Xbox CFO Talks Bethesda Exclusivity; “We Want Bethesda Content to be First or Better or Best on Xbox Platforms”

Exactly!

Once they are done with a humongous game like Starfield they’ll start with maybe Halo Infinite for example and in between that go for some racing in FM or FH games. Or if they are in a fighting mood they start Battletoads. Xbox has so many studios now, once that is firjng on all cilinders we’re gonna see content left and right basically.

People might subscribe to GP solely for a Bethesda title, that’s their plan. But then they find out what other games both first party and third party are on offer. They won’t soon leave.

Keeping Bethesda for themselves is key, especially now that Jim Ryan seems to be hinting at a PS Game Pass thing.

Heads up Spencer and team I would say.

Wasn’t there a article somewhere that game pass increased DLC and micro transactions sales? Can’t find or remember a source though.

Numbers speak for themselves though. People do try out new kinds of game on game pass

Most of new super lucky tale players was on game pass. People on other platforms didn’t want to try it out but those on game pass did. And game pass will always have great indie titles like outer wilds and void bastards at launch, and get big indie games like hollow knight, untitled goose game and slay the spire allayed on. And ultimately those kind of games will keep people busy when they finish the XGS games or want to stop playing multiplayer.

And with perks to free to play games like warframe, PSO 2,and war thunder they get people to try out those as well. Game pass has so much value now that I think most would be content and continue subscribing.

Then you’ve either paid zero attention or you’ve only started gaming in the last few years.

RIght because I forgot about how the RROD Box and the 720 VCR Box were known for excellent hardware and services :man_facepalming:

Ironically the one console MS had that was actually competitive with Playstation and even beat them for a while was the 360 which had…“surprise Pikachu face” actual compelling software and top tier Halo and Gears titles to lure people in.

As soon as they stopped having compelling software suddenly they get curbstomped by the PS4 and even the Switch which released over 3 years later

Also Xbox has been around for nearly 20 years and they only started heavily pushing services over the last 4-5 years. So no, you are objectively wrong about that

Really? How’d that work for Xbox this past gen?

Going from neck and neck to getting curbstomped by over 2x times.

Great…so we can expect Halo…Avowed…Everwild…Hellblade 2 to come to the PS5 as well right? Afterall MS isn’t worried about Sony according to you right?

Sorry but this is by far one of the biggest cases of rationalization and mental gymnastics I’ve ever seen. If MS didn’t want to compete in the console space right now, they wouldn’t have released a console and would of probably prompted to release a device like Stadia/Luna…or at the very least have gone third party and put all of their games on Playstation/Steam (although doing this) Nintendo.

Phil has stated how important it is to set expectations and deliver an “Xbox” experience for “Xbox” fans. So yes…he does care about competing with Sony and Nintendo and he does care about exclusive content.

Quite a while ago I read an article or it was a quote, not sure anymore. But it was about how important Halo was for Xbox. Without Halo no Xbox basically is what was said. That no longer is the case, because Xbox now has more studios than they’ve ever had before and soon a heavy hitter, more than that with Bethesda.

With that in mind they’d be nuts, totally nuts to give away potential GOTY candidates like Starfield and when the time eventually comes The Elder Scrolls VI. Phil made it crystal clear that there games will be in their ecosystem unless the other two platform holders allow the full Xbox ecosystem on their system. So why would an exception be made for Bethesda? If anything, they should be the one being 100% a lock. But that being said, when the news appeared about Bethesda, wasn’t it said that they would be independent in terms of being publisher? Something like that. That definitely makes their case different than the other acquired studios. But to what extent?

Thank you…no one gave cared about how much powerful the OG Xbox was compared to the PS5…It was software that pushed it out the door (although it lost bigly to the PS2 it did outsell the Game Cube which also had an excellent software lineup) Phil and many of Xbox have already contributed Xbox’s success to Halo before other games started coming in.

This is also something else to consider, that Xbox eventually would want Game Pass on other platforms and giving your games away for short term sales would give up leverage on getting your service and eco-system on another platform.

Very good point that last bit. If Sony were to keep getting the Bethesda games they could easily say “nah, we’re good” since they get behemoth titles like BGS’s RPGs and Doom and so on. Sure, they don’t get Halo, Forza and all the other games but they’ll manage fine. So with all that in mind the logical thing to do would be to lock it all down. It should be interesting to see what they are going to say and do once the deal is finished.
