Updating old franchises can be risky. Capcom failed with 1942 and Commando during the ps3 days as well.
I dont think is necessary, beat em ups doesnt work that well on 3D most of the time and there is no reason to update them at all, sure you can turn them into a hack n slash but that doesnt mean it will be a success, also that itagaki last game wasnt that great, just let dotemu and their partners continue working on sega games, they brought back wonder boy and streets of rage without changing their formula or genre
Making a brand new ip is also risky aswell, especially when those have big budgets, again you dont need to update old franchises at all, just evolve their formula to modern standards
Each to their own. Third person didn’t work great until Gears and now is a staple. FPS on consoles wasn’t great until Halo. To me Ninja Gaiden changed things a lot. Beat em ups might not play as good as they play in 2D but in my opinion I think it’s a problem worth solving. Look at the Ori developers using the same art and moving it into 3D and it still looks gorgeous. Itagaki’s last game was indeed pretty bad but given the problems the game went through it was expected and it was also an FPS game. I’m not expecting him to make a hack and slash but a real beat em up , 3d fighting game or something of the kind that walks well in 3D. Seeing as he mostly worked on 3d fighting games which are similar to beat em ups just on a larger scale, I would like to see something of the sort. Anyway this is just me. 2D games are fine just would like to see something new explored.
To be honest, Yakuza is modern Streets of Rage to me. Just with a better story and more cinematic.
Well I guess I will leave it here, my point is that beat em ups arent that easy to translate to 3d spaces, if that was the case then we would see capcom making more final fight games, the difference with shooters is that halo, gears and goldeneye helped bringing standards to those type of games, while ninja gaiden was one of the few cases of a beat em up working well on 3d, you can also count die hard for sega saturn aswell but my point is that there isnt that much examples, golden axe beast rider and splatterhouse didnt had the same luck, and with itagaki it would be a hit or miss, why dont let a new dev team take that opportunity? I dont hate itagaki but it has been a long time since he worked in ninja gaiden and his other titles arent great, and yes he needed more time with his last game but I dont think that would’ve helped that much
I agree, but I dont think they need to turn streets of rage into yakuza, just keep making 2.5D games, afterall xbox doesnt have problems with that genre, just see battletoads, ori and towerborne
Yakuza is cool but far from what I would call modern streets of rage. The feel and hits are just not there. I think the closest would be Sifu though I have never played it. I think a few more runs and it could be perfected.
It’s not like the fighting in those side scrolling beat em ups was ever technical. It is a pretty close fit for Yakuza brawler style IMO. You literally walk down the street, run into a group of enemies, beat them up with simplistic combat and pick up items to throw or beat them with.
For 2024, if Xbox would aquire one developer, who would you select?
I would select IO Interactive to go under Bethesda.
I probably go IO as well, but I wouldn’t oppose Crystal Dynamics if they could also get the TR ip
I do not expect IO soon. They have 3 projects in cooking, many reasons to increase their market value. They would be stupid to sell now, unless they enter a financing crisis.
As for CD, Embracer is probably tied to MS in the Perfect Dark project, and MS can afford to wait to see if they can work nicely with CD.
I think MS will only buy a studio if there is an opportunity or it moves the needle, which is not the case for both studios. Same for Asobo.
For me, i think they will try to acquire a studio either in Japan or Australia. If that’s the case i would have to go with the likes of White Owl Inc for Japan and A44 Studios for Australia.
It is hard to imagine what future studios MS want to acquire.
The first studios that filled XGS were low-key finance-starving studios. Then, MS went big with Bethesda and ABK looking for money makers and big IPs.
Probably a developer in Asia. If the lies of P developers were not under Neowiz they would probably be the pick. Another would be Blueside and maybe Crytek other than that Sega would be my pick but they’re a publisher not a developer. I do however think they would focus on Asia; I think that’s one of their big pushes now especially after hiring the executive from Sony “Mena Sato Kato”.
I will give a bad opinion, but I think that consolidation of the infrastructure of a gaming organisation that is now almost 25k people is their priority. They have grown 10 times in a couple years.
I don’t see MS buying some random small Japanese studio like that, for studios like that it makes more sense for a GP deal
Adobe is the very definition of monopoly in the creative fields. They have zero competition and have steadidly increased prices.
I could go on a massive rant about them, but i doubt most care here
(The fact tgey were allowed to buy substance boils my blood)
i think A44 is already under kepler interactive
CD Projekt Red.
Happy New Year to everyone.
God I hope we get some acquisition this month I want Asobo, CD, EM, and PCF.
