Xbox CFO Talks Bethesda Exclusivity; “We Want Bethesda Content to be First or Better or Best on Xbox Platforms”

An app on the TV would be better as that’s what it works as on a phone. Most tvs are smart now anyway, no need to buy separate piece of hardware when that money can be spent on the controller or perhaps the subscription itself instead.

Don’t understand this attitude. Why would there be a mass exodus? Because you cannot lord it up over PS fans?

Then its obvious that you haven’t paid any attention over the last 7 years…why is it that the PS4 sold over 2x as many units as the Xbox One? Why is it that the Switch absolutely bodied and lapped the Xbox One despite coming out over 3 years later?

Because they have compelling games that you can only play on their platforms thus people pick those platforms over Xbox, or people who own an Xbox switch to those platforms and the sales reflect that. Putting games that they own on another platform is a clear message that MS doesn’t give a shit about its own platform and by extension doesn’t give a shit about its player base

So yes…there would be a mass exodus…there’s already been a mass exodus this past gen, people who switched from Xbox One to PS4 because PS4 was offering God of War, Spider-man and Shadow of the Colossus while Xbox was offering crap like Crackdown 3, that trend will continue and people are going to go the platform where they can play both Elder Scrolls 6 and God of War over the platform where you can only play one of those games.

But Bethesda games are already on playstation. Why would there be an exodus of people from Xbox if they continued to be on playstation? That’s the pre-existing status quo. Nobody is proposing that the entirety of XGS might be on playstation.

Is Elder Scrolls 6 out yet? Is Starfield? Is Fallout 5? No one is talking about taking games away from PS5 that already exist (TESO) or have deals in place ei Death Loop/GhostWire.

That’s not the pre-existing status quo because those games don’t even exist in retail yet.

MS now has the ability to to give their platform significant value by having compelling exclusive content with massive IP’s…throwing that away would be the ultimate statement that MS doesn’t give a crap about Xbox as a platform or the people who invested in it and at that point they may as well be a 3rd party publisher.

That’s how I read this declaration.

We are not going to remove Bethesda game from Playstation, like DOOM Eternal you can still play it on Playstation but for the next game… I think it will be exclusive because you don’t pay 7 billion for time exclusive

Whilst I do not think it is likely that they’ll publish all or most of these games on the PS5 or Switch I do think some of what you say doesn’t make sense.

Someone who ALREADY has an Xbox Series X or S. You get the games day one into gamepass. Whether someone who has a PS5 can or can’t play them makes absolutely zero, not one bit of difference to you. You can enjoy the games, and if your saying they are less fun because your friend down the road can also play them on his system then you need to re-evaluate your life choices.

Now someone who doesn’t have an Xbox sure I can see an argument for - I’m getting one IF those games can’t be played on my PS5. I can understand those people taking that view.

Its quite clear to me that Xbox is about an ecosystem and they have very little interest in driving physical platform sales anymore. The ecosystem is currently, xbox consoles, phones, PC but is expanding all the time. And 100% if Phil can get gamepass or xcloud on playstation he will do. So I do think people should be adjusted to that idea by now. Its been going on for years.

Releasing Bethesda games on PS5 would be the dumbest thing MS could do. They have great momentum right now, and it all would be obliterated if ES6 and every other new Bethesda game shows up on PS5. It shows a complete lack of confidence in the Xbox hardware. “Hardcore” gamers already complain that there is no point buying an Xbox because the games release on PC, and that won’t change unless MS gets more exclusives that people actually want.

The acquisition is probably mostly to prevent Google, Amazon or Tencent snatching Bethesda away, but I really doubt MS is so bloody stupid to release the games on PS5.

They aren’t out so there are no exclusive Bethesda games on xbox… So why would people leave the xbox ecosystem because of games never being exclusive? If they’re in the ecosystem it’s not for these games because they don’t exist yet.

The only way what you’re saying makes sense (“there would be a mass Exodus”) would be if there was a massive amount of people who are only xbox gamers because of the vague hypothetical promise of future Bethesda exclusivity. Which is a bold assumption to make. Otherwise, nothing changes for them. There are like 15 other studios making exclusive games.Gamepass still exists and is amazing either way.

If you want to say “Bethesda being exclusive would increase the number of people who want to own xboxes” I would totally agree. But you’ve said instead that there will be a mass Exodus of people leaving xbox if there isnt, which is a very different claim.

I honestly think that all Bethesda titles will be exclusive to the xbox platform, at this point I only listen to what Phil says all the other ones should just stop answering questions on Bethesda deal.

If I can play all Sony games + half of MS games on a PS5 vs only MS games and whatever crumbs japanese devs throw at it on a XSX, I’ll switch to PS5 in a heartbeat.

Are you currently in the xbox ecosystem? If so, why, given that these Bethesda games aren’t currently exclusive?

Again - it’s one thing to say “more people will be attracted to the xbox if the games go full exclusive”. It’s anothet to claim that there will be a mass Exodus of people from Xbox if it doesn’t go full exclusive. It makes no sense. There are going to be more exclusives than last gen by a big margin even without beth, there will be a huge supply of day one gamepass titles even if they don’t end up all being exclusive. Why would existing xbox people exit en masse?? It seems like a better deal than last time easily

I hopped onto Xbox when the 360 launched. Up until the last half of the Xbox One gen, they had a steady stream of great exclusives.

Their output went down extremely hard but I remained optimistic because they strenghened their 1st party studios.

If they release timed exclusive AAA games, I’m out. Sony looks very strong, they got their own studios, they moneyhat aggressively and on top of that, MS basically gives them 1st party games? I honestly don’t see Xbox surviving as a console at that point.

It becomes redundant.

Frankly, I don’t see them being this stupid but stranger things have happened in this industry I guess.

In the latest interview Phil said that in the future there could be discussion about bringing GP to other platforms, but it wasn’t a priority he said. Also that Sony and Nintendo will have to allow a full Xbox ecosystem and that I don’t see happening.

For MS it’s not about selling consoles, well not as much as in the past. It’s all about Game Pass. They want to drive Game Pass through the Bethesda pipeline as Tim said. Cool, but you don’t do that by releasing the games on other platforms outside of your own ecosystem. Whether that would be a year or a few months later, people will just wait in that case.

What I want to know is, was “case by case basis” just some talk or do they mean it? And if they mean it, does this mean a follow up to TESO would release on other platforms and the big singleplayer heavy hitters stay inside the Xbox ecosystem? Hopefully as soon as the deal is done they start using clear language.

But what if come E3 they reveal Starfield gameplay and release date, Xbox and PC. Media starts asking them about PS5 and the still remain vague about it? Which I guess is a possibility. They may want to make it look like it’s exclusive to Xbox and PC, trying to get more GP subscribers and after a year or so release it on PS5 after all.

But that’s just speculation and I seriously hope they just start being transparent about it as soon as they can legally talk about it. But as others have said, do you make a purchase like that to basically have games timed exclusive? Wouldn’t it have been better to just strike deals with Zenimax to have the games day and date on GP?

And in the general Xbox thread someone today said that the fact Jim Ryan says this is telling. It tells us Xbox and him haven’t spoken on that, and also not some kind of clause in the deal that they need to stay multiplatform.

For me as a Xbox fan it shouldn’t matter much, I’ll get these amazing games day and date on GP but I want to see Xbox put themselves back on the map again. Become a big force to be reckoned with basically, get more and more subscribers to your ecosystem and that way also attract many more developers too.

Microsoft releasing Zenimax games on PS5 would make it much harder to put game pass on PS5 if there was ever a chance. Locking Starfield and TES 6 behind game pass is Xbox’s best shot at getting game pass on PlayStation. They are huge games that appeal to casual and core gamers alike. If they do go on PS5 Xbox loses the biggest assets they had to try to work out a deal since BGS games are the only XGS games that are too big to be ignored.

Game Pass will be the death of Playstation Now and Playstation store if Sony allows it.

Good point.

And maybe Sony might start to ease down with those timed exclusive deals too. Not sure if it works like this but MS could have some leverage now. You want to have Starfield on PS5? Ease up with those deals. It probably doesn’t work like that at all, but still.

Also, I look at what Satya said about the buying of more studios and I just can’t see him being OK with “giving away” their arguably biggest games to the competition. Of course MS would get a hefty cut of PS5 copies sold, but wouldn’t a huge increase of GP subscribers in the end be more profitable for them?

Yup. Imo the end goal should be getting more people in your ecosystem and keep them there so they not only consume your own product but also start buying third party stuff from your store.

putting those games on ps5 you get more money now but not in the long run…

I’ve never really considered PS and Xbox the same, so this line of thinking sounds pretty weak to me. MS is known more for their excellent hardware and services, while Sony is lacking in both of those areas. Sony is known for their AAA exclusives. I really don’t see too much overlap there, as they each have their strengths. If gamers want to leave the Xbox ecosystem because they cannot lord up exclusivity, I’m pretty sure that MS will find a replacement

MS and Sony are not playing the same game anymore, and there is room for both to co-exist. MS is way more concerned about Amazon and Google than Sony these days …

I know it won’t happen. I just wanted to point out BGS games are what it would hurt Sony to miss and the only reason Sony might give game pass on PS5 some thought if any.

If I remember correctly most people who subscribe to services don’t unsubscribe after a month so yes, it would add up as most people would keep the game pass subscription for a while after Starfield/wolfenstein 3/Deathloop etc release on game pass.
