You’re correct, and I am not against Microsoft going this route. I would be intrigued if they get an industry veteran to attract talent to build a studio. I know it’s more work to get that done than to acquire a studio, but I think the risk may be worth it when you have 23 other studios.
I don’t think they will do it again until after Perfect Dark releases and they can assess how well TI went. Them partnering with Crystal makes it more complicated too. Who knows if TI will staff up themselves or work with Crystal again for their next game.
Are you guys reviewing Redfall on XSX?
Initiative is tricky tbh since they went with small team, but they seem to be more managers that are managing outsourced teams. I believe the studio size is 55 people which isn’t large enough for AAA output. However, they seemed to leverage outsourcing and seem to be more managers than developers. Unsure if I am phrasing that last part right, but it seems they’re not a traditional studio. Again, could be wrong how studio operates since it’s not my expertise
This gives me coming in hot vibes.
I hope it’s just performance mode being missing and not other things missing or like, the quality mode being rough.
I do not have a review code yet, if I get one I’ll be playing it on Series X and PC
Thanks! Hopefully you guys receive a code soon.
Turn10 was built in house at Microsoft and it’s been a flagship studio ever since their first game release. Same goes for The Coalition. They acquire studios become they want IP and the studio culture, that doesn’t mean they should abandon the idea of building studios from the ground up just because The Initiative had a rocky start. You don’t give up.
I like your optimism, but games scores tend to get dragged down by pre-conceived sentiment. Also with the vibe around Xbox currently I actually wouldn’t be surprised if a reviewer knocked off points because their deal got blocked. Anythings on the cards apparently considering Metro can knock points off a game because Xbox hasn’t released other games.
Im just expecting Redfall to come in at mid 70’s.
You went back like 20 years.
They acquire because they can afford to and they want content sooner rather than later.
They also set up 343 obviously (and World’s Edge actually).
The coalition was founded 13 years ago.
Microsoft has the money to build more studios from the ground up. They have a lot of money to leverage.
I mean we really don’t know if the only missing feature is 60 FPS mode. If everything else is good, Redfall could still be success.
So all I have to do is remove the sticker and then I get 60 fps
so melodramatic. From the usual suspects.
Microsoft has too much IP sitting around rotting but not enough studios to leverage this IP. They haven’t had a new entry in Phantom Dust or Crimson Skies since the original Xbox. Xbox has talented studios creating games currently but they need to really dig up their past and bring it to the future.
Why did Phil Spencer make a big deal out of Crimson Skies returning back in 2017 on the original Xbox backward compatibility program, only for the game to be shelved indefinitely again? Xbox made a big deal about the return of Phantom Dust, only to cancel and promise the return one day. They clearly want to go back on original IP too, look at Perfect Dark? Look at Age of Empires? Age is now a success on PC once again. They see value in old IP but they don’t have the studios to work on them.
They should build out more studios. We don’t have the obligation to sit around and wait for these studios to build out, it’s microsofts job to manage second party publishing deals until they have enough studios to hit a satisfactory rate of first party games releasing.
That’s the thing exactly, we don’t know shit when it concerns the XSX version and it’s coming out next week. Don’t mind me, I’m a bit worried now but I really hope these worries are for nothing. If all else is fine, a bug here and there sure, and then relatively soon the update for 60fps…we good.
Xbox PR is a mess full stop
How do you make Crimson Skies into a big AAA success in 2023?
Perfect Dark has an obvious path (Deus Ex meets Tomb Raider etc), but games like Crimson Skies are harder.
Banger launch trailer.
