting on a 1:1 rate.
I think the bad press is intentional so people now they need to switch to gpu.
So by the time comes when they decide they don’t want it anymore there are not many users left that won’t switch.

Insane, to allow my kids access to play hundreds of games for 15 dollars a month instead of spending 60-70 dollars per game.

As a shortsighted plan AND exclusively for your current users sure it might work but what about the undecided customers that they will go to buy a console and see double the price for XBLG when compared to PS+? t doesn’t sound that good now isn’t it? also intentional bad press? does Xbox really needed any of that right now that everything was going great?
Also there are people who either don’t have the money to pay the price for GPU or they simply don’t care about it, I know crazy.

All the insiders were trying to predict it, so they could say they knew about it and now we this happens lol.
Strange decision by MS and they deserve all the negative press they get, you have Xcloud attached free to Gamepass Ultimate, no one cent extra for a totally new service which probably takes way more resources to operated as compared to XBL.
If they were so tight on XBL why not find other areas to make up money? Go charge 70$ for games, you can hide behind Sony for that. Stop giving DLCs in gamepass, instead of trying to make Xbox hard to recommend for casuals.
Exactly this is the only console i’d get for kids, would save me a ton of money

I understand they want everyone on GPU (and make no mistake, everyone should be on GPU), but this still doesn’t feel like a great way to do that.

But the problem is most kids only play free to play games at most full Cod multiplayer or Fifa/Madden. So if I don’t have a lot of money knowing that this are the games my kid wants to play I would probably go with the 60$ or free for f2p games option over 120$ or 180$ option. And just to clarify I still of course think Gampass Ultimate is the best deal you can get but it’s also about casuals and people who just play a few games a year. I just don’t think they should increase the price of a service that is free on pc and offers objectively less than your direct competitor especially not during a pandemic.

Ever since they showed Gamepass numbers, they dug themselves a hole.
You have to show an increase every quarter/year. Maybe gamepass wasn’t growing as fast currently, as they wait for all the content to start rolling. Now Gamepass has become a pillar like Office 365 where you have to show growth or investors are unhappy.

People using gamepass as a blanket excuse to justify xbox first party games poor performance/sales is ridiculous also.
