Future Xbox platform development would be the PC dev environment per Jez’s earlier reporting. That is the lead for most things, should be fine.
You know, it’s funny. They’re talking about next-gen yet I’m not upset as those who heard about PS6. The reason is because of the line-up. The fact in the last showcase, they announced the big four will arrive next year, which gives the sense of “ending with a bang” yet there’s likely more to come after. With PS6, you’re wondering if you made your PS5 purchase worth, if you don’t game third party on it. Is Wolverine going to be the swan song? Know what I mean?
I would say to you that most games are made on a PC now, but so many games are developed to run on Sony’s tech limitations first and foremost, even the likes of Witcher 4 sadly
They’re downscaled to PS5 first and then ported to Xbox. This version just has it be the PC version by default and you don’t have to work with console dev environment quirks on the Xbox side.
ARM are pretty great processors. It’s just not great for what xbox needs. MS is the backward compatibility company. AMD just makes too much sense for xbox right now. I couldn’t believe Nick on the last podcast questioned xbox backward compat future. They will always focus on backwards compat. I recenty installed MS Encarta from 1999. Works fine in windows 11. What other software company makes sure 20-year-old software still works on their platform?
I know, and that usually means it doesn’t matter how impressive the tech for the Next box, PS6 graphics will lead the development
Sony’s system being the lead will still be same(they’re considered the default) even if Microsoft where to change their APU to a GPU and an intel CPU. If anything I think doing so will just get more delays for the console side, as devs have to change up how they work on Xbox.
Or even just throw a pc version in there and force Xbox gamers to start messing with specs settings to get a good experience.
Oh ARM is amazing, for the right applications (Snapdragon chips have come a long way, for example for the SBC market); my point was directed at the people that ignored every point of data for why AMD x86 was a better option, for both gamers and developers, and I was proven right in the end.
As for bc… I haven’t listened to the pod in some time, but anyone questioning BC from the platform-holder that has verifiably been the most friendly towards software preservation (even before including Windows in the conversation), clearly missed 30 years worth of memos…
Yeah, but if you break away from the AMD mix you might have got the mix of Intel and Nvidia on the Xbox
Gods no, f that.
The entire point behind this push is having the options. It’s, by default, a “just works” experience. But, if you want the PC versions of gaming it is there if you dig in.
As long as I don’t have to bother with it and it doesn’t get in the way of my gaming it’s ok.
That will be a main focus. This is an Xbox, this just works, and you nerds can nerd out if you want to go deeper.
Since I am not a native English speaker, I have a hard time finding out if some statements are a wish, a strong goal, or a possibility
- The next gen Xbox will have other stores ?
- A handled is in this partnership ?
What do you think/did you understand about this ?
But at least a next gen console running all your library is sure
So, it’s going to be based on Windows not XboxOS, with full backwards compatibility and multiple stores (allowing you to play PlayStation games). What does Sony have over Xbox next gen besides holding on to their existing base. I think it will be quite difficult for them to grow next gen when the moat (exclusives) is no longer going to be a factor, their classic 3rd party timed exclusive strat will also be pointless because no dev is skipping PC these days. Xbox in return will get a much bigger library since it will be able to run all PC games, emulate/pirate, basically do whatever you want.
Running windows also means 3rd party devices or Xboxes that should allow you to buy whatever spec/fidelity you want. Pretty exciting news all round, esp. as it eases most people’s fears of losing access to their old games.
I don’t think you will have to personally, I think they understand it has to be simple just like the current experience for the casual users. But if the option is there to do more imo I think it’s a good move as it also caters to that audience as well.
Can’t wait to see how it plays out but I’ll be there day 1!
Also, I guess Z2 Extreme isn’t part of this initiative? Wonder where that leaves the Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X?
I don’t think that will be the case anymore, unified Xbox+PC dev (basically windows) is a larger install base than PS and will most likely be the lead platform. You also have to consider the sheer size of Xbox first party that will be also transitioning fully to windows as the lead platform.
I’m a lot of things, casual is probably not one of them. I do prefer playing video games over troubleshooting PC’s tho.
But steam is the main store on Windows, whatever is developed for Xbox for the purpose of the console like experience will be through the Microsoft store. Meaning that while more people can be reached, it’s more likely Steam will get the biggest share of those sales.
That seems to be the intent.
