Yeah but when the pandemic stuff ends, all the subscription services will take a massive hit. At least thatās the theory. Yet Sony/Nintendo will be magically immune because they are 90% reliant on traditional retail sales. Forgetting for a moment that if the pandemic lockdown stuff ends, people will not have as much time for video games, period. Whether itās Sony or Game Pass.
Sony and Nintendo model with full retail sales will take a harder hit, if any, cheap subscriptions with big value attached will flourish even more.

Well this is uncharted territory so weāll find out for the first time right? Of course the lockdowns are not ending for another 6-9 months and it will take another 6-9 months after that to find out the ramifications for video games. So we can check back around fall of 2022 to see who won.
Whoās to say how things will change when this plague ends? Itās not exactly a scenario weāve encountered in recent history
I do wonder if xcloud will see more adoption if people are out and about more.
Incidentally, I donāt think itās interesting to look at who āwonā, Iām much more interested in how the paradigm changes than who does it.

If they are at 23, it is more than 1M per month, itās almost unbelievable, itās like a rising tide.
If i understand Jez correctly, his 23 million figure is from 20th of April. Just remember when Microsoft reports their financial results next week, this number should be from end of March. So Microsofts official number could be a little bit lower.

They may even not announce them, I think they will say ā25 million etcā¦ā at E3, it would be a smarter use of the info.

I am personally expecting the game industry to experience at least a mild dip due to people being able to spend their money on other leisure activities.

ā¦a point where it slows down because not every single Xbox owner will sub. For example thereās like 115m~ PS4ās out there but like 50m ish PS+ subs, Xbox has half that user base or less and already at a ārumouredā 22M. We could see a slow down once it hits most Xbox users are subbed and then you will see them make a big push for PC/Mobile.
I can just see people panic if game pass doesnāt get 1M subs per month, can already see the articles in my head;
Xbox Game Pass has had 1M subs per month, but this month they have failed to deliver that.
Xbox Game Pass has had 1M subs per month, but not any more.
Xbox Game Pass starting to show the cracks as it failed to hit 1M sub growth this month
Is Xbox Game Pass becoming stale and losing traction, this month it has failed to even reach 1M extra growth.
What will happen when last gen support will be ended? A tough battle that would be.
I would say, that is the biggest challenge for Gamepass.
The current chip shortage is doing harm to Gamepass.
But, the xCloud strategy and PC Expansion will save Gamepass.
Consoles are still very important.

The last report was at 18m users as of jan 26th

Really? Is MS financial year 1 month out then? Because anything reported on 26th January is usually for the quarter September to December.

I just counted and I have a ābacklogā of 82 games on Xbox Game Passā¦
My real backlog of hundreds of games stares at me in horror.

You might not be ready to do it yet, but you need to pick about 10-12 of those games to say that you will definitely play, and have the other 70 as games that itās cool to think about playing, but know that you never will.

If the only thing hurting Game Pass is a chip shortage theyāre doing very well. The worst thing is to have low demand and high supply(think 2014). Now they have high demand and limited supply, itās actually a good thing. Sometimes scarcity creates a feeling of need.

He isnāt wrong. If MS sold 50-60 million XBO consoles and they represent a majority of subscribers (an assumption), to sustain this level of growth they need to see growth in PC and Mobile.
Mobile is still a pretty unproven market and still needs upgraded server blades. At the same time, they are achieving this without big titles. So⦠who knows.

You think Game Pass isnāt getting a lot of PC users? I think it is. Thatās a billion potential subscribers.

It might be, agree that is a huge growth area. In my mind i am thinking its like 75% console but i spend 100% of my time on consoke centric forums so wtf do I know haha
